#53 Woodturning, Burning, Colouring and Copper Binding 'Bound #2'

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

So this week woodturning project video, seeing as Bound #1 created a split of likes and not-likes, I go to town with making a perfectly good blank of sycamore look like it's hundreds of years old and bind a burnt/scorched false split with copper wire.

Hi Martin I still cannot decide if if I like the arty effect or not. You deserve 10 out 10 for what you have achieved and the wire gives it a rustic look. I admire your bravery with the projects just keep them coming. All the best Eric

Martin. Great piece. Bound 2 gets my vote. I much prefer the shape of the V cut and the scorching is spot on. Actually, the thing that really lifts the piece for me is the turning of the subtle inner dish shape. Very nice touch. Cheers. Dave

Thank you Martin. I like this second one. Your artistic flair once again shines through. When in my nearest large city I often visit a craft shop and buy bits and pieces. A few months ago I purchased some copper wire. I wasn't sure why but now it all becomes clear. I think it's about half the gauge of the electric wire and therefore much more pliable. Anyway, I like this project a lot. Best wishes, Alan.

Wow! I was very impressed with Bound #1, and this one is over the top! Absolutely beautiful work, Martin. The copper wire is growing on me and somehow I think the leather would look better with this piece, but I still absolutely love it. All the Best, Dane

This piece is stunning! As an artist who works a lot with copper to make jewellery and wire trees, I think a smaller gauge of copper wire would perhaps look better and if you had oxidised the wire with liver of sulphur first then buffed it, it would have added to the antique look. But I'm not a wood turner (yet) so this is an amazing piece.

Hi Jay - a smaller gauge wire would have been a lot better, I agree - it would make it look a lot more 'laced' rather than how it is. A lot of wire I've got at the moment is the type that doesn't oxidise....must get some more" All the best, Martin

I would like to see a bound #3, where you actually sew the "missing piece" back into the bowl. Or even replacing the missing piece with a different material, as if it were repaired, and for the record, I prefer bound #2 over #1. Keep the inspiration coming, thanks.

Even though I saw the finished product first, I still flinched when I saw the thin side of the split flexing during the finishing. Very nice job, very much like I envisioned it. To my eye the wire is a bit too heavy. Perhaps a higher gauge wire next time...or even some hemp twine. (That was commonly used a hundred years ago.) One tip I've learned over time is to use "Duck Bill" pliers to take the kinks out of wire for a smoother look. Just a gentle squeeze between the jaws will do it. Line the jaws with masking tape first to prevent marring the wire. The artistic portion of the project looks perfect. Well done.

Without a doubt Martin Bound #2 has my vote over the pair of them. It has a much better randomness about it if you know what I mean. Hi Martin, I think I preferred number 2, in my humble opinion I think the more natural the split the better it looks, and I'm not sure about that copper, It might have been better with a leather lace,? or drop the copper into a jar of vinegar for a couple of days to take the shine from it, (maybe) I like the way you aged Number 2 and the colours are great, Great work mate, thank you for sharing best wishes. Hi Martin, Glad to see that you're feeling much better mate. And you are in you natural habitat doing what you love most! .... well almost most lol. Please don't take my comments personally. The burnt rim I really really like... thats a first for me! But personally I would have give the plate hell, throw stones, big chains, nuts and bolts, pebbles... anything to take the new look away! I would have then stained it.... not with wood stain. Coffee, tea, vinegar and wire wool, just splashed again to take the clean new look away... then a slight drop of bleach just dripped randomly from hight so it splashes. Soak crusty old rags in coffee etc and throw them at it... have fun lol. My kids loved me to help them with their art homework lol. Get an old plate and drop it, and take photos of how its broken and chipped then do the same on the wooden plate with the Dremel etc. But you got me thinking now lol, it looks great fun. have you tried the same concept but with a wooden vase, jug, mug or even a pencil pot? But this is how I would do it, I'm not a woodturner so I don't know how they would do it!!! I'm really enjoying the video's. Take care mate. Cheers Andy

Personally I hope the copper tarnishes so it will match the old look. Very clever and a VERY nice piece.

I feel a little Simon Cowel coming on !! " I don't like it" "I abssssss olutely llllove it" Really love the anger in this one Martin, as I said on FB it gives the feel of a demon trying to bite its way out of the heart of the bowl !!! Love the scorching and the copper..... one thing I would suggest as more of an idea is putting the wire in before you scorch it? that way the copper will change colour and soften a little, I just think the copper is a little "shiny" compared to the industrial earthiness of the bowl ?, Just my opinion.... Love both pieces though, nice concept !! Cheers mate ....Steve.

