Phrasal Verbs for Everyday Conversation + My Tips to Learn & Use Correctly

Learn 10 interesting phrasal verbs for everyday conversation and learn to speak fluently! I'll talk about also share my tips to learn and use them correctly in everyday conversations.
We use these phrasal verbs on a daily basis: you'll hear them on the news; read them in the
paper; and hear people using them as they talk about their family, community, the pandemic, life and hope or the future.
Knowing how to use a phrasal verb correctly is the hardest part, so I'll also get a little technical as I teach, to help you to understand exactly what you need to know and learn about phrasal verbs.
TRANSITIVE or INTRANSITIVE?
Phrasal Verbs that are transitive need an object. EG: (to) run out of (we need to always say WHAT we have run out of for this phrasal verb to make sense!) "We ran out of milk."
If it's intransitive, it can be used on its own, without an object. EG: (to) run out: "The milk ran out."
SEPARABLE or INSEPARABLE?
Separable means that the verb and the particle are able to be separated in the sentence.
Both of these sentences are correct:
- He fought off the flu. ✅
- He fought the flu off. ✅
But (to) pass away is inseparable. We can only say "Her uncle passed away last year."

During those days, I had developed the habit of getting up late due to a stern lockdown. I ran out of money but we dipped into our savings to bear with it. For a while I was coming down with the anxiety due to financial crisis and it was difficult to fight it off. My family was getting by through one of the toughest times then. Soon I realized not to let go this time in vain so I stepped up and started learning online to enhance my skills. Thank You very much Emma for this awesome lesson.

Dear Emma, I ran out of patience about a lot of people who seem don't care about wearing masks in internal area. My husband and I are trying to get by this terrible long period but we couldn't avoid to dip into my husband's pension since we went without work for more than 1 year. Thank you for helping me to better understand your language! You are the best!

Hi. Thanks so much for such excellent lessons! I was wondering whether you would agréé to explain when and How to use thé following wNo 1: This is the pure essence of liquorice, with the natural sweetness from the liquorice root. Sweet taste balanced with strength and a touch of finesse from pure aniseed. To many, No.1 is not just their number one, it’s their one and only.ords, stressing their nuance of meaning: Quite, fairly, rather and pretty. That may bé relevant for all your audience! Thanks for your Replay. Yours sincerely, Dominique from France.

You Aussie are very warm, gentle and thoughtful. This expression "to rally around" reflects how you are in terms of idiosyncrasy. I know what I'm talking about. Unfortunately, here in Spain, the pandemic time is demonstrating citizen's behaviour is increasingly individualistic and self-centred, with some exceptions. You're streets ahead of us. It was a good session, Emma, thank you. From this set of 10, I would choose for using maybe 5. It doesn't mean that rest of them are useless; not at all! It means that my quite limited general level of English doesn't require quite advanced FV's. As simple as that. Maybe, I will recognize them in context, maybe not. I don't want it to sound instructive: KZreadrs prefer something simple and applicable for everyday routine. Thank you again and...stay healthy.

Dear Emma, Thank you for this lesson! Helps me enormously to be fluent on what I was doing during last year pandemic. I am a laboratory person and may I say that my team and me were on the frontline in the fight with the COVID-19. My staff were affected by the virus. By other words we came down with COVID-19, but we were able to fight it off and continue to testing for SARS-CoV-2. It was not easy, but being railled around by our community we managed to continue our job properly. And as you told while some people were lucky enough to dip into in order to get by, a lot of citizens of my deveolping country went without essentials to survive. Some of them passed away. But we do hope that the vacciine campain, which is being rolling out by our Goverment will help to come back to our 'normal' life. Thnaks one again. Best regards.

Each time you come up with a new phrasal verb lesson this one is always really interesting. In that difficult period, we run out of leisure, activities and go without travel, we can brush up on our English. Many restaurants got by to manage their closure by preparing takeaway food. Families dipped into their savings and governments stepped out companies by giving financial help. IT departments had to roll out new ways to allow employees to work remotely. Despite these new provisions with the virus a lot of elderly people passed away. The fear settles in and each time when we come down with a sneeze, a cold or a fever we think we have the coronavirus We hope that all will end up soon. Thank you very much for the lesson and let me know if you find out any mistakes. kiss

Ohhh thanks for those phrases verbs. When the pandemic started I lost my job, and I was getting by for 2 month.Currently I live in Dominican Republic, I’m Venezuelan , I’ve lived here for 2 years, and the pandemic started in my first year here, but my family were ralling around me overseas all that time. I had been dipped into my savings, and I had gone without a good job. A lot of people passed away here. Then I came down with a cold, I was thinking it was covid but I went to the doctor and took the test and it was negative, few days later I was able to fought it off. It’s right what you was saying dear Emma, despite of the situation we have seen people offer support and step up. (I’ve been learning English with you, I’m able to express this words because you, here I have known a lot of people from the whole planet, germans, Italians, from UK,USA , even Australian people etc, and you know what? I can talk with them and learn about them because you have been teaching me all the time) I love youuu! Thanks again❤️❤️❤️❤️ Cristian here! Bye...

Thank you , right I have rallied around with people that used to be strong, but it’s weird or odd to see that you are stronger in a kind of way , now I need to step up my life and that’s what I’m going to do .
