5 Reasons Rogue One Ruined Star Wars - Reckless Disagreement (Tarkin, Princess Leia)

    The Chinese civil war started in 1927 but the communist rebels didn't centralize command until 1936. Just because the rebels weren't unified doesn't mean they weren't doing anything.

  • @StarWarsomania

    @StarWarsomania

    Still, 25 years is a long time to go without unifying against a force capable of taking you all out. And I assume the reason the Chinese Rebels didn't organize was due to them being disorganized individuals and small groups scattered across a giant empire that had existed irregularly for 2000 years, not governments and militias that had recently been forced into subservience to an empire that were already in communication with each other.

  • @xanderabbey8529

    @@StarWarsomania I know this is a serious necropost on my part, but much of what was said about the Chinese rebels can be said about The Rebel Alliance. It's actually worse for the Rebel Alliance: imagine trying to coordinate some resistance against a galaxy-spanning empire, with other splintered, disagreeing, conflicted, and distrusting rebel fighters who are also scattered around the galaxy and are likely hiding as best as they can. The coordination problems only increase in places like the Star Wars universe, or any large scale (usually galactic- or univese-scale) sci-fi/science fantasy story.

    @@xanderabbey8529 Another necropost, but I would add that communication lines may have been blocked/censored by the Empire. Not to mention I'm sure the Empire also monitored communication lines. Making them a high risk to use. It may have been years for some to establish a connection with other rebel forces under such circumstances. There is a reason during war times that groups have often created secret codes to communicate. If someone suddenly takes over, that code of communication isn't there, it has to be created, they couldn't rely on any existing code, as there would be no way to tell if the Empire knew of it.

    @@StarWarsomania The Empire was established in Revenge of the Sith. The time jump between RotS and ANH is 19 years, not 25. The Imperial Senate was only abolished in ANH, so one might imagine that the first few years of the Empire looked even less like a total dictatorship. Plus all the animated shows tell us that there were already several rebel cells that worked completely independently of each other and worked as small scale operations limited to just one planet or small sector of the galaxy and not interested in restoring the Republic as a whole. Even after the various rebel cells organized into a loose Rebel Alliance about 6-7 years before ANH, many of the political leaders still believed that armed conflict can be avoided ro kept to a very small scale. And after they realized that internal reform cannot change anything in the Empire, they spent the next few years building up their arsenal so that they won't get obliterated instantly.

It does have few mistakes- chirrup and baze appeared out of nowhere, had no personal connections to the plot(although were quite likeable), the start was a bit slow, and the end music should been more ominous and threatening when vader and his fleet arrive. And I fact of expanding on saw gurrera and bodhi and cassain some more time could've been given to the space battle with vader and the alliance fleet

    Tarkin made a large contribution to many parts of the death star. Krennic was the director of the scientists that built the super laser but Tarkin had been in charge of the project for years already. Plus Krennic's "achievement" was really the achievement of the scientists which he executed earlier in the movie so Krennic is not much better than Tarkin.

    You're taking this at the wrong angle. It's not that Tarkin didn't contribute, it's that Krennic gets ZERO credit. The fucking super laser is what MAKES the death star! And he gets only demotions and death threats for his trouble? Culminating in a final sacrfice for the Empire? The hell guys, that dude should be a hero in the eyes of the Emperor.

  • @REDDAWNproject

    @REDDAWNproject

    6 жыл бұрын

    Again, canon shows the laser was being designed by the goddamn geonosians in Ep II. krennic just lead the SCIENTISTS to do the final work. Also, Krennic never gets the chance to talk to the emperor because Tarkin is a vicious politically ruthless manipulator who is friends with both Vader and the Emperor. Tarkin is a cruel and coldhearted bastard and that's what makes him so great a villain. He pushes everyone away and will kill billions if he perceives the slightest threat to either his power or galactic stability, which he considers one in the same.

