"Yes, ma'am, you say a crazed killer/shady government agent/mythical monster/alien did all this? And you absolutely had to stick this implement right up there? Do you have anyone who could corroborate your story? They're all dead? And the monster evaporated in the sunlight? How convenient. No, ma'am, it's not that we don't believe you, but we have to consider you as a prime suspect in a multiple homicide. Now, put the axe down slowly..."

It's also really annoying when the police just let the survivors leave, as if they don't need to bring them to the station for further questioning. That's what always bothered me about the end of Die Hard; the police probably have a thousand questions for John Mcclane (and they probably also want to get him to a hospital to treat his extensive injuries), but they just let him get in a limo with his wife and drive off. I'll admit, it's a cool way to end the movie, but to me it's the least believable thing in a movie full of unbelievable things.

So that's the truth! As an italian who have always watched a lot of american movies (since America is the major movie producer and seller worldwide), I've always wondered if americans actually hung up phone calls randomly after a sentence, without saying "bye" or something like that. I've always made jokes about how much time we italians spent in saying goodbye to one another at the end of the phone calls comparing to americans which just hung up at the end of a sentence. My whole life has been a lie! ahahah

Even the good stuff, like small towns being quant and willing to accept anyone for who they are, it's actually the opposite, you move to a small town that you and your family have never been too you will instantly become the 'weird" person.

Would it confuse you if someone in a film were to say to the bartender "A pint of beer. Monty." or "I'll have a glass of Monty" and then gets a beer? By association alone, Monty would clearly be the brand of beer in question, so would it really be that all that confusing?

The whole reason for that isn't to represent actual culture. In writing (novels, screen writing, etc) people are told to cut the fat and get to the gist of the conversation. Only so many minutes/pages a work can be. So polite niceties are cut to save time (and because some "experts" call that boring.)

You missed Hotel's and restaurant kitchens. Movie characters walking through Restaurant Kitchens and Hotel back of house areas will not be ignored, they will be stopped by staff and politely turned around and walked back to the front of house areas. Also people infiltrating Room Service, Function staff or Housekeeping, would not just be allowed to walk in and start working randomly. They'd need to apply for a job. go through interviews, orientation, and several weeks training. Anyone just randomly trying to go through a staff entrance would find themselves stopped by a security door and most likely Security staff.

You forgot, "You need to wait 24 hours to file a missing person report."

In my country you xan contact police in the first minute, especially if it's a minor.they will help searching immediatly and give out information to all police officers to habe a look. Also they check typical hiding places and runaway places.

However the Police will issue the missing person report only after 24 hours have lapsed for individuals over 18 years of age and men. However if you are able to give a clear suspicion as to why the person is missing, police may generate missing person report even before that. A Missing person complaint is a complaint which the police will acknowledge and immediately register the FIR but a Missing Person report which contains the photograph of the missing person, description etc will be generated only after 24 hours (unless the MP is a woman or a child or minor) wherein the description and photo will go out to the police database and also using a copy - a newspaper publication can be done.

I hate that about phone calls too. I also hate the way they smell in movies. They sniff really hard several times before they realize there's a disgusting smell somewhere. You don't have to snort every bit of gross smelling air around you to know something stinks. Just breathe normally.

You can portray heartbreak by clinching your hand across your chest and throwing your arm over your eyes and wailing "woe is me", or you can show a subtle, sorrowful look across your face. It's one of those old acting bits left over from the days of stage acting, before they could put a camera in your face. They had to be more emotive for the people in the back of the room. Now, not so much.

You might inhale deeper to make sure the smell wasn't an illusion, that's accurate. Now, if you do it loudly and several times, however; or worse, whip your head all over the place while you snort that scent...

Bad science. BAD SCIENCE EVERYWHERE. Seriously movies tend to just gloss over scientific explanations that make no sense whatsoever. Also movie timing is ridiculous; "Lemme just run this through this giant database; Oh I instantly got the answer!" or DNA test being done in a few hours or being unable to trace a call because the person on the other end hung up. NOPE.

Actually hackier nerds have desktop environments designed to use only the keyboard, like it was in the good old days before they came up with mouse. There are still only rare instances where two people would type in the same keyboard, though.

