    I would hope it was towed by 105 up from Canton, and only started to get up onto MetCam. I cannot remember, now, if there was any collateral damage. Don't remember what she had done to her, wasn't involved.

    Ouch! Surely running it with a camshaft gone would cause more damage to the engine?

    My dad did the same to 37428 David Lloyd George,,,, the 37 wasnt impressed, after 3 attempted restarts. It was declared a failure. So he went to the nearest Kettle and made a brew, whilst waiting for assistance. Often wondered what it looked and sounded like . Thanks for sharing your vids. 👍😎

    +Elliot Waterson Yep. Un-burnt fuel being dumped in to a hot exhaust, once it got enough air it flashes off. More common than you'd think.

    Tad more than a "broken camshaft" that's pistons, liners, rings, shells, possible bent valves. The engines scrap now it's come light engine. A) why wasn't it towed there? B) why is it pulling another loco, it must be getting something off the other loco.

    It had to have a few new piston rings and the the affected cam locks replaced, no big deal. It's shunting around the workshops in this clip.

    thay will it would be much cheaper to put new pistons , valves (thay will hit each over if the camshaft is broken) and a new camshaft than by a new loco

    If the camshaft was broken, it wouldn't run. Cam shafts operate the valves and don't make noise.

  • @peebee143

    The engines in those have a three-piece camshaft, one camshaft for each of the two banks. The locking components between two of the three sections on one bank had failed, allowing the third section to rotate, but out of correct timing. All cylinders firing, but the cylinders relying on the failed cam section were out of correct timing, hence the smoke and 'knocking'.

    why is there a clown driving a faulty loco.It should be towed in for repair,would you drive your car in this state.I would suspect the cause of this is dirty oil which has not been changed when it should have been, Now its going to cost a lot to put right

    I always try to give the benefit of the doubt but, yeah, it's really hard to see why you'd drive a locomotive making such awful noises, with clouds of unburnt diesel coming out of the exhaust, blowing forwards right where the driver can see it.

    The engine itself is usually reliable, but some of the locos as a whole were very badly built, which soured the class's reputation from the start. I'm actually fairly impressed the thing can still run (badly, but still well enough to move) with a broken camshaft; that would kill the average diesel car engine instantly.

    See, just the more reason to pursue electrification! (uh... I am expert on railway electrification, I never heard of PANTOGRAPHS catching fire)!

  • @BenjaminEsposti

    @BenjaminEsposti

    Pantographs can and do catch fire sometimes. It's not the actual pantograph, but the electrical wiring. Also, if a bird or animal gets on it, they can be electrocuted and then cause a fire. What about when there is a derailment? How do you know that the electricity will be turned off right away? Passengers might be electrocuted while trying to escape the wreckage. So yeah, there are pros and cons to everything.
