    We don't do "apprenticeships" in the U.S. and the worst thing you can do IS be an "apprentice" when you're young and eager and ready to learn. You'll learn only what your "master" teaches you about whatever he happens to be working on. There are a lot of good tech schools in the U.S. where you can spend anywhere from a short year to almost two years getting a good, all-around education with lots of focus on the FUNDAMENTALS. And you'll be taught that all you really need to work on ANYTHING is the desire, the fundamentals and the ability to READ A MANUAL and comprehend what you're reading and apply it. If you don't like to read or at least can't tolerate reading and don't do it well enough to understand what you're reading and follow simple instructions, you're screwed. Apprenticeships take young people with potential and turn them into clones of the out-of-touch, out-of-date parts replacers that "train" them. That is obviously not the case HERE because he is sharp as can be. I've got a couple degrees in diesel technology from the best tech school in the U.S. and close to 25 years in the field working on everything from chainsaws to railroad locomotives. And I'm damn good at what I do not because I cleaned up parts and did grunt work for years watching somebody else get paid for my work, but because I had an interest in it and a passion for it and the brains and reading skills and enthusiasm to jump right in, give a shit what I was working on and tackle anything. And my 21 months in tech school DID include a co-op education program. And it was even at an International Trucks dealer. What a joke. The other guys were decent and good guys but they were also real pricks at times and I was young and dumb and gullible and they pulled some shit on me that really made me feel stupid. And looking back I know exactly what the deal was. They weren't me and they weren't 18 and single and no kids and going to the school I was just when the diesel industry was really booming all around that city and everywhere else and they couldn't pick up their tools and GO somewhere else because they'd GOTTEN just the kind of low-buck "education" you're talking about and were stuck working on trucks. Which are really pretty damn simple and monotonous - service jobs, clutches, brakes and wheel seals are 95% of it. Over and over. And the new electronic engines like the Detroit Series 60 and Cat 3176 and Cummins N14 were just coming and out and even thought they had those signs hanging outside, they knew those engines were going to distributors and dealers for repair and maintenance. Guys get into turning wrenches at OEM dealers to work on NEW stuff and MOST mechanics love engine work. They got very little of it. The kicker was that after my co-op quarter was over 2 quarters before graduation, they had the balls to ask if I wanted to come back for MINIMUM WAGE and work NIGHTS. Was I worth top shop? Of course not. Would I have been the only guy in my class going to work for minimum wage or even CLOSE to it? Yep. So, in the meantime a kid in the quarter behind us that was going to stay for all 7 quarters had lined up a co-op job at a Caterpillar dealership in the heavy-equipment shop, which is where one of my good friends and classmates did HIS co-op. I went in, asked to work part-time after school and maybe go full-time, started going to class 8 hours a day and driving 50-60 miles round trip for a couple hours of part-time work every night and 2 days after I graduated I started full-time at 2.5 times minimum wage and I was working on Caterpillars. Not schoolbuses and garbage trucks and clapped out semi tractors. My first project? Short-blocking a Cat 3204 in a 953 track loader. By myself. In a shop full of guys that were doing what they wanted to do and were anxious to help and glad to have some young, energetic guys around.

    When I was reading about the Lemon Lawsuit, I read that an Ambulance Company in Georgia had 21 Ambulances on duty on the same day and 14 had to be towed to repair shops, due to the failing International engines. Now we are talking about people's live at risk, not just a bad product. I believe the Ambulance Company had to file bankruptcy because of the failures of the "Ford Diesel Engines." In my case, my '05 F250 service records were deleted from 2 Ford Dealerships. Ford said that there were no records for my vehicle. I bought it new in '05 and transmission was leaking. Took it to the dealer where i bought it the first time. Then I moved and took it to local dealer, less than 6 months of owning it for the same problem-transmission leak. I was told they finally had to weld parts into place to "stop" the leak. My cousin bought the same year and truck, he was able to do the lemon law and recouped his money. I hardly drove my truck for the first 4-5 years and it took 10 years to hit 100k miles, then I had to replace the head gasket. Now it's the oil cooler, after 10k in repairs and it STILL only has 120k miles on it. I'll never buy a Ford again, ever!

