To Be Clear: The Maine Coon Cat is a big, lovable, and intelligent breed of cat that originates from the state of Maine in the United States. It is among one of the oldest breeds of cats to exist today. The origin of this cat is still not entirely clear; however, it is believed that this breed came from a natural mutation. They are massive cats with long, flowing fur similar to that of an Angora rabbit. They are also known to be friendly, with a sociable temperament and excellent hunting skills.
Maine Coons are intelligent cats that are very curious about the world around them. These felines are known for their patience with children, even though they can be a little bit aloof at times because they are so large. Maine Coon Cats are also characterized by their loud purring, which lets everyone know when they're happy! Even with all this, this cat breed is not for everyone.
In this video, we will talk about 5 reasons why you shouldn’t get a Maine Coon Cat, and why they may not be the right cat breed for you.

It's too bad that some people take the video wrong. You are just giving a heads up on what might be a problem for some. Things that people may not be aware of. Better to know ahead of time then find out later and have to surrender the kitty. My MC found me. She was a tiny kitten that found shelter under a tarp in my back yard. We heard her little meows. I fell in love at first sight. We have 3 other adult rescues and a very small house but we manage and have lots of fun. Gracie Gray is my baby.

Oh cool. It's good to hear a long lifespan coz the cost and E. T. A on lifespan has been a concern. But it's all about foods and keeping diet and treatments as natural as in the wild. All my animals have doubled their lifespans since I use only raw and natural. Babies get special processed bikkies. But I still don't like it. But thanks that a brilliant lifespan. You give me more determination than I already had to beat the age limit.

Once you have a Maine coon in your life you will never be able to imagine life without them. We have just brought home a Maine coon kitten after losing our boy at 13 to cancer 6 months ago. We lost our beloved Maine Coon to a heart defect he'd had from birth. He was 13, and the love of my life. Death no longer frightens me because there's a chance the Rainbow Bridge is real and my boy is waiting for me! The last thing I told him before he slipped away in my arms was that I'd meet him at the picnic table in the shade, down by the stream. He'll be there. So will I.

We recently acquired a main coon cross breed. He just showed up in our yard one day and decided to stay. Yes we did look for an owner. Though he clearly was not used to people, he really wanted attention. At the moment he is sleeping at the end of the bed having decided living in a warm house is kind of nice. He must be about 15 months old, and after we started feeding him, he doubled in size. Everything mentioned in this video sounds exactly like our boy. I think he must weigh closer to 25 lbs and eats a lot, he’s not fat. Just a really big guy. Excellent mouser. We adore him.

"Though he clearly was not used to people, he really wanted attention." That's how I got my cat too. On a cold winter night he asked for help, but it took him more than two weeks to let me get near him. Then he capitulated completely ... and wanted belly rubs. Weird that he knew a human companion would be a good thing, and yet needed so much time to accept me.

I found my MC baby on the side of a busy road on a Friday afternoon around 5pm. Semis and cars were everywhere and a very sweet gentleman stopped to helped me grab her. Then we took her a block down the road to a vet. I got the wonderful news that she was healthy, 8 weeks and just what I had been wanting: an MC female kitten. It was the first time I have ever rescued an animal and I was over the moon. I named her Angel and she is everything to me. I love her so much. Oh, she's 4 1/2 yrs old now and floofy as ever.❤