I like this much better, it doesn't look planned. #1 looked planned. I like the randomness of #2. I don't know if you are going to do any more binding, I think if you made the wire look like barbed wire that would be a nice effect. Good job.

Hi Martin, Bound #2 is my favourite. You looked like you really got into burning it there for a bit :) I think I would have used a more pliable copper wire though, something like craft wire instead of electrical wire. As always the colour and finish looked superb, a really warm (sorry) piece. You may already be aware but just in case; Andy at the Mulberry Tree studio on the IOW does some really nice bound pieces.

Given a choice, I prefer bound #2 as it is much more random. Had you thought about trying a much narrower cut in the bowl (say 1-2 mm wide) with copper wire in a mock staple effect? I think that could look very nice. I enjoy your videos Martin. Best wishes Mike B

Bound two is incredible.... the only change I would make would be to simplify the copper crisscrossing. Just cross it on the front side, on the back it could go back up on the same side it came down on... so the copper only crosses the gap on the front and the back shows a line of 'stitches' going up each side of the crack. With just a simple crisscross, only in front, it would be much clearer what is going on with the 'thread'. Or, you could just do a basic spiral 'stitch'. A 'knot' in the back at the bottom, up, across to the first hole there, down and across to the second hole on the first side, up and across to the second hole on the second side. Like the first section of wire you did here, but no skipping holes, and the 'thread' ends in a 'knot' on the rim. But this is really quite beautiful... the burning and the subtle coloring is perfect!

I've been watching your videos for a while now and finally subscribed. Bound #2 is much more natural looking than Bound #1. It looks as though it was resurrected from an ash pile and cleaned up a bit. If that's what you were going for, you nailed it! Some rusty fence bailing wire may look good too instead of the cooper, but either way, this one is a winner. Have you ever tried working with any epoxy resins? The segmented goblet would have been a good candidate for some resin work. Keep up the great work and positive messages Martin.

I too would like to see the verdigris version of the copper wire and compare it to the 'shiny' copper wire version... I think I will like the verdigris version better. How did you 'seal' the burnt portion of the turning to prevent it from contaminating the un-burned portion of the turning? Great turning and wonderful embellishment which makes the turning awesome!!! Hi Martin. Bound#2. A much better effort this time. However I would say that the created split is a tad too wide and too long giving the knock-on effect of making the copper lacing too heavy. Had you narrowed the split and shortened the actual cut a bit and then continued on with a grove line like a wavy crack for a bit it would lighten the lacing by starting with small tight ones. The texture and burning certainly made an improvement. But man!!!! thats one big fierce torch. I felt the heat from it way up here in Scotland. Treat your self to a smaller and infinitely more controllable unit. Machine Mart, market an absolute beauty that will give years of service. It's the Clarke CBT1 at £22.59 ex vat. You will not regret it. Thanks again. Bound #3 ?

Martin I prefer "Bound 2" over "Bound 1" for a couple of reasons, first as others have said the edge needed to be burnt the other reason is on burnt 1 the cut out looks like slice of pizza where on "Burnt 2" it looks like a real fault. But keep on producing works of art where people can debate it.

#2 is by far better than #1. Rather than using the band saw perhaps a jigsaw with a small blade may help to cut more of a jaggered edge. However you rectified that with the dremmel. Love the burnt edges and the ageing colour as it does work much better than #1. Not sure about the copper wire though, it looks too new and shiny. Also picking up on #1 I didn't mention, the threading of the laces should be how we do our shoes, not criss cross but a constant lapping moving up a row at a time (H&S). The copper may work better then as you have the shiny new with a neat binding as the copper does look a mess. The binding is a great novel idea that is far from the norm and works on #2 99%. Sorry just being very picky.

I like them both for different reasons. I have the brain of a cowgirl. So I see with bound#1 having cowboy brands or different types of spurs as an accent and #2 having barb-wire accent.

Hi Martin this one does look better than the other one i think it would look a lot better if you got rid of that copper wire and used leather instead did you see Al Furtads video of a laced up piece the crack was much thinner and a lot more eye catching than yours yours look man made where Al's looks natural cheers Ian

Hi,bound number two much better, the first one looks too wide, but the second one looks natural even though you had to "make it".

i would prefer #2....seems less "planned" as if it were a repair for something that nearly went catastrophically wrong...

I think Bound #2 with Bound #1's leather lace would be better. The copper's too shiny for the piece.