    News flash, there was no Navistar International in 1982, it was still International Harvester. Between 2000 and 2014 Ford and International were in a partnership called "Blue Diamond Truck LLC" that made Ford F-650 and F-750 as well as some medium duty International trucks. Same plant and the same chassis but each had different cabs and motors

  • @warrenself
    @warrenself9 ай бұрын

    It’s worth noting that the 6.0/VT365 runs at a lower RPM, produces less boost, and makes similar horsepower and torque that a 7.3 does. 6.4/Maxxforce 7’s are the same way, totally different turbo and fuel system plus the Ford’s never got the upgraded pistons. Ford calibrations and parameters are outside what Navistar wanted. 7.3, 6.0, and 6.4 all using the same lifters makes more sense too after considering those factors. It’s worth noting that Ford Gold isn’t the same technology as the ELC coolant Navistar specified.

    I have to call out Ford as mostly fault. They wanted an emissions compliant engine fast and International had no time to develop one so they went to an outsider for the help to get the motors over. Of course, Ford shoehorns them in. Hard to work on. At the end of the day though, the EPA can be blamed because diesels don't like emission controls unlike gas engines.

    Sure. If you have a two-post hoist. And it wouldn't be so bad if was JUST the diesels that required that. The gas-burner Super Duty trucks do as well. You can get the LH (driver side) cylinder head off a Triton V8 but no the RH head. And of course Ford had that great spark plug thread problem on THOSE engines. Sure, once it was a known issue you could buy a kit to put in inserts with the heads installed. But you're risking getting shavings in the engine AND back when I did one the kit was like $300 or more. I was doing it as a side project when I was turning wrenches on John Deeres and as a favor to a friend and I couldn't justify buying the kit and I didn't want to risk damaging anything because the truck belonged to some hunters from the east coast and it died on them in Nebraska. My buddy was guiding them on a hunt and got with me and I got with them and we worked it out. I didn't think it would be THAT big of a deal to just pull a head and have inserts put in at the machine shop. And it wasn't a HUGE job but MAN those engines are a clusterfuck to get a head off of. The whole front end has to come off the engine to get the timing chain off to pull the head. I screwed myself and nicked the soft, graphite head gasket maneuvering the head back into place and had an oil leak almost immediately on startup so I got to do it AGAIN for nothing, but I learned one big lesson: DON'T WORK ON FOR SUPER DUTIES!

    As far as head gasket failures, the 6.0L was 325 HP and the VT365 was 230 HP max. Higher horsepower creates higher cylinder pressures which then needs more EGR to reduce NOx.

    As an outsider looking into buying a diesel I think I'll pass. Doing my due diligence I see a lot of maintenance on these vehicles even if you are on point with regular maintenance. Culprit seems to be the emissions demands by the federal government and California as they keep moving the goal post and apply restrictive air pollution controls sometimes retroactively. Thing is for all the chest thumping of electric vehicles and cleaner emissions there WILL be a reckoning in the near future with all these lithium batteries. Once used up and their life sucked dry what happens then on the order of millions of vehicles? With a Diesel/combustion engine one can rebuild them. Not with lithium batteries. My dad said "There's no free lunch".

    @killercan10 I can't say directly, BUT take a hard look at the engine in a Mack cabover and you will notice that the engine architecture is amazingly the same. Bed plate, filters injectors all come from the same line of thought. Just like 7.3 injectors look just like CAT injectors. It seemed like a good idea at the time, because European designers had already been dealing with emissions and VGT turbo technology for some time. Welcome to the global economy.

    the 6.0 is a great engine, and it has its flaws, but after its been egr deleted and has head gaskets and studs done they were almost bullet proof but in reliability the 6.7 prevails, then the 6.0 as a close second, then the 7.3 and bringing up the rear is the 6.4. they are all mostly reliable if they are well taken care of, and how long they last depends on how they are driven, and if they are egr deleted+tuned