I found my MC behind a Laundromat. The owner didn't speak English, & was walking around asking people to go out back. Most of the people spoke Spanish & were shaking their heads. When she came to me I thought she said "Gid" & I pointed up to heaven & she shook her head No & said Meow then pointed out back so I followed her out & saw this beautiful kitten. It was almost 100* & she was lying between a trash can & the wall & I picked her up & put her in the laundry cart while I took clothes from dryer. She was so patient & quiet. I pointed to an empty box behind attendant counter & it was given to me. I put her in it & went home. I never saw a MC & didn't know she was one. I have a 6.5 y.o. make tabby who is big- 13 lbs. & when I sent a pic of her to a cat friend, she right away said it's a MC & she'd buy her from me. I said that I had been praying for a kitten for Baby & once they can be assimilated to each other (after she's been un bathroom & they make friends by sniffing under door for several weeks), she will be the 3rd kitten Baby has raised (he raised a set of twins for my son). I thought she was an older kitten because of her size but when I took her to Vet I was told she was only 4 mos. old! I named her Honey because she's a light-colored (blonde, honey & caramel) calico & there's a honey spit on top of her head. Baby got so curious about her (& was so glad to know I fulfilled my promise to him about a lifetime friend (he missed the twins) that assimilation was quick! Hiney only had to be in bathroom 2 weeks! Of course I gave her a bath every day & spent a lot of time in there with her & had a small cat scratch tree for her. So now she is 8.5 mos. & almost as long as Baby (Vet says he's very long) & they adore each other. He starts cleaning her & after a little bit, she grabs his head & pulls it down & starts cleaning him! Of course he loves that! The twins were only with us for 6 mos. til they were trained for my son, so his time with them was spent being an authoritarian & looking shocked when they'd do their flying through the air tricks & other daredevil stunts (their dad was a wild cat so they were exceedingly active). Baby never got to experience another cat loving on him. But Honey... I thought that she was a very soft-spoken kitten, but then read online that MC's "whisper"! So cute, beautiful & shares action & adventure with Baby! She certainly has taken over our apt. with a take-charge attitude & her "Queen" style. I gave her instructions 1 day about not going under my chair upholstery cover (she's never bad but I was stern with ger( & Baby sat on fliir glaring at me for awhile. He has yelled at me in the past for putting her in the shower when she "asks" to come in with me. He hates getting wet & thinks I'm hurting her or drowning her. He can't understand why she likes water. He also attacked me 1 time when she was playing with me, got rough & bit me & I said "Ow!" very loud. He decided to bite me also for yelling at her! So many adventures; they play nicely then start a "play battle", chase each other, growl & then lay down at end to clean each other. I got a 7' cat tree & Honey claimed the top perch. Baby sometimes tries to get on it with her & she makes sure he knows it's her place! I tell Baby that God provided the perfect pal for him. I also learned that MC's have an M on forehead! Compared to Baby's, he has tabby markings but not a true M like Honey. I ask him if he knows that this "little girl" is going to be as big or bigger than him? I believe he realizes ..

He would come when called, he came to me when he was upset or hurt. He was an amazing cat in so many ways. He would not let me groom his belly and I had to take him to the vet, who has use anesthesia which got more dangerous as he aged. He was huge and when I held him up to my face his tail touched the ground. I am only 4’10. He died about 20 years ago and I still miss him often.

The initial cost of a Maine Coon can be offset by getting one from a breed-specific rescue organization. Also, the "small space" and "needs activities" problems can be solved by providing vertical spaces for them, such as ramps, carpeted shelves, and floor-to-ceiling cat trees (yes, trees plural). This also allows the cat to have some private space even while being in the same room with you. And while they do need frequent grooming, their fur doesn't mat up nearly as badly as a Persian or Angora's fur does, because MC's have more of a smooth outer coat than those other long-haired breeds. But daily brushing is the best way to prevent hairballs! My guy is a mix that I rescued as a kitten. He's 12 now, and I couldn't ask for a better companion. He's so smart that he's more like a room mate than a pet!

I had my beautiful MC for 19 wonderful years. Smart doesn’t begin to describe how intelligent these cats are. Though it made her really fun to play with, it was a double-edged sword. On weekends when I would try to sleep in, she’d sit on my dresser and knock something off. I’d open my eyes and tell her to let me sleep. While keeping eye contact, she’d knock something else off. Never breaking her stare she’d walk to the next item and knock things off one at a time until I got up. The flip side? On weekdays when I had to go to work leaving her alone in the apartment, she’d turn off the snooze alarm. She could figure out every new clock in under a week. No kidding. Through much trial and error, I finally made a cage for the alarm clock that I could stick a finger in to hit the snooze button, but she couldn’t get her paw in. She was such a loving cat! But be prepared if you are going to get one. They demand your attention....and they won’t stop until they get it!