  • @The_Noblest_Roman

    @The_Noblest_Roman

    I'll follow that up by saying it's also hard because Disney is already fumbling with their new expanded content. For example, in Tarkin, the eponymous character is overseeing the construction of the Death Star. He's been involved since the beginning. But in Rogue One, they do try their hardest to make it look like he's some political climber than stole Krennic's shit at the last second. If you've read the book and seen the movie, then you can come to the same conclusion that Older General Skywalker did - and I should add, that I did too - but it's never stated as such by the materials themselves, leaving it open to interpretation. I'm not dissing a piece of media for leaving something for the consumer to work out on their own, but generally I'd prefer it if such things were a bit more subtle than something that could potentially reframe one of the series' great villains as lesser than they really were.

    point is, one doesn't know exactly, and it does not matter, the scene is relevant in context of a opening scene and setting things up for the viewer. many things don't work, p.e. some senat still existing, the death star is comical, the force etc. etc. they didn't bother with greater explanations, because it was in favor of a working fantasy/adventure-movie not nessessary. adding more backstory and history to some popcorn-flick, which just make things more unbelievable, because you're pushed to think twice about things, is just downright stupid.

    @robert ball - if you fire HE munitions at an unprotected nuclear reactor the HE explodes, destroying the reactor, but the reactor doesn't explode or go critical. most reactors are quite stable and need something more than a nudge to get them to explode. in fact nuclear reactors going critical don't explode in the way we usually think of (a nuclear explosion), the reactor gets so hot it creates plasma around it and the systems can't contain their coolant due to expansion. this spreads nuclear material into the atmosphere and gets the nuclear waste coolant to go into the atmosphere as well. it is pretty bad news, but not a nuclear explosion, and blowing it up won't get it to become a nuclear explosion either. basically he made the nuclear reactor into a nuclear bomb, that simply had to have certain parts fail for it to go boom, which can be achieved by having it get hit with some HE. though by Hollywood logic cars explode easily and things that produce lots of energy go boom when destroyed, so you aren't exactly wrong in your assumptions.

    Qui-gon Johnny Exactly. And I can imagine that before they captured Leia’s ship they merely suspected she was part of the rebellion. Capturing her with the plans would be the proof that they needed because remember that at that point one of the officers told Vader “Holding her is dangerous, if word of this gets out it could generate support for the rebellion in the senate.” OTOH, sending a phony distress signal and finding that “all aboard were killed” would make it look like Vader and the Imperial Navy were the good guys on a rescue mission. Obviously later on after everyone believed she died either on her ship or on Alderaan, it made it a lot easier for Tarkin to order her execution. But yeah, besides Leia, you got a whole ship of crew members who you can question and torture for information on the rebellion.

  • @isaacbryce2748

    Doesn't seem much like a counterpoint. You want info about the base? Track and capture one of the other dozens of ships that escaped the battle, blow up the one with the plans that, if destroyed, exponentially increases your chance at victory.

    Qui-gon Johnny ...and Vader could use the mind probe on the rebels, since Leia was capable of resisting it (a trick her adopted father taught her) so that they didn't have to track Han 's ship therefor the means of torchering the rebels would have been SOOOOOOOO much easier. Some may argue that the stormtroopers had to kill all the rebels in order to take control of the ship, but as was shown in the means of capturing princess Leia Organa, the could of set their guns to stun and carry the fainted crew to holding cells until they were able to function again to be intrigued and I bet a star they would have found the base quicker, Alderaan still intact since they had no means of doing so since they didn't need leia to tell them where the base was because one of the rebels cracked. Another thing is way didn't the empire just use the means of hyperspace travel to get the the rebel base faster? I guess for the plot and climax which makes since in the story world, not in the real world. BTW the rebels involved in rogue one were recognized. Few my hands hurt! XD

He saw a corvette fly into hyperspace with the plans. There more than 1 corvette in star wars. Her passing off that it wasn't her corvette in the battle makes sense. And he said PROVIDED by Leia. Which she did, she gave it to him. And Rouge One did get credit and recognition for what they did. It was Rogue Squadron who attacked the Death Star. Where do you think they got the name Rogue from? Did you watch the scene? The different rebel cells didn't all think the same way, as they just said, they had only NOW gathered their forces, thus implying that they had been operating as several groups, so one set of groups didn't believe Jyn while others did, hence the disagreement. Rebellions/Resistances do not operate as single unified structures like was portrayed in the original films, they generally operate as cell groups. This big meeting/gathering seemed to be a transition between going from a cell system to a more centralized alternative government structure, so they were disagreeing as separate groups and perhaps working to destroy the death star was more of a unifying event then we realized.