    That's one story. Wanna hear mine as a Ford sales rep, and finance and insurance guy? I worked for ford, I was at all the High end dealer meetings. With high end Ford representatives. This story was told at the bar to my ceo, by one of ford's highest up officials. Lee Iacocca was a very hated man by Ford. When Lee left Ford and took over dodge, Ford started a campaign to destroy him.. very bad blood between Lee and the new guys running Ford. Lee had designed the dodge pickup to come out in 2000? Lee wanted a high performance v-8 diesel to go in his new design. We kept hearing rumors of a new cat v-8 going into the dodge ram. And it was true, Lee and cat had been working on a V-8 cat and it was ready to go into the dodge ram. Ford knew Lee was aiming at their market share and in a multi million dollar buyout, Ford bought 72% of cat stock and stopped cat from selling the engine to Lee. This pissed international off, as they had also redesigned the 7.3 as a generation 2 engine to go in ford's trucks. Ford then demanded international build and produce the stolen cat diesel for Ford trucks. That's the 6.0.. but the story isn't over. This decision by Ford would end the international engines in the Ford trucks. International sabatoged the 6.0 by putting small oil and egr coolers on these engines, costing Ford 1.1 billion in warranty repairs. And international never designed or built another engine for Ford. Yes the 6.0 was out sourced to overseas companies, as the friction between Lee, Ford and international was at a boiling point. I've heard this story now from 3 very different upper end managers in ford. I've driven a dodge since 2003...I support Lee iacocca... Many will scoff, but ask yourself one question. Why does the 6.0 use cats patented fuel injection system?

    Interesting take to say the least. 7.3/T444E never changed much in or out of a Ford chassis. Navistar used the 6.0 for a long time and had little trouble on their end ironically outside of EGR and oil coolers. 6.4 is the same way. Ford using the wrong coolant type and turning the performance levels up on 6.0’s and 6.4’s along with unique parts had more to do with it in my opinion. HEUI injection was made in the 90’s and debuted with the 7.3. You look at a school bus T444E, VT365, and Maxxforce 7 and they all produce similar numbers. Ford chassis they’re not as close. 6.4’s having the early pistons, compound turbos, K16 injection pump, and different injectors vs the Navistar stuff too. A long rabbit hole to go down but it gives another perspective.

    @gpfordstang302 The 6.7 is a beautiful design. HUGE power and better fuel economy. BUT until we start to see some miles on them we wont know their failure points. At least the parts will be cheaper because the Navistar guys wont have their hands in the deal. I would definitely have EDAS installed on the 6.7.

    I have kind of an odd question....so I'm looking at putting a banks six gun tuner in my 2006 f350 and my question is would I be able to stack an SCT programmer with the banks tuner? My thought process is the banks works off of what the computer programming is at least that is what it appears to me. So by using the SCT to change the computer, wouldn't the banks just modify the horsepower and torque based off of what the SCT level would be? or am I completely bass akward on this