I didn't evening know I had a maine coon until recently. I had 22 strays we fed. Tried to get help but no shelters would take any. There were 6 moms, 2 dads and 14 kittens. Unfortunately, someone let their 2 Pitt bulls loose and we lost one of the dads who was a tuxedo maine coon. He was killed along with 3 kittens. I took the one left of four in a litter that hid from the dogs. I have 5 other indoor mixed cats but I felt so sorry for this one outside, I had to take him in. We named it Tinkerbell because we honestly thought it was a girl. They have very thick hair so a couple of things were hidden. I got him fixed right away. Yes, I found out that she was a he. Then I got curious about the breed because the dad that was killed was about 4 foot long from head to the tip of his tail. I knew "Tinker" was a tuxedo but never heard of a maine coon cat. I decided to go to Google because someone said that was what he is. I Google "Tuxedo Maine coon cat". There was Tinker. White bushy whiskers and long white eyebrows. He was beautiful. He was born April 14th, 2021. He wanted to play with my other cats but they hissed and growled for territorial reasons I assume. He had a panic attack because none of the strays ever got mean to him. He now stays in my bedroom with me. He doesn't mind though. He likes to snuggle and watch TV and if I read to him he looks at the pictures. Very loveable and smart. Every morning exactly at 5am, he comes up and rubs his face all over mine and runs his paw down my face like I do to him when I pet him. He has his alone time either under my bed or on my dresser.(he doesn't knock anything off because I took things off when his big bushy tail cleared it in one swoop). Some of the strays have moved on or were taken in and no dogs around since last time. We made 9 houses on our porches (6 on one, 3 on the other with Coleman coolers and straw with 2 - 6 inch holes. One to get in and out and the other an escape door ). We still feed them every day. My tuxedo maine coon is my precious little boy. (my others in the rest of the house are too) Tinker doesn't mind the bedroom space at all. He even let one of the others that quit hissing in. He comes in usually once a day to play with Tink. (sorry this was so long) :)

I adopted a young Maine Coon from the county shelter not knowing anything about Maine Coons. When he grew, the fur on his tail "exploded" and he quickly grew larger and larger. He did things that no other cat I ever had. He liked to sit on the countertop above the running dishwasher because it was warm. A few months went by and I noticed my dishwasher was apparently malfunctioning. It was activating on its own and I figured it was a logic board failure that would spontaneously cause the appliance to start. Then I caught my Maine coon massaging the buttons on the sloped front control panel. He did this until the dishwasher turned on. He looked as me, then laid right back down on the countertop. This had to be a random coincidence as it would require him to have learned how to activate the dishwasher. I immediately taped a piece of cardboard over the control panel and the random washing cycles stopped. He had learned, probably by accident, that when he would jump from the countertop and use the sloped panel as a leap point since he was so big and tried to minimize his jump. He must have figured out over time that the panel turned on the nice heat producer under the countertop. Cats just don't do this kind of thing. When I let him outside, he would calmly walk up to small dogs with no fear or hesitation , smell them, than walk back to wherever I was sitting. He would leap the neighbor's fence and play with their dog. When both the cat and dog were tired, they sat side-by-side on their rear porch. Cat's don't do this kind of thing. He also came to me when I would call to him like a dog. I offered no "treats" to train him to do that. Wherever I am, he's in the same room. He has the largest vocabulary of sounds than any other cat I owned. If I accidentally trip over him, or step on his tail, he'll yell but instantly forgive me and turn right around when I'd call to him. This, and so many other things he does, makes this breed absolutely unique. I had to look up Maine Coons on Wikipedia and after reading about them, I realized this cat is capable of things normally not associated with cats. A gentle giant, for sure. But he does need a lot of room and a lot of attention. But I have to use a dog brush to groom him because his hair is so long. But even if I don't brush him, he never gets matted-down or tangled clumps of hair. If you want the unexpected, and the best most loyal cat in the world, there is no other brred to compete with a Maine Coon. I would expect the dishwasher incident to be disbelieved as it required several steps to accomplish. I would not believe it. But then I saw it. Absolutely incredible creatures! Just give them room, and a lot of attention, and you both will be fine.