    So you said that Leia's credibility was undermined because she didn't actually physically do the fighting to get the plans. But the dude says provided by not something like captured by Princess Leia. Did she not provide the rebels on Yavin 4 with the plans? Did she not give the plans to the rebels? Also, in the opening crawl, it says that Leia is the custodian of the plans, aka she is overseeing them. Not once in the entire movie does it ever say or imply that Leia was the one who captured the plans. You are just scraping the bottom of the barrel with that argument. Also, about the Empire being good and the rebels being bad, that is war. People's morals stretch during times of war. Ever heard of the phrase 'the ends justify the means'? Basically, the rebels did all the terrible stuff in order to win the war. Sometimes you have to play dirty in order to win. The nuclear bombs that were dropped on a Hiroshima and Nagasaki? The US could've invaded Japan, but countless people would've died. Here, justification of dropping the bombs was that it was necessary to end the war. Need another example? During the American Civil War, Union general William T. Sherman used the concept of total war to devastate the south. Would the Union have won the war without Sherman burning Atlanta to the ground and destroying houses and such while cutting through the South? Maybe, but the justification was that it was necessary to win the war. See a common theme? Also, I don't know about you, but my definition of good doesn't include blowing up an entire planet, a city full of innocent people, and your own military compound, as well as killing a group of scientists, and slicing down rebels with just a lightsaber. Oh did I forget committing jedicide, as well as purposefully creating a civil war? Oh, what about choking your own officers and choking the captain of a ship with your hands? I think it is pretty clear who the good guys and the bad guys are. Next, Admiral Motti. I don't think Vader walks around and just force chokes people for no reason. I also don't think Vader brags about force choking people and shit. So do you think the admirals have seen what Vader is capable of. Most likely not. Now, for Tarkin taking the credit, that is what happens in the world. People take credit for other people's work all the time. How many names of soldiers who fought in WW1 and WW2 do you know? Maybe a handful, if that. Now, how many of the generals and leaders do you know? A lot more than soldiers. Who is the key to success for the generals? Soldiers. Do they get credit for victories? Sure, but not nearly as much as generals. Probably just like in Star Wars, casualties are just numbers. If a general dies in battle, it is a huge thing. But when a normal soldier dies, who really cares? It definitely matters, but still not as much as generals. The leaders are always the ones who get the credit, instead of those who actually did the work. You really scrapped the bottom of the barrel on this one, and I mean really scrapped it. Like you saw a few tiny scraps of criticism and decided that they were good enough to put in a video. If you are going to try and criticize movies, at least make the reasons sensible. All of these could be easily disproved with just some common sense of real life and Star Wars in general. Maybe you should actually watch the movie and then think about the reasons rather than using whatever ridiculous shit popped into your mind as a video.

    1) Um, you do realize that ship models are not limited to one per, right? Like how there's a ton of Star Destroyers out there? So unless they had reason to believe their specific ID was found out during a hectic battle (doubtful, you're usually focused on shooting ships down rather than going, "hey, let's figure out exactly what ID that ship is! I mean, we're trying to wipe out all these enemy ships but who knows, it could be useful shortly later!") Leia's lie could have worked. Yeah, it's Vader, he'd probably search the ship even if evidence suggested he was off-track, but what's Leia supposed to do? Simply pull a Bender and go, "welp, we're boned!" and admit everything? That's stupid. 2) "provided by" They never said she obtained them first. Also, he's talking to a bunch of pilots, most of whom they know will likely die, and are racing against the clock. Heaven forbid he not stop and talk about the life stories of the Rouge One cast. 3) Really? I think Tarkin being a slimy piece of shit who took advantage of other officers fits well, it adds to Leia's line about his foul stench if he has even a poor rep among some of his colleagues. Also, let's not act like this guy had a perfect track record, he was actually shocked that Leia lied about the base's location and stupidly ignored a safety concern that cost him everything. 4) I'm pretty sure every fan assumed Vader was Force-ing it up plenty between Episodes 3 and 4 so no, I think we all assumed Motti was a massive idiot already before Rouge One technically confirmed it. 5) I don't even know what you're arguing here. What, politicians and bureaucrats can be incompetent, wow, who knew? And you know, maybe, JUST MAYBE, Jyn and co. not getting all the credit is kind of the point. Sometimes people can make the ultimate sacrifice and not get much credit while others who contributed less or the same get way more credit. That's life. Sorry if that disappoints you but I don't think Star Wars is ruined because the movie chose to get real on how some soldiers don't get remembered properly.