Bad science bugs me. What’s worse is when the show tries to explain the science and does so poorly. For example the CDC scene in Walking Dead in which they tried to explain the zombie virus, and showed neurological function of a human pre- and post-virus. They showed just the brain stem being active in the zombies. Sorry, but the brain stem controls the most basic and automatic functions of the body. The bare minimum to keep someone alive. if the only brain activity is in your brain stem you would be comatose in the best-case scenario. Not only would you show no intelligent behavior but you would have no access to sensory information, be able to move your muscles to eat/walk, etc.

One of the biggest ones is how in the movies people seem to have an off switch on them which simply knocks them out precisely for a needed amount of time. Watch any combat sports knockout: people take headkicks to the face from the world's best fighters and for someone to go absolutely, completely unconscious is an extreme rarity - people get dazed and disoriented, but quite rarely literally go to sleep - not to mention, they usually wake up in a minute or two, not hours. A person may indeed be knocked out for hours if he was hit with an heavy, solid object, but in that case the unbelievable thing in films is how the same person just wakes up, dusts of their jacket and carries on to kick ass. Not, you know... Suffer results of a concussion and possibly die without medical help.

In reality the severity of a head injury is judged by how long they were unconscious. Anyone knocked out for several hours has major brain damage and/or is dead or will soon be. Most likely brain dead. Getting knocked out in a real fight usually lasts around 30 seconds. Give or take. But if you're hit on the head and able to be picked up, carried into a vehicle, driven to a place, carried into a building, put into a chair in a sitting position, held there while you're securely tied up. You probably won't survive for long with that much trauma unless you get immediate medical care.

Anything to do with cameras. "Enhance." "Wait, hold on, analyze that will ya." CAMERA RESOLUTION DOESN'T WORK THAT WAY

The defibrillator in basicly every movie or series they are used. magical current impulses dont bring ppl back to life if the heart stopped, cariopulmonary resuscitation does. a defi is just used to stop ventricular fibrillation - as the name already indicates, so it actually stopps the heart when its not beating correctly rather than restarting it. that this shit is still present in modern film and tv is so bull. i mean it can literally cost lifes if ppl that somehow get hands on a defibrilator think, they can restart a heart with that thing.

+John Doe because most of the time when people having a "heart attack" it will start with ventricular fibrillation. this is a very dangerous state because the brain wont get enough O2 which can cause serious damange pretty fast. to make things worse, during that time its practically impossible to use cariopulmonary resuscitation to any greater success. thats why u have to stop the heart first using a defi to be then able to restart it properly with CPR. I didnt say that it isnt an important tool. its probably the most important tool to prevent sudden cardiac death. the way it work is just the complete opposite of what film, tv and even games (like battlefield) suggest. in the very end tho CPR is what makes the heart beat again and no current impulse can do that, thats just complete hollywood bullsht

+Gordon Arthur I remember watching a documentary where they interviewed a cop that had gone undercover for some time in the dope game. He said he felt retarded the first time they were sent to pick up a few bricks of heroin because he saw in movies how they dig their fingers in and taste it, except he didn't know it was heroin. The only real reason I could see to do anything like that would be to try a small amount, if the substance is white, and see how numb your mouth gets (more numb it is generally means its not as cut). His didn't numb at all, he got a finger full of heroin (generally very brown looking) and it tasted about as bad as you could imagine a processed drug cut with nasty shit would taste like and the crew member with him gave him the dumbest look.

+Gordon Arthur Well you forgot number 5. In order for the officer to recognize the drug from just a little taste, that means he had to do drugs prior, so he can learn the difference, right? Furthermore he had to do a plethora of drugs and acquire experience in order to be able to identify a drug so quickly, from a plethora of possibilities.

Number 1 also applies to School of Rock. How does Jack Black impersonate a teacher for weeks, basically kidnap a bunch of kids and then end up not getting arrested AND opening up his own music after school program?

How about the fact that the vast majority of movie plots hinge on the premise that adults can't have simple conversations? Like, the "conflict" (as in, the reason the movie exists) is something happens, it's all a big misunderstanding, and the entire movie the characters run around being mad at each other because they can't talk like adults and clear things up. There would be literally no plot in a lot of movies if writers stopped doing this. It's really lame though and I'm tired of seeing it.

Roger Ebert identified the "idiot plot," which requires the characters to be incapable of noticing something that's perfectly obvious to the audience, otherwise the central problem would be solved too soon! (One example is the Princess Diaries sequel, where her mother wants to marry her off and the pretender to the throne is young, single and handsome...)