    1. Grooming well once a week is plenty. 2. Space. Hmm. 50 metres is probably plenty, but split levels is great as it provides exercise. Letting them roam free outside is dangerous as they’re expensive and can get catnapped. 3. Scratching posts and boards are pretty essential. 4. They’re certainly social and like people. Best to buy two at once then they keep each other company. They really hate being left alone for more than a couple of days. 5. Expensive. Yes. Unfortunately. If you don’t feed them high protein foods they don’t grow quite as huge. 6. After you’ve owned a Maine Coon you will not want any other breed.

I don’t agree at all…. For the last 25 years I have had one or more MCs in my home. 1. If you start grooming at young age, brushing can be bonding time. They drop their coat twice a year and if they get clumps, my vet and or groomer have the correct tools to take care. They spend lots of time grooming themselves so hairball control is essential. 2. My cat can live in a huge home or one room. They live on love and if you spend optimum time with them, they are very adaptable. 3. They love their battery operated red dot 🔴 toy. Just set it on the table and it runs in 20 minute intervals. Mostly they need cuddles. Long feather toys are much fun. 4. Lonely? MC are like potato chips. Can’t have just one. Some prefer my company, some prefer a sibling. My girls and their rescue siblings share my home nicely. But I find they all crave humans, the most. My girls live to love me. The others learn how to be good companions from my MCs. 5. I sort of agree with you! But not completely. Yes they can be expensive and you must research the best breeders. My last purchase was $1200 each but now, due to popularity the price is more than double. They free feed as kittens and get 1/3 cup of good quality food twice a day. It’s not a lot of food but good food is debatable. I don’t do raw and I don’t do all protein. They need fiber too. Balance is key. Once a year check up at vet, twice for seniors. Expensive? To buy initially, maybe. But really the rest can be said for any cat breed. Or dog breed for that matter. Any cat/dog can need vet care, special sensitive tummy foods, good grooming, playtime, toys and exercise. But until your MaineCoon jumps into your arms, purring, nibbling at fingers and giving kitty kisses, you will not understand the what being a Mainecoonlady really means!

@@davidsuess8535 IMHO…. I would not recommend buying 100% American breed from any foreign breeder. There is evidence that foreign breeders are passing heart problems, hip dysplasia and other health issues caused by inbreeding. Additionally, the breed standards for appearance are altered such as extreme feral look, bunny ears, etc. This is a stunning breed that originated in America. AMERICA. Other countries have their own cherished breeds, including Russia. The Russian Blue is my second favorite breed but they do have issues with using litter boxes. If I was going to allow the cat outside to potty, it would be great but I keep my cats inside as it’s healthier and safer. This is IMHO.

He demands a LOT of attention, is very intelligent, and if he wants to get to the treats, he does so by jamming a cat toy under the door to the cupboard where it's stored. He's quite creative in how to get stuff done. If you have time for a dog, but want a cat, get a Maine Coon. They are insanely smart, loving, but also very time consuming.

He is now 2.5 years old about 25 pounds and his name is Merlin. He is my pride and joy I love him to pieces and he’s very sociable. 1. If a MC costs $500 that’s not from a reputable breeder and 2. It’d be great if in the video images of Norwegian Forest Cats wouldn’t be mixed in with images of MC’s. As far as grooming that will depend on the coat of the MC. Some have silky coats that don’t require as much grooming and some have more cotton like coats that need a lot of grooming. Keep in mind these cats are double coated so you can’t brush like a normal cat. You’ll need a very large litter box, one that has plenty of room for them to be able to lift their tail or you’ll be cleaning their tail often. Then there are the hair balls. Normally cats don’t have a huge issue with them especially short hair but long hair cats oh my, if you are weak of stomach get a short hair cat.

