5 Tips on How To Sound More Professional in English

I've got 5 tips to help you sound more professional at work. You'll learn simple, but important speaking tips for Business English to help you communicate clearly and confidently in your job.

What are the words and sounds that SO many people use, but it can immediately make you sound unprofessional and uncertain? You’ll have to watch the video to find out 😉
🌎 I’ve worked at companies in other countries and I had to learn how to adapt to their culture in their workplace. I had to make slight adjustments to the way I addressed people, the way I spoke to them, and the way I accepted or declined invitations. Navigating new cultural landscapes is half the fun of living abroad!
Of course, you know how to sound professional in your native language, but there are likely some different rules and customs in English.
So I hope this video offers you more than just English speaking tips, but just how to sound more professional at work. How to feel confident, comfortable, and relaxed at work. This video will help you get your message across effectively and politely!
✍️ Let me in the comments, do you have any other tips to sound professional and polite?
Have you already noticed some differences in the way that business is done between English and your native language? What are they?

I was hyped for this lesson because it will help me build the attention to detail when I speak English. I got my head around the idea that avoiding filler words and unhelpful phrases is important. I love this idea because I tend to think that to keep talking and speak many phrases, even if they are white noise, sound smarter than making pause. I'll change my mind.

Thanks Emma, for this very good lesson! I work in a multinational company where I have to practise English everyday. When I have to ask someone to do a task for me, I usually ask using the expression "can/could you please do it?". One of the differences I noticed between American and Brazilian culture is the lunch time. In Brazil we have usually a one-hour lunch break, and we respect that break. In the US I saw that people go back to work as soon as they finish eating. Kind regards from south of Brazil! PS: last thing: your intonation looks very happy and enthusiastic to me.

Hi Emma, how's it going? So you explain in this lesson what exactly I have observed: professionals speak clear: professors, lawyers, doctors, etc. They usually speak very clear. This got me confused because if I wanted to sound professional something told me that I had to speak clear and not so fast, but, I hear everywhere: if you want to sound like a native you have to spesk fast and connect the sounds. Now you clarify this confusion for me: professionsls speak clear because they want to be sure that their message has been fully understood. Thanks Emma and keep it up!! I liked it when you said "Let's get professional".😉

@@dnjosh10 I think there isn’t any universal methods. What I essentially did was to pronounce the words as much clearly as possible. And I have to admit, that when it comes to speaking slowly, there is more time to reflect on the sentences’ structure and connotation. It is really really helpful.