I think that got started a long time ago with a show called “Three’s Company”. The landlord or someone overheard a part of a conversation and ran with it, even though it totally pertained to someone or something else.

people buy food or a drink in a movie. take a bite or a sip and that's it. this always annoys me. if I pay 7 bucks for a drink 8m dam well gonna drink it. and nobody in real life lights a cigarette takes 2 drags then throws it away.

I hate it when women scream when they find a dead body, even if the dead person was old and died in the their bed. Or when they see a dead person lying on the ground. A real person would assume it was a sleeping homeless person. Or at least check to see if they were dead, at which time they would not scream. They might swear but not scream. People only scream when they are surprised or under attack (having a spider land on you is both). And people screaming when there is an explosion or the lights go out. I was in a crowded grocery store during a thunder storm when lightening hit the building and the lights went out. There was a huge crash and sudden darkness and no one screamed. A couple of people swore. But mostly there was a brief moment of quiet until people started taking out their phones and using the light from their phones to continue shopping!!!! The store had to use a megaphone to tell people to leave because the cash registers won't work without electricity. The customers would have happily continued shopping in the dark.

@Roger Balcer Not only in that movie. Daughters are what feels like ALWAYS super scared and screamy and refuse to move in moments of crisis until their parents waste precious time to calm them down. I don't know how real children are, but I think they would rather just do what they're told because they know this is not the right time to act up. If even mommy and daddy are scared, shit's gotten real.

indeed, you keep your finger over the safety catch ready to push the safety off and then pull the trigger. people running round tense areas with the safety off in films is almost as bad as the other cliche of cocking the weapon (i.e. the process that puts a round in the chamber) after brandishing said weapon for dramatic effect; ffs you do not threaten someone with a weapon that you haven't made ready yet

Some guns have the safety mechanism in the trigger, so you are actually sometimes meant to run around with your finger on the trigger. It's still only something you should do if you think you might actually have to fire it in the very near future, but it isn't always the sin it's made out to be

I love the scene in just about every crime movie where the witness is alone with the killer and blurts out, "I know what you did and i'm going straight to the police!" Duh. Way to get yourself killed, but they seem to do it every time.

Btter still: phone rings. Character answers. Person at other end says "turn on channel 3. Now". Character switches on the TV (which comes on instantly) and there's the news article, BAM. To answer your question: no, of course it's not possible! Given that most news articles on TV are no more than 30 seconds long, by the time the TV has switched on the story would be pretty much over - never mind dialling the number, waiting for the call to ring, waiting for the other person to answer...

One thing that my girlfriend and I always discuss after horror movies is how the main character watches all their friends die or be tortured in front of them and then at the end of the movie everything is fine. No post-traumatic stress, no grief or emotional damage they just walk away to their normal lives!

+Robert Davidson Yeah, the problem with rendering a billionaire truly "bankrupt" is that it's not a light-switch achievement. As the video pointed out, he would have liquid assets and certain things paid for in clear. For creditors to come after him would only result after legal delays and wrangling. If they wanted to completely isolate him financially, it would have been better for Bane to "hack" into the IRS or something so that all his assets were frozen or seized by the government, which *can* work as quickly as shown.

None of these bother me as much as the movie (and tv) belief that the human heart is like a car engine, and you can jump-start it with electricity.

How about the fact that you cant stop the hackers from penetrating your firewall, but you can program a nice little progress bar that shows to the nanosecond when the hackers have penetrated your firewall. :)

nalk20 although not likely it is possible. A lot of hacking is algorithmic so you could calculate when it will be completed but not necessarily be able to stop it in that period of time.

What about the worst one of all? : 'Call me!' 'Ok', End of scene. No one exchanged #'s?! How can you call someone when you don't have their #?! That's not reality!

Everyone who orders a beer in a movie just asks the waiter, "Gimme a beer." The waiter never stops to ask what kind. Especially weird since most of these scenes take place in bars, where they have a ton of different kinds of beer.

It’s like that in Sweden. You can say ”a beer please!” and the bartender will give you the house draft beer, the cheapest.

Also the "out of frame out of sight" that was a good joke in silent movies but that make zero sense in suposedly realistic thrillers. Something that should be visible (or at the very least audible) to the character long before they get into frame still manages to surprise them as if it came from outter space.

The phone bit, not saying "bye". FINALLY! I frigging HATE movies doing this, it's just rude.

Don't forget how people answer the phone in movies too. "Talk to me," or "Yeah?" .. everyone says Hello? or informally something like what's up?