I never have to worry about when I'm away at work cuz my place is set up for cats with lots of toys they can play with while I'm away & my crew has just so much fun together. I'm just the butler! Louie is silver with white highlights. He's amazing. Big tufts of fur on his paws behind his toes. Incredibly long whiskers. Brick red nose. Purrrs like a lawnmower, HA! Don't know if he's just partially MaineCoon but he has all the purebred features & weighs 23lbs of no fat, all CAT! He loves playing with my little Raven-Poe who's a partially Lykoi cat who was lost & abandoned at 2 weeks old & I needed to bottle feed until weaning finally. Raven-Poe is just 10lbs. King Louie plays with him & wraps him up within his great floof until little Raven-Poe just 'bout disappears in the MaineCoon floof,HA! I have 2 other rescued cats, brother & sister tabby cats, one classic & one mackerel. My crew all appreciate having a home after each being lost outside during their earliest lives. They all love each other & play hard together. I brush them & obviously Louie needs a rake brush which he loves running across his magnificent long fur. Thanks for this informative video. Living with a MaineCoon cat requires one to speak CAT! Living with a crew like I have requires one to be a cat butler, MEOW???!!!

Our Morris was likely not 100% Maine Coon, but he had many of the earmarks. Most interestingly, though his coat was rich and long, it almost never required attention (which again makes me think he was a mix and not purebred). From the get-go, he had as few as two and as many as five other cats to play with, along with yours truly, so I don't think he EVER got bored. And he was an absolutely terrific friend and companion. We lost him in May of 2020, and I miss him a lot ... and yeah, I want another one!

I had a 22 lb male Coon when I was in grad school - my first cat! Almost as smart as a dog, VERY affectionate and, in the case of mine, NOT destructive at all, despite being alone at home for hours while I was in class all day. I only brushed him once or twice a week with no problems. He passed early due to FUS, and I've had other cats, but truly, once you've had a Coon, all other cats pale in comparison - though I've always wanted to try a Norwegian Forest cat!

I've had uh... 4 dogs growing up, and then a maine coon. My impression was that they're very comparable in intelligence too (well, one of the dogs was a bit dense). But 3 of the dogs and the maine coon were all very very smart. But after the Maine Coon I got a Siberian cat, and I had to completely readjust my measure of pet intelligence. I can't say if it's the breed, or just this particular cat. But I had to stop using "pet-baby-voice" with her, because she's so smart I feel kinda dumb doing that at her. Also she just refuses to respond to 'pet voice'. Her english comprehension is on par with a human her age (8). She's 'extremely' communicative with a wide range of very deliberately meaningful sounds & annunciations. And she'll act out in displeasure if there's any hanky-panky or horror films. She'll hunt bugs but come get a human if she finds a spider. Places her hairballs next to the litter box (usually), and then goes to find help to clean up. Likes pets if you are barefoot on the hardwood floor, but not if you're wearing socks on carpeting, unless she's leaning against a metal window screen (she's fairly static-y). Actually we couldn't figure that one out until she adopted the static-discharge plastic packaging (from a new monitor) as her preferred new bed-liner. Taught herself to open doors. Taught herself to use the toilet for number-2's. She actually prefers to be brushed while up on the bathroom sink, with her front paws on the mirror looking at her reflection (in the fashion of the humans). She's pretty cooperative and a bit of a people-pleaser (for a cat). But when there's a disagreement, the best way to get cooperation is to actually explain the situation in detail to her, and why you need her cooperation. And really, i'm just skimming some highlights. That she was spayed as a kitten feels like some sort of feline gene-pool crime. It's a bit like having a small 8 year old child with lots of fur and a speech impediment. Siberians are an ancestor breed to maine coons (through norwegian forest cats, the intermediary breed). They're the 3 arctic forest cats. So if it is a species thing (instead of just a freakishly smart individual cat), then it may show up in norwegians or maine coons possibly too. We got her because I was allergic to the maine coon (loved him anyway). And some (not all) family lines of Siberan cats produce almost no Fel-D protein (the 'cat' allergen). She's hypoallergenic for all intents and purposes. So long as she doesn't roll around in some other allergen.

We had a beautiful Norwegian Forest cat....he was huge at 28 pounds. Very much a 1 person cat, he followed me everywhere...even into the car! One day we had a furnace repairman come out, and Pud walked up to him just as he pulled his head out of the furnace, the guy jumped up like he could climb the walls to get away from Pud, yelling "WHAT IS THAT?!?". I said that's my cat, and he just wants to play. Pud was SO disappointed.

