Lilly, have you ever considered fox hole type shelters? Could just be a hole in the ground, could have a raised wooden branch bottom with a cold sink, could have wooden sides, could have a slanted roof or not, if have a slanted roof, could have a plastic sheet cover that drains into a ditch for water collection, etc. Lots of options. Just some thoughts.

Been there done that. Wrapped up in a whool blanket with my dog on the bare ground. When I got home the next day, me and my dog was covered in blood sucking parasites. Fun times. Don't let it scare you. You just brush or pull them of your skin. What doesn't kill you makes you stronger.

I think the dome shelter is alot of effort but spacious for several people whose body heat can heat the interior. In my windy local environment I’d worry about branch/leaf filling material blowing away but would have to adjust for that. She’s some good cutting skills for sure!

It is an awesome one off product for protecting your family during a national crisis minus the headache. Really excellent video and definitely a channel I'll be looking into in the future! However there is one thing to add, especially if you're building shelters that are meant for long term use, something I picked up from the TA Outdoors KZread channel; don't just randomly pluck patches of moss but try to remove it by gently rolling it up like swiss rolls. If you do it that way the roots will generally stay intact and cause the moss to regrow once its been laid out on the shelter, making for an even better and sturdier roof.

@@denisefrontino1101 No, it will camouflage the roof and once its roots start growing again it will help to bind any loose material used for the roof together so it won't be blown away by heavy wind that easily. But if you want proper waterproofing you'll either need to apply a layer of clay first and let that dry to a hard layer, or but down a sturdy plastic sheet first before putting loose soil and vegetation over it.

@@lindaduke6751 Quite possibly, but bugs destroyed my life.... (Ticks gave me Lyme disease)... It didn't kill me, obviously, but the life I had ended and a different one started...

This is awesome and shows what you can do with/without a wide range of tools and resources - I recently took a survival course and here in the Pacific NW USA we are able to utilize sword ferns - no knives or tools of any kind were used for our shelter except our hands. (We searched for a ridge pole instead of cutting one)

Nice Job, I built most of these when I was a young boy with my brother on a friends 1500 acre land. I loved to see you make the floor warmer pit. Never thought of that before; brilliant job. We built these with an old custom built hatchet we also carried knife.

I liked the idea of the heated floor! Never would of thought of it. Plus I can use that end for cooking as well

Awesome thanks for sharing. From the time I was 6 yes old I was in the woods building huts, dugouts and campsites out of pine and oak trees. I grew up in north Florida. For four years I lived in S,C. And the first year joined the Boy Scouts. We built campsites for our patrols. This video brings back memories.

Very good to see all women doing these demonstrations. I've slept in the 1st shelter. Those dry leaves are warm but ITCHY! Toward the end are good examples of batoning with a heavy duty knife. The hemlock boughs MUST be "shingled" beginning with a bottom course and working up by OVERLAPPING the boughs to shed rain and wet snow. Do one horizontal course at a time, placing boughs all the way from one end to the other before beginning a new course. (Yes, I was once a roofer.)

In my limited survival experience, you're generally better of moving during the cold night, to maintain your body heat. Not exert your precious energy to build tic-houses, get low quality sleep and move nowhere. Granted the absence of a strong breeze, you can easily maintain ample body heat down to freezing in nothing more than sneakers, shorts, and a shirt - as long as you keep moving.

You have no idea how happy I was to see you use that floor fire! I was literally just thinking about if it would work, seeing you do it just makes me happy! One thing I would add that might work is get a good fire going and get a lot of coals and then place the coals in the ditch you dig and cover the with the stone and then lay some fern branches over them! God that just feels so comfortable in my mind

So very impressed!! And am learning as I watch!! Spent 14 years in the military, but they don’t teach shelters like this, as we always carry ours with us. Awesome!!! Thanks

if you light a small temporary fire at the exit point of "floor warming system", it will create a draw when you start the bigger main fire, drawing in the heat from the main fire until it warms sufficiently on own.

What an adorable doggy you have. I am sure he makes for good company out in the wild. Also I see that he helps testing your structures for you. Simply charming.

That reminded me of a story, mine. A hot night in the Philippines, my Aussie mate talking over too many beers. That mate was an ex grunt and somehow the discussion veered toward survival and said something that I half heard. He looked at me serious as hell and repeated it drill sergeant like "If it smells like almond or peaches, don't eat it! I'm serious mate, that shit might save your life"... I've listened, I've never eaten something that smelled like almond or peaches, except the real stuff. Still alive :)

Another fine video young lady, I enjoy seeing how you have progressed each time you build a new shelter. You should be very proud

Great video and great soundtrack. Concerning that ground warming technique, I've read that initially one can start a small fire also at the chimney opening to help start the draw of warm air.

The forest sounds so peaceful. I was in lake Lecurn in Switzerland back in 2001 and the area was absolutely breathtaking. Sorta reminds me of that.

There are a lot of memories of my childhood in this video including the music. Thank you and great job.

This is awesome learnt so many tips thanks! Now I'll share one in return. If you dig a 2ft (60cm) deep whole big enough to bury a 2ft log laying down. Tie a rope round the log and then bury it with the rope sticking out the ground. Now you've just made an anchor that can hold a humvee on a 30 degree hill. Would come in useful then building the 3rd shelter!

I think the lean to shelter using the survival blanket was the best of the bunch. The blankets weight is almost nothing and more than one could be carried in your pack very easily. The only tools needed to create the shelter is a good a good knife and lots of cordage. Still no great weight will be added to the pack! Your method of pinning the crossbar to the two trees was brilliant! I will not be forgetting that method any time soon. Bravo young lady! You would do to ride the river with! P.O.

No question about it, she does a great tremendous job! Lilly is definitely an outdoorswoman!

If I'm repeating others, it's because I didn't read any of the others comments. That lean-to you did with the red emergency blanket; WOW! So simple. And if one was just out to bug out for a night or 2, and carried a tarp for their shelter, that would be the easiest system I've seen. Thank you for what you share!

Wow I'm very impressed by this KZread Educational video you shared. I learned a lot from you. Some of what you did I never even knew. Thank you and I really appreciate it. I'm going to try do some of things you taught today on a project I'm seriously considering doing in a few months for my disabled children and me. LOL, me too! But, that's why I'm watching these types of videos, so that if I get lost in the wild, I won't have to wish I was lost with an expert. Actually, people will wish they were lost with me. ;)