How about the loud noise lights make when they turn them on? It always makes the sound of a prison gate slamming shut or something!

+bradlbe It's the big, heavy industrial switch that makes the noise, not the electricity. The sound is believable to me. When I was little, all residential wall switches make a loud click-clack sound. You couldn't turn on the light to check on the baby without waking the baby. There was a transition to silent switches.

And fighting moves and pre-fighting coreographies cut the air making "woosh" sounds as if people had long staffs for arms and legs. That's probably specially the case in martial arts movies and those Japanese rainbow-colored live-action supeheroes with giant robots. It's possible that there are even head nodding noises, as they also nod a lot.

People have actually started doing the whole not saying goodbye thing at the end of phone calls. I used to work as a receptionist and, while it makes sense for someone to do that when they're angry or something, most of the times people would do that would be after perfectly normal conversations. It used to irritate the shit out of me. Like, where's your common decency? I'm not a fucking robot! Spare 2 seconds to let me know that I don't have to continue talking into an empty receiver. Okay, rant over.

The FDIC is the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation. They have nothing to do with the stock exchange. That would be the Securities Exchange Commission or SEC They deal with suspected criminal activity in the stock market.

Imagine a movie that includes 20 phone calls (like X Files type stories), you're probably saving 1-2 entire minutes of redundant goodbye stuff by cutting it out. With that said, they typically show us people dialing or at least answering, so, my theory has its flaws. ;)

The phone thing has been bugging me forever, but I assume it's just a custom to save movie time for other "more important stuff". Like, you don't see people going to the bathroom unless it advances the plot for some reason. Still, not saying "goodbye" never ever in phone conversations is weird.

The phone thing is part of a larger "Yeah, but..." to do with all dialogue. No-one talks like people do in movies and TV. They, um, pepper their speech with, like... random pauses and punctuations, get sidetracked, and unless they are delivering a speech they have previously prepared for some reason, rarely go on for 2 or 3 minutes on some topic or other without ever leaving a gap that someone else will try to jump into, even if it's just to agree with them. But, if dialogue were REALLY realistic, it would suck. There would be no flow, and it would sound odd to us, even though it would match what we hear from everyone we know every day

#7: Cars racing around in town ALWAYS plow into a fruit cart! A FRUIT CART!! Are there that many obligatory fruit carts that cars HAVE to drive into??

+wmfivethree Agreed, there could have been way more logical ways for Bruce to become bankrupt. For instance, having board members that are plotting against him, like Miranda and Dagett did. And since the movie takes place 8 years after The Dark knight, they would have had plenty of time to slowly bankrupt the company and Bruce along with it.

if one were to judge american culture by our action adventure movies they would assume that guns were disposable items that are flung on the ground as soon as you run out of bullets, they would conclude that guns in america were dirt cheap

The one that pisses me off the most, is when a character knows a seriously important piece of information......but doesn't tell ANYONE and for no reason. Not out of spite, or anger, or jealousy, or for two snicker doodles. The writers/directors do this so it keeps the show going and enhances the tension and drama. It's known as a McGuffin. It means they're being fucking lame and lazy and don't know how to properly write for that moment, so they just have the character NOT tell anyone. For no reason.

that's not what a MacGuffin is. A MacGuffin, is a plot device that drives the story forward, it is usually important to both the protagonist and antagonist. Some famous examples of MacGuffins are; 1. The Death Star plans or simply R2-D2 - Star Wars 2. The Ark of the Covenant - Raiders of the Lost Ark 3. The One Ring - The Lord of the Rings What you are describing is simply a plot hole.

Well, right. In math, it doesn't make any sense to differentiate. Common denominators occur with the same frequency, and so least and lowest can easily be interpreted as the same thing. Used in a social context, though, least common and lowest common can more easily be thought of as entirely different things. For example, Adam Sandler films are successful because they contain a lot of fart jokes, sex jokes, etc. Everyone gets that, because everyone farts, has sex, and so on. These kinds of things are often referred to as "lowest common denominators" because of their commonality, not because of their actual value, which cannot be truly quantified. Alternatively, a sitcom writer might write the character of Gary, a gay man who is secretly attracted to a straight character, Horace. They exist to help transgendered people transition from male to female or female to male. Because this denominator is least common rather than lowest common, the writers would probably not expect most viewers to know about it, and might even find a way to work that information into the episode.