My black silver Maine coon is just a little over a years old he is the most intelligent cat i have ever had, he has taught him self to play fetch and open doors, and i was able to teach him to “come”, and “sit” on command. He follows my every step and has to be with me every where i am and right up in what ever i am doing. He isn’t very cuddly like everyone claims Maine coons are, he would rather just hangout with me, doesn’t want to be pet too much.

Leo is so affectionate it's a treat to return his affection. Never had a cat that loved me so much. He doesn't need constant grooming because he grooms himself a lot and combs himself in his own way. Has all his hair going in a perfect direction. He's such a kind gentle guy even though he was feral until he decided I was no threat. Once he made up his mind he wanted to live in my lap with constant pets and belly rubs. He could live on just a sofa with just me since he's still afraid of others after four years. And he's extremely healthy. My tabby girl hates him since she's so jealous and tries to smack him but he just shrugs her off. I love mean suki but leo is the best boy. This video is a waste of space to me.

I rescued my big boy Jer Jer from an RV park. His mother was poisoned and she carried her three kittens to the mangers door and went out in field and died. He grabbed my heart. He learned to ride in the car and loves to go on trips. He is now 12.5lbs and 12yrs. just recently had a bout with kidney. Better now. He started getting baths when he was very young. Loves his weekly bath with cream rinse . He will come tell me when he wants his bath. He is very smart and he gives hubby and I his whole heart. I hope to have him another 5yrs. We will be lost without our big guy. They are a wonderful companion and breed!

Our cat may not be pure bread, but is every bit of the size and personality of a main coon. We adopted him from a local shelter. He is a mix. He was easy to spot because of the long tufts of fur in his ears and on his tail. Also, the size of his kitten paws was a hint that he would be a large cat. I will always look for this type of cat in the future.

He loves to play fetch and follows my wife and I everywhere. Constantly wants to play. He's not so much a lap cat, but that's fine with me. Always close by though...Sometimes too close😄 Never had a cat so interested in what I am doing day to day. No sheding yet, but I'm sure that will happen in time. Ike is a great cat, looks exactly like the very first cat shown in this video. Highly recommend getting one.

She did eat more than I did and she went everywhere with me, because I lived in a studio apartment. She loved the dog park, baths and grooming and taking naps on my lap. Once you have lived with a Maine Coone or Norwegian Forest you will find that cats are good fur friends to live with.

@@annettebelliveau4335 honestly, Annette, it can be any animal that attaches him or herself to you. It could be a horse, a donkey, a cow or a bull, or a bat, (I have seen bats that do that, as well) sometimes it can even be an empathetic person who helps with seizures. But if I wanted a cat and I was sure that I could take my cat everywhere with me, and not have anyone tell me that I can't take my cat into the place where I go, I would go to the humane society and pick one or let them help you. Or a farm cat. Callie, the kitty that saved my life, and a lot of other people's lives, was just a simple farm cat. I gave her good retirement from her job, though because animals can suffer stress the same way humans do.

I was lucky--I adopted a Maine Coon cat from the Kennebunkport Animal Shelter in Maine. A stray, she was found in the port city of Saco, Maine sashaying down the street looking for sailors. The grooming is almost a side job and you forgot to mention that their nails are like talons as they become older. She has never bitten or clawed anyone--she is a dream. Her name is Minx and she is 19 years old, and she still rockets around the rooms of the house at night, but mostly she sleeps now. We love her very much.

What? grooming is an issue. Periodically, the knots have to be clipped out of the fur. And being large in some cases, more space is necessary for them. mine is MUCH happier now that he has a bigger house to run around in. Also having decades of experience with coon cats, I have found that they are very sociable cats, sometimes rather co-dependent, like a dog. And the larger ones are expensive in that they eat more than other cats. They are bigger. Maybe you have only known smaller coons, plenty are more 'average' cat size of 10-12 lbs, but a 20 lb cat needs slightly different things. And the initial expense? that is the only rubbish part. Breeders are a rip-off. It's just snobbery. If you truly know a coon, you can recognize one as a kitten and get one for $30 adoption fee at a rescue or something.

