I think the cash envelope system is great when you are beginning to budget. It helped me set boundaries with my money. To intentionally spend my money. After a few months I switched back to my debit card because I find it easier than to carry cash. But I still list "cash envelopes" as a category in my budget. I save my receipts in an envelope and tally them as I make my purchases throughout the week/month. It keeps me accountable and I don't overspend.

Girl, I need to tell you I started getting your newsletters awhile ago. I told my husband about you and the amazing things you’re doing and, of course, got the grumble and look. He pretty much said “Here’s another thing you’ve seen on KZread... we’ll see if you follow through”. I got discouraged, but I’m truly going for it. Eventually, when he sees its working, he’ll be as pumped as I am. People can make all of the excuses in the world, and with the world we’re living in it’s easy to make them. I’m tired of always living pay check to pay check, SO if I hit a road block, I’ll figure it out... NO MORE EXCUSES!! You’re a true inspiration! Thank You!! 🙏🏼

What an amazing video. Perfectly explained on how to get started. I’ve been doing cash envelopes for about a year now and I will not back to my old ways!

My FAVORITE cash envelope is definitely my Christmas one!! We actually keep it in a separate account all year (so it’s more of a sinking fund) and then take the cash out in Oct/Nov to spend. I’ve been doing it for about 5 years now and it makes for a much more enjoyable Christmas all around!

Got started with cash envelopes about 5 years ago, I had saved $3000 extra per year ( the money saved came from what was left from my envelopes at the end of every 2 weeks) I no longer needed the envelope system after 2 years because, I learned to be more frugal and not overly spend. I almost had a NO🚫 spend year, this year, saved SO much money 💵 💴 💰 Bought 1 pair of jeans this year and underclothes. 1 pair Sandals, my husband bought 1 pair of shoes. 1 -$35 comforter/ bedskirt, a few annual Plants, learned to trade seeds for my flowers. Fertilizer for the yard. That’s about it.

A lot of stores will not accept cash at this present time. Personally I do not feel safe carrying cash. If someone were to snatch my purse there goes my money. I love the idea of the envelope system but I don’t think I would ever use it. I do like your channel and you do give good advice.

This is my first month if actually using cash, specifically cause groceries always get away from me... i am doing good, but did end up going to Costco and use my card... my Costco haul usually is for 2-3 months. So not sure how to budget that.

That works fine. I live in Norway, and I can hardly remember the last time I had cash in my wallet. I have several bank accounts, they work as my digital cash system. Via an app, I transfer the money from one account to my debet card account. I "vipps" my kids money, instant digital money transfer. Absolutely no trouble with it. I have my budget in my filofax system, old school, pen and paper. I like it that way. 😊

Most of our stores here are requesting no cash. A couple aren't accepting it at all. While I agree it's a better idea for someone trying to budget, it doesn't look like I'll be doing it.

I used to do this: write down the "cash" allowance on an envelope for a category. Once you spend some, write it on the envelope and subtract to get what you've got left. Put the receipt in the envelope to keep track. (Also helps with keeping the receipts in case you need to return anything).

@@MuerteYCojones that's a great idea. Thanks! Its still a visual of how much we have left if we add the budget amount then with each purchase subtract it.

Cash envelopes wont work for us since the bank is far away from us. We live on a boat its just not Convenient to run to the bank. Also my husband does not want us using cash because we lost an envelope of money in the past. I really want to do sinking funds so any suggestions on how we can do them without using cash.?