Of course I don't just go up to him and say "give me a whiskey", I say something like: "What's a good whiskey within this-and-that price range?" I've never felt they're annoyed with me for that

i have been arrested almost a dozen times and never once was I read my rights at the arrest it was always during booking sometimes several hours later I was given a print of my rights they read them off I was asked if I understood if yes sign at bottom

DeNiro actually addresses the “taste the drugs” thing in “Showtime,” a movie I am fairly certain only ten people watched, and two of them were my husband and I on a shitty date night attempt when our kids were toddlers (thus compelling us to see a movie-any movie-on those rare occasions when we managed to score a babysitter.)

I'm from Brazil and for the longest time I actually thought that Americans didn't actually ended the phone conversations, that they just hang up, you know... like a cultural thing. Then I found out it was just in movies.

What about the movies were as soon as the final bell goes at school the class dart for the door even when the teacher is still talking, mostly associated with American movies. Im not American but im not sure this happens, im sure the teacher says when you can go. For instance one happens in Transformers near the beginning when Sam (Shia) is talking to the class, when the bell goes everyone just gets up and leaves.

*RingRing* "Hello? Oh hi Character! A dead body down at the docks? No prints? No I havent fixed my.. you say that you want me to stop repeating what you're saying? "

Lol, I'm an Englishman and I always thought that's how Americans were on the phone... How rude! Good to hear it's not true.🤭

Also, no one in action movies ever get PTSD. After fights to the death and explosions, the characters always seem to be alright the next day.

+Mike Hermida To be... fair(?) most veterans who have experienced combat apparently don't experience PTSD. I've only heard this a few times, and I tried looking it up again before commenting - I found the same answer but not directly from any known reliable source (this time.) The number is said to be between 10% and 25% of veterans who have seen combat developing PTSD. While that is tragically many people, it also puts them in the minority. So maybe that's frighteningly realistic(?) Probably not though as the rest of them seem likely to have other problems. Like depression and bi-polar disorder

futurestoryteller From experience with my husband having been in a combat area, twice, I can say, at least for us, PTSD is certainly caused by being in a situation such as theirs. However, I agree that most who get it from a combat situation are probably ones who were heavily attacked or had heavy losses. My husband had it because of how the military trains and some certain things that happened on his bases in Iraq. However, the issue he mentioned here was a typical civilian getting PTSD from some very traumatizing events categorized as "action", which any "normal" person most certainly would be affected. Military people are trained to some degree to know what to expect, civilians are not and I would wager an educated guess that 9 times out of 10, they would have severe flashbacks/repercussions from their experiences.

Jess B1110 I'm just presenting statistics, if they are to be believed; most people who experience trauma (luckily) will not develop PTSD, that's more or less across the board. There are certain specifics. For instance, a person who is assaulted is far more likely to experience it than someone who experienced a less intimate trauma, like a car wreck. That's certainly not to say that it is unrelated to their previous (or ongoing) situation, like your husband's war experience. I never said that, combat obviously causes PTSD. It just may not do so as commonly as people think. I don't think that minimizes anyone's suffering. I don't think it should be looked at like a competition. Questioning "who was traumatized the most?" or "what kinds of people are more likely to be traumatized?" There's a statistical probability of mental trauma. I think lower likelihood is a good thing. One bad experience is enough, and reliving it is hell. The plight of that is understandable, and worth treating with care, that doesn't mean we can't be happy for those who don't have to suffer through it, even though they've been to some of the same places

Also, if Miranda-thing worked like in the movies, criminals would claim every time that their rights were not read. Police in the other hand would always claim that the rights were read and "of course criminals would say that". It would make no sense.

NOTHING about Batman makes any sense. Any serious Gotham City supervillain would have simply shot him, long ago.

Nothing a person can wear is completely bulletproof. It is just a matter of how much of which ammunition you fire at it really. And even if the shot doesn´t kill him, it will still knock him down, break some bones or make him unable to catch his breath, just by the sheer momentum of the projectile. It´s not like you´re invincible with a bulletproof gear. And I didn´t even bring up grenades.

+Alex San Lyra That's what I found so unsettling about the explosions in Gravity. Adhering to reality, the explosions in that movie were completely silent other than the musical soundtrack and it kind of threw me off until I realized that that is what would actually happen.