So I have to spend time every day to slowly cut away the matt and brush other parts daily. It looks perfect but underneath there are tons of hair and you need to spend time to care for them, so I think the video did a good job mentioning these points

It's no secret that this breed requires a LOT of effort, but I would be prepared to put this effort in. It'll all be worth it, they're such a beautiful, friendly cat! I'm moving in with a couple of my friends in a year or so, and one of them has already decided she wants a German Shepherd so it's important that we get a cat who is known for getting along with dogs. I've always loved Maine Coons, they're my favourite breed! As a dog person who loves cats almost as much, another thing I love about this breed is that they're known to act a bit like dogs, so it's like I get the best of both worlds. I'm hoping to find a relatively young Maine Coon at a shelter because I'd really like to adopt, however I'd still like to introduce the dog and cat at a young age to increase the chances of them liking each other. (My friend has established that she definitely wants a healthy German Shepherd so we'll most likely be getting it from a breeder). The biggest downside for me getting this breed would be the fact that they're not great for people with cat allergies; my mum is allergic to cats and while most cats (including this fluffy one I see a lot when I go on walks) don't give me any reactions, I have had reactions to my auntie's cats so I'm really hoping I won't get a reaction to a Maine Coon. It depends on the danda(?)/cat dandruff they have, apparently... even though Maine Coons have long fur, I'm hoping that with enough care and grooming I won't have to take medication. Also, I'm wanting the pets to be inside pets, does anyone know if that helps too?

I am the proud servant of 5 of these majestic Maine coon beauties, they are high maintenance and cost a lot in pet insurance, 6 monthly vet health checks, very high quality food, a large outdoor Catio built for them and indoor cat tree’s that are specially designed to be strong and sturdy. They do need lots of grooming, but they are the most intelligent, loving and inquisitive cats, luckily I am home all the time as i took early retirement, and they do not like being left alone for long periods of time and can get anxious if you are not around.

Our Maine Coons are wonderful loving family members. Fred and Whiskey, a brother and sister pair (spayed and neutered as young kittens), and it is very much a "Big Brother/Little Sister" relationship (Fred has a larger frame than his sister). He takes care of her, and she tells him what to do. They spread their love and affection around to all of us (my wife, my grandson, their little dog, and I), and are very intelligent. They have specific methods of communicating with all of us, letting us know exactly what it is they want. It only took then 6 months to train us. They have their own Master Bedroom, but are so loving and considerate, they allow my wife and I to sleep there too. And they are very large, particularly when stretching out in bed (yet they can maneuver themselves into the smallest of boxes or dresser drawers). We didn't know what we were getting when we got them, just two little kittens who sadly lost their original owner when they were only 3 months old, after only two weeks in their first home. Happily, they were able to adjust quickly. They weren't the first cats I've had in my life, always had a cat and a dog my whole life, but now I couldn't image a life without Maine Coons specifically. They are truly unique and have wonderful attitudes. They spend their day hunting (we have a good-sized property with basically a forest as our backyard and beyond). They spend their evenings with the family, traveling from room to room making sure they spend time with everyone, and grooming... lots of grooming (they are very particular about their looks, and spend a lot of time working on it, helping each other get those spots they just can't reach themselves). They love to play with their little dog, he's a purebred Bitta (Bit a this and a bit of that, Terrier and Chiwawa mostly), and can get pretty funny especially with the dog's high energy spurts. But when it's time to stop, the Coon's team up and herd the dog to the couch where he lies down. He's usually pretty tired out by that time anyway. They are the coolest cats.

My Maine Coon was awesome. He got along with EVERYONE. Dog, cat, visitors you name it. He came to me as a stray. His fur was terribly matted and took extensive grooming to get rid of the mats. He loved to be brushed and that made our grooming/snuggle sessions easy. He could walk on a harness like a dog. If you can manage that a smaller apartment would be okay. He listened much like a dog too. I suggest finding one as a rescue, not from a breeder. Save the money to put into their care instead. Having a Maine Coon as a companion is an incredible opportunity and worth the time, energy and any money spent. They are truly special gentle giants. If you are or have a child with special needs this is the cat breed I’d recommend. They’re intuitive and gentle.
