It hasn’t all been easy, but I’ve done my best to stay positive, continuing to do the work, keeping alcohol out of my mouth. And the meaningless conversations and foolish behavior the night of the party too.. I’m so sick of parties that are just about standing around and drinking.. so stupid! A good party has activities.. music, painting, building, diy, drawing, board games.. but sitting around watching commercials (sports) and watching alcohol propaganda is the old fashion way before internet and now we know it’s a toxic and wasteful way to be! Life is short and the feeling of being drunk should be considered an illness.. it’s nearly the same a vertigo for me!

At 10 months sober , lately have been having cravings, so thanks for your video. I needed a little boost of motivation. Went from 3,years ago drinking and weighing 274 lbs to yesterday running a high altitude 20k , 2 hours 20 minutes elevation of 6000 to 8000 feet here near Yosemite National Park. They even had beer at one of the aid stations 😳😳. But went to a barbecue last night where everyone was drinking laughing eating ect…. But I felt great ,able to get up this morning at 0630 and iam getting ready to go do a 8 mile run . Thanks again for your advice.

Coming up to a year now. I'll be on holiday when my 1st anniversary comes up. The devil on my shoulder keeps telling me I will be okay to have one or two at the end of the day just while I'm away but I know if I allow myself to do it once I will make another excuse to do it again. I'm not going to do it but I wish this voice didn't keep popping up in my head. I just came back from another holiday which I managed AF and it was the most relaxing holiday ever as I wasn't hungover every day.

In case this helps someone, I changed my diet in January this year, towards a more keto/carnivore diet. Have had a lot of health improvements, but the surprise was that my taste for wine has dwindled, and for the last 3 months, the idea of it has become unpalatable and unappealing. I've had a few, on just a handful of social occasions, but not wanted to keep going past 2 or 3, or on subsequent days. . This has happened without 'white-knuckling' it. I have just moved on, through having great nutrition. Whatever the actual mechanism, its a great outcome. I dont need to be 'right' that this is the way. It is a way. Just sharing, in case it helps somebody, or provokes anything positive for someone.

I work in Retail/DSD and it baffles people when I tell them that I don't drink alcohol. I do make conversations about past experiences and "play the part" about weekends and partying from my earlier days. When they ask why I don't drink I simply say "I can't control it, so I don't do it". Kevin's original book "How to Stop Drinking Alcohol" was the game changer for me. I've done some AA meetings, but really Kevin is what started it. I'm glad to see how far he has progressed in his Videos and personality from his journey as well. Keep up the great work and Thank You, Kevin! ON-wards and Up-wards mate!

Very helpful video, Kevin! During the first few weeks after you quit alcohol you'll be faced with cravings, emotions and uncomfortable feelings. They come in waves and you'll think they'll never stop. There'll be times when you'll question your decision and think it would be a better option to start drinking again! The good news is that things will get better and it won't be long after you quit drinking before positive changes emerged. Keep fighting and don't give up!👋💪❤

Health and fitness as I approach 60 are my priorities , I’m so lucky to have both and want to continue to improve with better sleep and feeling at ease with less anxiety and overwhelm . Your walks in nature with your beautiful dogs are so inspiring , I’m also lucky to have a similar scenery around me and 4 beautiful rescue dogs who I adore and love their walks . Number 4. Just like deciding to become something in your life , you decide then you hone in and practicevand study and work and focus and make mistakes and learn and get tested....then you work your way to that goal you decided to shoot for. Nothing is more opposite than being a drinker to being a petson who doesnt get drunk on alcohol. So theres alot ALOT of work. But its rewarding and everlasting . Im still young in the journey and evetyday i see things that challenge me. Things im going to shift as i go. Its a wonderful path . The relief of knowing the booze is gone is a pure pure joy. Like waking up from a nasty dream realizing....it was just a basty dream.