    So once again let the government fuck up something good

  • @chadmeyer9500

    @chadmeyer9500

    7 жыл бұрын

    The government didn't fuck anything up. The emissions thing has been a PITA in a lot of ways but it also forced OEMs to modernize and develop some new technology and ultimately the DIESEL industry does all most ALL of the innovating and advancing of technology. Supposedly "new" technology on cars has been used in the diesel industry on either the engines, vehicles or powertrains or electronic systems for YEARS before it gets to cars. And even with all the struggles, the DIESEL ENGINES OEMS have stuck to it and figured it out. Especially those that build VEHICLES and MACHINES instead of just engines. Nobody else has had NEAR the problems dealing with emissions Ford has and when you start from "scratch (even the 6.4 was STILL a Navistar design already in the pipeline because of the 6.0 debacle) and try to build diesel engines AND V-8 diesel engines AND make them do what all the other companies have spent decades in a continual process of R&D and production of new engines, you're going to crash and burn. And even though Bill correctly blames a LOT of the problems on operator or mechanic error and tuners, the engines still can't mechanically deal with it without grenading. There is no safety margin in a PowerStroke. I'm not saying they should be built any heavier or better than they have to be to RELIABLY handle STOCK power long-term, but then again the diesel peformance fad was already underway when Ford started their diesel program. There's a reason Cummins went to the 6.7 and GM/Isuzu have continually upgraded and improved the Duramax. Some guys are HELL on pickups even at stock power levels and they tend to be guys that NEED their trucks and don't have the time and/or money for dealer service and maintenance whenever its time for it AND in Ford's case given Ford's history of customer service and not getting broken trucks under warranty fixed for MONTHS, they don't TRUST Ford dealers. And if they figure it's a time bomb anyway, why not run the hell out of it, do the bare minimum of maintenance and trade it in as soon as its out of warranty. Ford's problems have NOTHING to do with the "government". Ford's problem is that Ford Motor Company has always been controlled by the Ford family and they all have their own private fortunes and extended families and they're damn near American "royalty" in the elitist circles and a HELL of a lot of their buddies in those circles are stock-holders. So they take care of the bottom line FIRST. And their monopoly in various areas of the world where because all the vehicles are Ford or "foreign" cars made by companies Ford owns a big share of allows them to take a "Fuck You!" approach to building shit right the first time. And the reason the 7.3s were decent engines is because of the fuel system and that is mainly CATERPILLAR'S invention. Ford/International/Navistar fanboys will claim it was a "joint effort" but Caterpillar had been building 99.5% of its own fuel injection systems forever and was perfectly capable of designing and building the HEUI system all by itself. In fact, that system was pretty much obsolete as it came out and Caterpillar didn't do a hell of a lot with it. They played with it on the 1.1 and 1.2 (liters per cylinder) engines some and it did go into production in a few engines, but it ended up being way too much of a power sucker for low-rpm inline 6-cylinder engines in that size range. The 3116s and 3126s with what amounted to a Detroit two-cycle injection systems were a PITA to work on and adjust and synch injectors on and we fought injector cup issues for a while and THOSE were a PITA to replace, but it was a much more efficient and practical system than the HEUI.

    Or you can drop a Cummins in for a lot less money. There is nothing "badass" about a parent-bore light-duty diesel V-8 and never has been. When you build one you're in Caterpillar 3208 and Cummins 555 and Detroit Fuel-Pincher territory. And none of those are BAD engines, but they're pretty much THROWAWAY engines because the expense and time to pull them out, disassemble them, do the heads, bore the block and reassemble them for their LAST of two "lives" is far higher than replacing them if you consider everything. They're built cheap to be cheap and to be recycled. Not rebuilt and reused.

  • @JoshDub78

    Nope. The 6.0 has very specific issues that can be taken care of right away and if done, it becomes a very good engine. It has gotten a lot of bad press for very specific issues such as head studs breaking (Ford thought it would be a good idea to put "flex" head studs which is basically a bolt designed to have some flex in it) and it was a disaster. So we all to change to the ARP studs. Problem solved. Then deleting the EGR had to be deleted. A few more relatively minor upgrades and changes later and you have one heck of a nice engine. Seriously, go ask anyone who knows, and they love the 6.0 after it has been "bulletproofed". Don'tl know much about Duramx other than they have issues too. So they aren't "better". Cummins is a good engine but Dodge trucks overall are crazy bad. Weak frames, issues with drive train and 4WD. No way I'd buy a dodge. They put a good motor in a very very cheap truck. The interior in the most loaded dodge is nothing compared to chevy and ford. Chevy's are built for comfort and luxury and a smooth ride (and they do ride nice), Fords are built to work...period. Rough riding, but still the interior is way nicer than dodge. And they are a tough truck. The engine just needs some updates and then a regimented maintenance schedule. Little things like letting it warm up before just starting and driving off (all diesels should be warmed up and left running idle). Diesels should be left running if possible rather than turning off and on again when your out and about. It's just better for the engine to sit and idle than to shut it off and start it up several times if you're running into the store for a few minutes. I know that presents a theft issue and what-not, but, it's better for the engine. Having the right oil filter and cap, keeping a clean air filter, fuel filters, strong batteries, etc. are all crucial to a strong running Ford diesel. But if you keep up with all that stuff, that power stroke is a dang good engine.

    Josh Dub, I posted. Read my post. My wife is super paranoid about my truck now because of the money we have had to put into it. I recently got a bed plate leak fixed, and when I found out they had to pull the engine I had it bullet-proofed at the same time. We never have anything left over to do upgrades on our house because my truck has broken down several times and sucks us financially dry.
