    I've hurt my back quite badly while doing heavy deadlifts. I'm going to start again at a much lower weight and focus on perfecting my technique using Andy's advice - probably the most qualified person on the planet to give advice on deadlifts :) I don't trust personal trainers at my gym, they've never walked down that road, they just have a fitness certificate and the need to make a living.

    +stickman There's another really good video over on Supertraining channel with Bryce Lewis, a natural record holder, giving some additional setup tips for the deadlift. The advice he and Bolton are giving are gold. You're right not to trust those fuckin' gym trainers. Those certificates are worth just about enough to wipe your ass with them if they're printed on good paper.

    +stickman If you wanna go real heavy evade going around listening to dudes with 20 pack abs and bee waist. Even Ronnie Coleman is hurt nowadays. Look for guys like Andy, they really know what they are talking about.

    +Tyler Durden My back is much better now, started around a month ago with 60kg and increasing weight each week, now doing 200kg easily with no problem, will be increasing weight next month. A couple of key mistakes I made in the past that caused the injury: Not driving thorugh heels, the weight used to be on the front part of my foot (Andy's comment!)The big one, I used to jerk the weight up off the ground to help gain momentum, I'm sure this is what fucked my back up as everything goes out of position for a split second. Now, I just imagine the bar is an extension of my body and I simply just ease the weight up while keeping everthing tight, no trouble with my back at all now. I'm never gonna go back to my original strength but at least I'm deadlifting again :)

    stickman I had herniated 2 discs in a construction accident years ago, and used rack pulls to rehab it. Over time I was able to work back to pulling off the floor, but it took a while. It's taken me well over a decade but I'm back to pulling pretty heavy and recently PR'ed 735 conventional at 42 years old, although 99% of the time I train with submaximal weights. Strength came back very quickly, and as it did my daily pain levels dropped until I was pain free most of the time. You sure are right about not jerking that weight off the floor. I don't accelerate to max speed until the weight is already broken off the floor. When I break the weight off the floor, I visualize it just like if you were to push a heavy parked vehicle in neutral, how you start it moving by leaning in to it and slowly ramping-up your output, rather than sprinting up the vehicle like a maniac and slamming your shoulder into it. haha That jerking explosion makes you much more likely to tear a bicep, too, if you mix grip.

  • @z23xc5

    @z23xc5

    Yeah, exactly. I've learnt that if you jerk and ramp up too fast at the beginning, and something goes wrong, you don't give your body a chance to stop and drop the weight. Instead, you rip yourself right into the injury before you realize how bad your set up was. Once you have the weight off the floor it is now your glutes and hamstrings that is supporting the weight, that's when its a good time to go nuts and accelerate the lift.I wish I figured that out before hurting myself, lol

    Mixed grip deadlifter here. The tip about keeping the arms straight is good, especially since I have longer than average arms. It's also interesting how little knee bend there is. I'm going to have to experiment with that.

    I don't care how much he lifts vertical shins as basic advice is complete bullshit. For some body types yes this is the case. Look at how short his femurs are at 2:04. Ankle dorsiflexion and forward knee travel will happen with people with long femur to torso ratio. This guy is basically performing a stiff legged dead lift with a lot of low back and hamstrings. Almost no leg drive.

  • @dude157

    Eddie rolls the bar forward, then as he rolls the bar back his knees come forward as he drops his hips, this looks like he has low hips with knees forward, but if you look at the actual instant the bar comes off the ground, his weight is miles backwards from the bar, and his shins are vertical, hips are up. He then drives his hips through and pulls the bar into himself as he powers through to finish the lift. However, this technique is not ideal at sub 200kg weights, as there is a tendency to fall backwards. You need the bar to act as a counter balance, so you can feel secure sitting right back.