+Gary Horsman Yeah, Gravity hit quite a few solid notes with regard to realism. Did you now that "space trash" really is a problem? There's so much stuff up there now... satellites and such... that NASA is worried that what happened in that movie might actually happen irl. Apparently, if one of the satellites gets hit by some space debris, it might might shatter and set off that chain reaction in the movie. Kinda scary. o.O'

Alex San Lyra You're right. There is a lot of garbage up in space and no feasible solution to clean it up. As far as I've heard, the scenario in Gravity of a cataclysmic collision between debris and space stations or other manned missions, though conceivable, is not likely given the various orbit heights each occupies. This is from people like Neil deGrasse Tyson. In any case, great movie.

3:29 loved it when Sylvester Stallone tasted the drugs and whipped around with that gun in his hand aimed right at the guy's head.

I've been wondering about the phone thing for years, but I concluded that that was the way Americans ended phone calls. I always thought that it was weird.

Anthony Hargis well they must identify themselves when they take legal action against you for example they can't tackle you to the ground and slap handcuffs on you without revealing their identity however you are correct in that they can say whatever the criminals need to hear in order to stay undercover

I've never seen a movie/TV show that portrayed that as an actual rule. But I have seen a movie where SERIOUS CRIMINALS actually seemed to think that: "The Departed". Lol. Leo DiCaprio joins Jack Nicholson's gang, and IMMEDIATELY the police are 100% more efficient. They ask him if he's a cop, and Leo says no. And then the bad guys are like "Well, if he says he's not a cop, then he's not a cop!"

"Magic police spell." lol. Loving this channel.

What about eating food at restaurants. Nobody in hollywood understands how that is done. The characters never touch the food in front of them and they have a brief conversation and after that they usually walk out without touching the food at all. Like every couple breaking up. In real life people still eat the food first or at least get the food in a container

It's because everybody complains about movies where things change on the plate every time they had to edit the scene from multiple takes. So now they tell actors not to touch the food, because it is just too damned hard to make every single breadcrumb and noodle and drop land exactly where it was at the same point in the dialogue in the previous take that will get edited in after this one. They already have enough work getting the actors to move their arms and legs to the same positions.

I thought you were going to mention how people never take a bite out of their food in movies. Like in sitcoms when the mom makes break fast and they sit there and talk for a 3 minute long dialogue and then run out of the door with their back pack and never manage to take one bite of their pancakes, toast, or cereal.

You know in movies (like Constantine) where the guy stands on a desk or chair, holds up his lighter to a fire sprinkler on the ceiling, and all the sprinklers spout water? That would not happen in real life. Fire sprinklers are installed to prevent property damage, so only the one near the fire will be set off. If Constantine had done that IRL, only the sprinkler above his head would've been activated, and he would have been the only one that got wet in the scene. This always bothers me when I see it in movies.

51stcenturygirl Sprinkler systems are designed to prevent as much fire/water damage as possible. If all the sprinklers on the floor went off at the same time... think of all that property damage that could have been avoided if just the sprinkler above the fire went off. Why flood an entire floor when you could just create a system that allows each individual sprinkler head to activate as the fire spreads? This way, maybe only 2 or 3 sprinkler heads will need to be reset after the fire is put out.

Ah yes, it depends on the installation and country. Thats the very reason, smoke detectors in my premises raise an alarm, but not automatical sprinkling, since they are easy to set off for false positives. The heat ones immediately sprinkle, and of course only there where the glass broke.

+Brendan Nikola I really thought they were going to show that! There's this part where she's like "Where the hell have you been Mulder? I've been trying to reach you! You just hung up on me and I couldn't get a hold of you for three hours!" lol Seriously though, why didn't they show that?

If somebody abruptly ends phone conversation , I usually assume that one side off that conversation lost their signal(it has to happen sometimes when you're moving while speaking), so I call back in a minute

Vary rarely does anyone in a film ever pay for food or drink, whether it be in a Montana saloon, a New York bar, a Texas food truck, a Pennsylvania diner or an LA restaurant.

In real life, it's true, we don't just hang up without saying goodbye. But watching characters in movies say "hi there" and "talk to you later, bye" or whatever would IMMEDIATELY start to feel obnoxious. It's actually horrible screenplay writing. If you want to see this in effect, watch Tommy Wiseau's "The Room." The characters in that movie all say "Oh hi, [character]" and make all kinds of dumb small talk -- some of it is sort of realistic, even -- but it's *painful* to watch on screen. A better screenwriter would cut those meaningless hi's and bye's because they waste time and do nothing to move the story along.