    So Vader just was patrolling the galaxy looking for this model of ship in the hopes it was the one he saw? Come on man, don't be stupid. Leia knew she was had, but obviously was still playing it to try and bluff her way through since the Senate did still exist at the time. She hoped her diplomatic status would get her through. Yes this video is dumb, but go about explaining that in a better way.

    Yea, I agree. It makes sense in a bureaucracy to transfer a weapon project from someone within R&D to someone in operations, like Tarkin. Building and running a combat vessel are two very different things. There is also huge propaganda value to crediting surviving members of a critical mission with its success, not to mention in line with grooming Leia for command. Anyway, This video is super nitpicky, your response was at least as in depth.

    I didn't think that they made the bad guys look good and the good guys look bad, I think they just made it more realistic because in the other Star Wars movies - yes they're supposed to be 'wars' - they had sides that were OBVIOUSLY BAD and OBVIOUSLY GOOD however if we look at REAL wars there are usually two sides doing what they need to do to win the war, which is what Rogue One is more like and is the reason Rogue One is more realistic. I noticed you mentioned the that they made the bad guys look good but you also mentioned that they made the Empire look like assholes and that you didn't like that... ? Ya see, what the filmmakers did was make the rebels and the empire more realistic by taking the obvious GOOD and EVIL away whilst simultaneously giving the audience a reason to hate the Empire thus still creating a morally GOOD and EVIL side like in real life. So MY conclusion is that Gareth Edwards was trying to make a REALISTIC Star Wars movie rather than making the child like good and evil stories we see in the rest of the family friendly Star Wars movies like The Force Awakens, so with that said, he made Rogue One different from usual Star Wars, but did not ruin Star Wars. - The StarWarsGuru

    It's not that Padme died in childbirth. It's that Anakin decided that hacking a bunch of children to death with a lightsaber was a better idea than asking an OB-Gyn how the pregnancy was going, but who knows, maybe the Galactic Senate had a shitty health plan, and a former queen(from the only planet in the galaxy that wasn't a wasteland) couldn't afford the doctor's visit. And it was all on the word of a guy who'd been lying to Anakin for 15+ years. And wouldn't you know it, Palpatine was lying! He had no idea how to save Padme. Then he lied again and said that Anakin killed Padme, heavily implying that the twins died too. But strangely, Anakin -- who'd spent his whole life challenging authority and being a rage-a-holic -- basically went "Ok", and was blindly loyal to Palpatine for the next ~25 years. Revenge of the Sith was an absolutely terrible movie.

    See when you say Princess Leia "Obtained" the plans, you're wrong. The clip you showed said they were "Provided" by her, not at all obtained. Hell, the title crawl of the original Star Wars says that a group of Rebel Spies got them, not Princess Leia. Another thing, Grand Moff Tarkin isn't stealing credit from Director Krennic. The clip of Tarkin you showed said HE was the one to come up with the battle station, once again your poor editing decisions disprove you. The Rebellion isn't incompetent, the fact that they split between not believing Jyn and surrendering is realistic, because let's face it, if someone heard about a battle station the size of a moon, they wouldn't believe it until they've seen it. The Rebellion as a whole didn't attack Scarif. A commander who decided to take some ships with him did. It's as if you didn't even watch this movie, and only got a summary from a friend or something.

And now that I think about it, she was stalling because she gave R2 time to get to the escape pod instead of Vader tearing up the ship himself with all of his forces and the two imperials that noticed only saw an escape pod with no life forms so they correctly assumed it was a malfunction because of the damage on the ship or something.

    Watch Attack of the clones, you'll see the death star plans being handed to count dooku by the genosian ruler. So that's one thing they got wrong. The rebellion IS incompetent. Jyn is taken to meet with the rebel leadership, why? She's a person they're bringing in for one mission, she shouldn't be anywhere near the leadership or the main rebel base. Then to allow her to carry a blaster? If they got a mole/imperial plant by mistake, all it would take is one shot in chauffeurs back and a quick word with an imperial officer and Yavin IV would be a cratered wasteland! As for the attack on the research facillity, Krennek did more damage when he killed the scientists, The rebels couldn't even hit a shuttle parked on a landing pad that's directly in the way of their shots! that's strike 2 As for not believing Jyn, Jedda isn't that far away, with the speed ships fly through hyperspace you could get a reconnaissance flight to Jedda and back in time for the big meeting with the rebel leaders easy, the death star might not still be there but, a crater you could park a moon in is pretty good corroborating evidence that something big with a cannon powerful enough to splinter a planet was in the neighborhood recently. strike 3, the movie sucks! Bonus round. As for only a portion of the fleet being at Scarif? It took a rebellion within the rebellion to get the third act of the movie going, other wise, the rebellion would have ended right then and there. Luke and Obi Wan are still on Tatooine, Han gets killed by Jabba for not paying his debts. Alderaan is OK but Chandrila, being the home planet of Mon Mothma gets turned into an asteroid field by the death star in response to her bitching at the emperor in the senate BOOM, HEAD SHOT!

