I have a grown child and I kept everything whilst she was growing up (except clothing unless it was really special to me). I've been very slowly decluttering my house because it built up to bursting point over the years. I found it very helpful when my daughter got involved in what was kept and discarded relating to her. She sat down and went through everything. Old school work, books, games, toys etc. She discarded about 95% of the old schoolwork and books and so far about 50% of the toys/games. We are still going through the toys as she has big collections of some toys that she wishes to sell rather than discard. However anything that isn't special to her or resellable she has let go. I kept a tiny amount of things of hers that were special to me and they can be stored in a single tub. Kids can be ruthless where we are clouded with sentimentality with anything related to them. Get them involved too it makes it a lot easier to part with things!

This is what my parents did when they declutted their basement. All my brother's and my toys and things from childhood belong to us, so of course it is our responsibility to decide what to keep or throw out. And what we keep we must find space for at our own homes. They can and will not make that decision for it does not belong to them. Only their stuff belong in their home and my stuff is mine. They have been throwing a lot of their own stuff out because they are getting old and don't need or use it any longer, plus they don't want us grown kids to trouble ourselves with an old house full of crap.❤

I’m 27. My mom finally moved from our childhood home. I went over and in one day I got rid of almost everything, too. I got it down to one box in my storage unit. That’s it!

Good afternoon. This video is actually more helpful than you think because I think many of us can relate to this. I’m a clean, neat and organized person but when I decide to organize and clean the attic, basement and garage type areas, it is overwhelming. It’s helpful when you show how you think it through and start sorting. You’re right, when our brains get overwhelmed, a short coffee break helps. Great job!

I love the gynecologist analogy!!! I started laughing so hard because it's true. Not many ppl want to do a certain job but ppl are needed to do the smelly jobs. Just like a mortician, a Dr that performs autopsy's, or an detective that investigates crimes against children. Nobody necessarily wants to do those jobs, but are vital and very important.

Overwhelming, for sure! I like your voice-overs, but can you also explain more about what you're doing? Was she getting rid of things? How much went out of the house vs just into other rooms? How much of it was trash? You cleared a ton of space, but where did all that stuff go?

Spectacular transformation from chaos to a tidy room with desk space for the resident to work on her arts and crafts. I am sure she is immensely grateful for all your hard work! I admire your patience and attention to detail.

me too, They are my favorite videos to get motivated to clean. Especially when you want to look at it and walk out of a room and leave. I try to keep up with main living spaces, but Barbie and Midwest have helped to start into the other places and see it can be done... so inspired. I was wondering if this owner wanted to decrease the amount of stuff in her home and if you were able to help him with this part of the process. That condensed down to quite a small area considering what you started with. Very good idea to put like things together: all Xmas related items together, electrical, paperwork. I can see what you are doing but people who need help cleaning might like an explanation of how you tidy by category as I think this is what a lot of people don’t get. I’d leave a path clear to open the window however.

I do enjoy your videos. It is amazing how when you start the room is overwhelming & it is okay to stop & think about what needs to be done next. What makes it really nice Barbie, is that you have the home owner there with you to see how you are doing things, but you allow them to be a part of what you are doing & for them to make decisions on their stuff. Barbie, I see how you group things together & this home owner had some amazing stuff, but you couldn't see it until you started to uncover things. And what makes this amazing too, is that it is actually the same stuff, but it is how you rearrange it to not look so messy (and I am not judging the home owner for any of this). My favorite phrase is "YOU HAVE TO MESS UP TO CLEAN UP".

I love watching you! I realized that most or all of the places you do are apartments and many times people don’t realize how much stuff they themselves have because in a house there are all of the other places like basements and attics that have stuff too. I am decently clean but many times remember how I have things in the basement out of sight and if I didn’t have that space I don’t know where I would put all of that stuff. I hope people realize that every situation is different as well. Thanks for what you do!

your job is great Barbie, personally I detest cluttered rooms, once a year I spend a couple of days to trash all old stuff at home because I cant stand disorder and accumulations

I love your videos. I do understand how these people can get like this, I've not got depression but I have anxiety and im not well since having the 2nd vaccine and covid. On the good days I do many tasks in my home but on bad days I do the basics even though I don't feel like doing anything, some times I can't even be bothered to get out of bed, that part has lasted since having covid, most things seems like a chore, it's awful. Great job with that room xx

It's important to remember that when you clear out a room like this all that stuff has to go somewhere. That may be its rightful place, charity shop, recycle or bin, but it will make at least a temporary mess elsewhere. Our home isn't cluttered like this and we have no problem binning stuff that's now just rubbish, or putting things where they should be; it's getting recycling goods to the facility and good stuff to the charity shop that trips us up. I find it helps to put it in my car so I can drop it off if I end up passing those places.

You are a miracle worker Barbie, I wish you lived in Montreal Quebec, lol. Where did all the stuff go? Did the owner decide to throw out and donate things? I can't even walk into my garage, it was decluttered 3 times but over the years all the junk, bikes you name it goes in there and now I am so overwelmed and don't know where to start. I think I will call 1-800 got junk and just get rid of alot of stuff. I just decluttered and repainted, re-decorated one of my son's rooms, and I have to do my other son's room, but I am wiped out and in paralysis mode again. It's hard to get rid of the toys also. But anyway, I'm starting to clue in that too much stuff can't be organized, it has to leave the house. You gave some good tips regarding bedrooms, to start with the clothes, so true as when I look at my room now, it's the clothes that clutter up each surface and corners, trying to motivate myself to get it down, make donation bags. Your videos are great to watch.