The most silly mistakes in American movies are the way how foreign countries are shown. When an American movie plays in Paris for example, you can see the Eiffel Tower from every point. It seems that Paris has at least 52 copies of this landmark all over the town. American movies about other countries are also full with flags of these countries. In every second scene you can see a flag even it's not necessary in this countries to hang flags everywhere. My "favorite" mistake is the fact, that in foreign countries the people speak better English than her native speak (and they speak American English not British English which is taught in the most schools). Often they can't speak her native language at all. Germans in American films mostly speak something that is at best a distant realtive of a true language.

+Maret83 Completely agree and we share same "favourite" mistake. But seeing how horribly unrealistic Hollywood is about it's own country I'm not surprised how bad it is about other countries...

I wonder if Christopher Nolan was encouraged to heighten the cartoonish aspects of the financial crimes. James Cameron mentions getting in trouble for having Sarah Connor lockpick a door in a realistic fashion. There are ways to make such financial crimes interesting, but ti would come down to a choice of being completely unrealistic or adding another 40 minutes of exposition to a movie that is already pretty long.

Thank you so much! Living in Europe most of these movie tropes made me wonder what the hell was up in the US. So it's all just Hollywood shenanigans! :D

I just hate the stuff with mobile phones. Either everything beeps, when you answer or hang up, every single thing the character does on the phone causes noise. Even worse when they are meant to be talking on the phone but you can clearly see the phone is on it's home screen. It's just so simple and the audience will get it.

Sally Field's character ignored the judge's order. The judge did not change her ruling.

I heard a story from a guy in the Navy whose boat once picked up a bundle of cocaine dumped off a smuggling boat. A DEA agent was on board and decided to look tough and taste the cocaine, sticking his knife in the bundle and getting a taste. It immediately caused him to have a heart attack, and he died on the spot.

The FDIC would not have frozen Wayne shares. The SEC would have. But yes, SOMEBODY would have.

+futurestoryteller tbh, I'm one of those people who listen in on every conversation in the room, then I usually focus on the most interesting one. Diabolical plans tend to be interesting. Just an aspect of being the quiet type.

Another thing all movies do is depict all cops as useless, corrupt or just plain jerks. They never believe people who call them for help because their situation is so unbelievable it must be a prank, quote endless red tape as an excuse to not arrest rich or foreign people and instantly throw the hero in jail based purely on one criminal act/piece of evidence while the villain is allowed to tie the system up for months and stay effectively free because of technicalities. I know it's a movie, but these clichés are getting boring.

SuperSongbird21 So I see this comment is nine months old and you surely don't care but I have issue with your statement. The examples in this video pretty easily apply to movies across all genres, but yours doesn't. Cops are typically depicted as useless in action and horror movies, but they're pretty helpful in romantic movies, comedies (when the plot doesn't require them to be bumbling), coming if age, family, and dramas. That's of course just my observation and opinion, but I felt it needed to be said.

haha, that was funny!The thing that I always notice, especially with CSI-type dramas, is that when they're showing somebody something on a computer screen (test results, etc.), the actor is always seen typing something on the keyboard rather than using his mouse to pull up the test results. They type, but there are only graphics of the screen. Its odd!

And of course the computer shows a big flashing "hacker alert" warning that someone programmed their computer to do instead of, like, blocking whoever was trying to hack it.

CyeOutsider I always hated how computer screens in movies look like they're running super HD images, streamlined animations, and moving data around like the matrix. A real CSI lab looks like it's trapped somewhere between the late 80's and mid 90's with computers running Windows at it's base level. Also why do so many labs in movies and tv have shitty lighting?

This is a great list. I was surprised when I had an up close and personal confrontation with the police (it was a mistake, it really was) but I was accused of shoplifting ice from a gas station (again, I really did not do it!) but when the officer questioned me, he didn't actually read me my Miranda Rights, he gave me a piece of paper that listed them. He told me to read it and then sign at the bottom in order to show that I understood them (I was a smart ass so I read them all in front of him for about five minutes). Well, nothing came of it, but you're absolutely correct: you can take a suspect into custody w/o Miranda, but they need to either hear it (or more likely sign a form with the Miranda Rights) before questioning. Another thing is that movies think that a citizen can just "drop the charges"if somebody is arrested for a crime against them or their property. No, wrong. You can't "drop charges" once somebody has been arrested; once the police get involved, it's no longer up to you.

Geoffrey Zoref they do not have to mirandize you unless the intent is to arrest you. Questioning does not require them to give you those verbally or in writing.