    Assaf Goldlust A New Hope was a recycled use of the heroes journey beat for beat, but that doesn't make it a bad movie just like it doesn't make the force awakens a bad movie. It represents a departure from the muddled, nonsense storytelling of the prequels to the classic style of star wars. It absolutely has issues and plot holes just like the OT, but to cast it aside as trash is pretty small-minded I think. For the record, Rogue One fell in a bit under TFA for me, mostly for character reasons and the endless callbacks to the OT (yes I believe it was more egregious than TFA), but I also don't think it was that bad, just very mediocre

While your points are excellent, I think many such critical commentaries disregard the fact that since this is a story taking place before a great story that was already told long ago, it deserves some creative liberty and some forgiveness for these issues. Not all of them, but for example the Leia getting credit for the plans... they did credit her for providing them, but not necessarily for acquiring them. If we are to interpret it as the latter, we face an immovable prohibition against telling this story. So, anyway, mixed agreement/critique, but I like your video style and your energetic demeanor. Yes I do. Disney is just milking the series for as much money as they can get. All they are doing is living off the nostalgia from the original trilogy. Star Wars was DONE in 2005 when the last Episode was released. The true ending is Episode 6. That is where Lucas intended it to be done, and it should have stayed that way. I was AGAINST more Star Wars films when they announced it back in Oct 2012, and I STILL AM AGAINST IT.

    I disliked it for two reasons: 1) prequels are boring (you know how its going to end). Sure most movies you can guess at a ending....but prequels are special in that you know EXACTLY how it will end. But the journey... fan boys whine.... 2) the journey involved idiot opposition. Every single stormtrooper was as always a fumbling idiot whose armor once again is worthless plastic aimed soley to hinder their movement and vision. Script writers: please! the.galaxy.is.controlled.by.a.despotic.military.they maintain power with brutal efficiency of their groundtroops, not a clown car of fumbling buffoons. ie. this series is not cool sci-fi, it's kiddie disney cartoons.

    I think to say legends is a disgrace is a bit much, I'm sure there were parts of it that definitely needed to be reigned in a bit and cleaned up, but that's bound to happen with that much content and the amount of good content outweighs the bad vastly IMO. As for Mr. Edgy Hexecutioner, you have no idea what a weeaboo is obviously, please check yourself before you wreck yourself next time. The ventilation shaft. Galen designed this as a weakness that can be exploited by enemies of the Empire and that it's implied in Rogue One that the Grand Moff as well as Palpatine did not know or were not aware it. If that's the case, then why were defensive turrets in the trench in A New Hope? It makes the whole point for Rogue One illogical.

  • @thefilmwhisperer1105

    Vader couldn’t just “blow up the ship” (Leia’s ship) because apparently the Senate was still something to worry about, as established in Episode IV when Vader argues with an officer about it. Leia was a prominent official and kidnapping her, let alone KILLING her, would have generated MORE sympathy for the rebellion in the Senate. Plus, there may not have been official confirmation that she was on that ship. As for all other arguments, Rogue One was brilliantly written in a way that makes sense with what was established in the movies, because otherwise, yes, it would be a valid question about why we haven’t heard of these people before. And this movie actually makes the empire look less dumb because now we know that the Death Star didn’t have that fatal flaw because of dumb engineering. And the rebellion changed its mind on surrendering when it saw that the “Rogue One” crew could make great strides on their own, allowing them to swoop on in! Now, if we can just have a movie that explains why the 2nd Death Star allowed an entire SHIP to fly through it, haha. So...no. TLJ ruined Star Wars. Not Rogue One. Rogue One is actually the best of the Disney Star Wars movies so far.
