54 GMC 630 "Jimmy" Detroit Diesel 4-71

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Before you Drivers fill that coffee thermos & head out on the road take a few minutes and drewl over Wayne Rice's 1954 GMC 630 with a killer Detroit 4-71 "Fuel to noise" powerplant. I think you're gonna love this fine example of Old School Trucking equipment......GM style.
The "Luck of da Irish" was with me this year as I caught this Bad boy on St. Paddy's Day.

What a beauty, who wouldn't be proud to own a truck like that. There was a lot of freight that got moved by those little 4-71s , now they just seem so tiny. That cow clip cracked me up by the way :-)

Pretty girl! I used to work for a dirt moving company that restored "the Old Man's" first lowboy tractor. It was this same vintage body with a swapped 6-71, giant Mack rear tandem and a twin box trans, with massive winch of course for the old style lowboy. She was a good looking old tractor. Those old trucks really were 'tractors' , basically no comforts other than glass and heat

In 1956 when I was 11 years old I rode up to Erie with my older brother to pick up a 470 gmc tractor with a 371 in it from reslick and wingers(gm dealer). He trade in a 1949 gas job gmc. The salesman there gave me one of those 860 cannonball friction models and I've been hooked forever.

Dane, what a great video! Absolutely love the truck. Anything Detroit gets my juices flowing. My dad was a big Detroit guy('Binders were his favorite with GMC his second fav)he ran his own repair and leasing business for 50 years and was pretty much the Detroit whisperer in this area. The last one he rebuilt was a 12V71 in 2009 when he was 75 ...he always ran them in a test stand to break em in before putting em in.....he loved doing that 12V so much. Sometimes I just think of all the knowledge that went with him when he passed, and all of the other old timers too. Brought back some good memories of when life was simpler. Thank you Dane!

🇺🇸 Steve, enjoyed your comments.🥰 I grew up around many old trucks of the 50-70s and grew to love them. I’ve never been much of a Detroit lover, but there have been several Detroit powered rigs that I really enjoyed! My brother bought a 72 IH single axle and we pulled a flatbed of the styrofoam to Cincinnati weekly. It wasn’t loaded with power, but that 238 would get down the road & do the job very well. We put over 1 million miles on that old engine before having it rebuilt! Loved that truck!🥰 I enjoyed all the trips I made with my brother. He taught me quite a bit. I now have a IH 9670 with a Series 60 Detroit & love it. Keep On Truckin! 🥰😎✌️

Back in the early 60's a GMC 600 series, single-axle dump truck with a DD would pass thru our end of town once or twice a week. I'd run down the alley to try and catch a glimpse of it as the driver would pull out onto the main thoroughfare and go through the gears. I sure loved the sound of that "screamin' jimmy".

What a beauty! Oh they may be LOUD, but what a glorious noise! Complete opposite end of the internal combustion sound spectrum from a high rpm Formula One V12 at full wail, but glorious nonetheless. I remember a car carrier at work I used to drive. This was in the late 90’s early 00’s, it was a 1985 GMC 8500 6 wheel with a hydraulic sliding/tilting 20’ bed. It was a very nice but abused by every driver but me. But it was a loaded High Sierra trim, with power windows and locks, AM/FM stereo, AC, great air seat, padded door panels and roof, with tinted windows. Peered by a very similar 4/71 Detroit, but with an added 120 mm turbo up on top of everything else. Sent back to a straight 5 speed low hole first, with 2speed posi 5:88/4:10 rear. Man did that old noise maker create some amazing sounds! Run up through the gears with the 2speed rear was like bambambam. We used it to haul lumber and building supplies, when we weren’t delivering or picking up empty and even loaded Sea Containers, from 20-28’ long. The radio was a nice Pioneer with 4 great speakers, but even with the windows up it was almost impossible to hear!

I had a neighbor in the 70s like that truck. His also had a 471 with a 5 speed and a 2 speed rear end. He added a drag axle and pulled a tandem axle grain trailer. He used it to haul grain from the field to the grainy. It was painted John Deere yellow and his wife drove it. When he upgraded to a newer truck he sold it to a neighbor. It stayed in the area for a while. Don’t know what happened to it. Thanks for rebuilding it and making the video.

That Jimmy brings back a lot of memories. Dad bought the same tractor in the early 60's. I believe it was a former St. Johnsbury truck. It replaced a F-8 with a Lincoln flat head V-8. That was big power back in the day. I spent many hours in the passenger seat as a kid. Every hill was spent in second low or high with that 4-71 screaming. He used it locally with a lowbed to haul dozers and a backhoe.

Reminds me of my early years... I did love the sound of that exhaust but for power wise... I wouldn't wish it on a enemy,. I did like power and those detroits were nothing compared to todays detroit. I started on a "Bull nose" 57 KW, and it had a 250 cummins with the "stinger" on the fuel pump. 5 speed, three speed brownie transmission, a two speed rear... in and about 64. I just had the best truck pulling a flat bed trailer... heres the best part... vacuum brake an water to cool it down like it was fast enough tp warm the drums. Bad thing to take forgranted as I did come off of a hill that claimed a few trucks... My cab on this truck was a graft from a older rig, I believe it was a sterling

Love these guys and their old school rides. This guy did a good job with his Dad's ride and he is a great guy for adding his wife and the little details he put into his ride. God bless you all and I hope you have a great evening and enjoy your weekend. Would love to be caught up but I have to get work done then come home and finish chores to get to watch you all and get caught up. Sometimes like this evening I put it in auto play and watch what it throws my way because I can watch some of them twice, because they are so good. Thanks for sharing this with me and my family/friends. TTYL and we are looking forward to seeing all of your videos and work.