Sadly, now I feel more lost as I don’t seem to have any clue what I want to do with the rest of my life at 62. I have to say that your logic escapes me somewhat - you seem to be saying that one can more easily focus on goal oriented activity and basically getting what you want and that alcohol is damaging to that, but that's a can of worms in itself... Firstly - I grew up in a toxic environment, close to a chemical plant with nuclear waste, in a large city with lots of pollutants (and when I got out to the countryside there are still pollutants such as pesticides, etc.) so I don't perceive myself to be toxin free and living in some clean pure environment. Secondly - there's the idea that I should instead pursue my life goals as if that's some great thing - but blaming alcohol for failed relationships may well be masking the fact that I'm pretty crap at relationships anyway and that I've not met too many other people who aren't locked in to pursuing their goals in this instrumental fashion - the fact that one is perceived as somehow "healthy" and the other is seen as damaging simply doesn't ring true - wars don't start over arguments concerning drinking but rather because people are locked in to instrumentally pursuing their goals - treating other people as means to their ends. Thirdly - I am a 54 year old alcoholic who recently cycled 100km in a day - I had a drink for every 10km I rode. The drinking didn't prevent me from accomplishing my aim - in fact without the extra carbohydrates I would've struggled to eat enough solid food to fuel me for my ride, plus I possibly would've felt the pain even more and enjoyed it less due to being fixated on achieving my aim rather than simply enjoying the journey. Certainly the alcohol did not prevent me from achieving my aim. Fourthly - it sounds like you were using alcohol as a painkiller - but there are far more effective painkillers like morphine and cocaine... if you need a painkiller then choose wisely. If you're getting drunk and having hangovers then you're not really an alcoholic, maybe you just need to learn to pace yourself better (and be a bit less goal focused!)? Fifth - the concept of escape and your other example of watching netflix... I'm seeing a guy walking out in the countryside with his dogs which itself seems like a form of escape. While it might be fair to say some forms of escapism are more healthy than others, at the end of the day; firstly you're still escaping, secondly you're an adult who can make such choices as to whether you choose the more healthy option or not and so at the end of the day if you lose a few years of your life then who really cares - most people I know in their 70's and 80's are taking so many tablets (and tablets to counteract the side effect of those tablets) that their quality of life is appalling and they are full of toxic crap on a pharma-approved rollercoaster of chemicals rather than those bought down the off licence. disclaimer - I already drunk a bottle of wine when I wrote this.

I don’t know if it’s just me, but it seems like the overwhelming majority of the younger generation under 30 nowadays don’t drink alcohol at all. Video games and smartphones are their dopamine rush! It’s older folks that do it! I think alcohol can be a great thing and it can also be a very horrible thing. When I saw that All in the Family episode with the little girl’s father in a cold sweat going through alcohol withdrawal and blackmailing the Bunker’s for money to keep her, that seems like the worst case scenario.

This time I self detox by taking benzo myself and trust me it was not easy even with benzo at my hands but I made it through 6 days now. I crave sugar more than anything. I’m not sure what you mean. I’m going to read this as though you are asking “Can I give up drinking on my own”. The answer is yes of course you can. The attractions of alcohol are plain: first is the euphoria you feel after the first couple; next the ease with which you can talk to people; and the great atmosphere at many pubs and bars. Then think about the downside, hangovers, drunken rows, the toll on your body and on your pocket, the troubled or broken relationships. What you do as a drinker is you accept uncritically the propaganda of the drinks companies, who promise a great deal if only you use the products of alcohol. Then you wise up and realise the promises are empty. What about the friends at the bar? My old Aunt Bess who was a hardened drinker explained to me that the people you meet at the bar are cronies not friends. Another friend Bill, whose father was a serious drinker went to the bar where his dad hung out to tell the drinking buddies that his dad had died. Not one of them showed up to the funeral. The negative aspects of alcohol are appalling once you look behind the propaganda. There is no disease or illness you could have that isn’t made worse by alcohol. Alcohol in itself is a poison that will kill you. We all have our horror stories about it. Its abuse has destroyed lives, torn apart families and caused ruin for many. Yes you can give up alcohol on your own. What I found useful were KZread channels like this one which will keep you focused. Good luck my friend I’ve been sober for over 400 days relying on my own company oh and I’m 73 years old. If an old fool like me can do it anyone can. 😂😂😂😂😂

What about those who like to binge drink then pretend to “take a break” for 2 or 3 days just to binge drink again. Oh in between having wine or beer during the so called “break”. 77 year old man who can’t control his drinking because he’s bored and doesn’t pursue any hobbies in a serious /fun way because he’s essentially waiting for the next time to drink and has no patience and has anxiety.. both probably withdrawal symptoms. Thinks that well i enjoy this so why not.. I hate that mentality!
