Those high frame rails saved my life. I was in a bad accident 20 years ago. Had a 1993 Vette and was clobbered by a drunk driver at very high speed. My Vette was obliterated into fiberglass dust. A combination of the seatbelt locking up and those high frame rails is what saved my life.

I'm near 70 years with a bad foot, and a fused neck,I still manage getting in and out of my 87 rag top, easier with top-down. getting in is fairly easy as I have the gravity assist entry option, unfortunately, it works against you getting out, some folks seem mildly amused at my egress methods, though one guy(my age) while chuckling added,"don't worry,I have even more trouble getting out of mine. It is reassuring to know you have plenty of frame around you,I just agreed to buy a '95 coupe to give the 87 a stablemate, and for whatever reason, it seems much easier to get out of. My 87 has the added cables for the hood release, they work well, I will have to replace the hood opening cylinder, as it does not help any more, and that sexy big hood is HEAVY!

The reason for the high frame rails is that the car did not have T tops with the center part of the roof the cars top came completely off there fore structural strength for the car required the higher door sills I own a '89 my father owned a '89 that he bought brand new and he explained this to me

@@chrisbudai409 That's right and the reason for the bolts instead of latches on the targa top. I think the top carries some torsional load. The car seems stiffer with the top in place.

I was a Corvette tech in a dealership.I can't tell you how many times I had to show owners how to release the parking brake on a C4.The top not getting latched and flying off was also common and it would cost them $1400 for that mistake.Knowledge of the car you drive is a must.

Thank you for the video. My brother had nearly that exact Vette when he died in 06 of cancer. Same year, color etc. Only difference is his seats and other minor interior pieces were caramel colored. We had to let it go later on 07. Lots of great memories with that car. When you showed the shot of the frame rails I was hit with the memory of the smell of his C4. Brings up a lot of emotions. Especially it being the same color.

Great video. I would also add the headlight gears. I would think most C4 owners have to go through this at some point in time. I spent the extra money to upgrade to brass headlight gears instead of the stock nylon. Works great with no failures. Those nylon gears are crap.

FYI Get a flat piece of metal bent in an “L” shape that battery can sit on . Make sure it’s wide enough to fully cover the side of the battery. The way a thief steals those cars is Jamming an ice pick thru the panel an into the battery. It drains the battery which allows thief to pick up the car and tow it away without the alarm triggering.

New subscriber here ! I had a brand new 1976 Corvette and was just about to trade for a C-4 when the family came along and took all my time and money. After the college tuition and appartment rent, (whew) I was again ready for a sports car. I decided that I would buy what I had planned in 1990 and looked for a year to find my white C-4 with 55000 miles ( Carfax no problems), and it was a 6 speed stick which was exactly what I loved. On the 1990 it has a glove box, so that quirk is gone. Getting in and out is good exercise for a senior like me so that quirk is no problem. I just put in a new battery, and I now plan to install the emergency hood release (thanks for that tip) . I love the car and keep it spotless- my wife has named her PRECIOUS. The worst thing I have found is the noisy first gear and I've been told this is a 1990 bug. Thanks for posting Jeff.

They thought t tops were next so that's why they were bolt on it was some kind of loop hole but right before the c4 was released the government decided not to ban t tops with latches. They used to have a kit to replace the bread box with a shallow glove box. I kind of like the bread box, I hit my head on the top of the glove box, the first time in my brothers 67 427. He dropped it to 1st on a turn and I didn;t expect it to decelerate as amazing as it accelerated. You might want to look for a nice sill covers they're easier to clean and look great. Good combo choice in your vette.

I have sat in a C4 before and I totally get why the high rails were nixed for the C5 as it is a common complaint of Corvette owners that they had to do body gymnastics to get in and out of the C4. Given the typical demographics of these cars it would make sense they would address this in the C5. However, I think that is part of the charm of the C4 because you feel lower and this makes it feel more like a cockpit where you lose that to a degree in the C5. If you compare a C4 to a C7 the layout does feel rather similar in how snug you fit when you are seated.

I LOVE THE PHILIPPINES I agree. It's not that hard. Move the seat all the way back and just sit on the frame rail and slide in that way. I also put my left hand on the bottom bolster and slide on the back of my hand to minimize wear on the leather. Works well.

It is still lacking in stability with the top out as my '96 vibrates very much. I never ride with it out because I do not want the vibration over time causing wear and tear to my vehicle. Plus when putting it back in it is difficult to get to seat just right without having a little leak in the corners in mine.

The only thing I didn't like was, when I took off the top, I could tell that the body was unstable. turning into a driveway or parking lot with a small rise on it, I could feel the car twist because it just wasn't braced well enough. Damn fast, great mileage, comfortable and looked great.

Very informative. I've had my 1988 C4 since 1989. I still have it but now it's retired because it won't pass California smog tests. We did replace that bulging thing on the passenger side. We don't remove the top very much so dealing with the screws was no big deal. The battery removal had me stumped. I kept looking at it and saying there must be an easier way. I finally figured it out. Quirk # 5 was new to me. I did not know about an aftermarket kit for unlatching the hood. I may look into that.

My personal quirk on my 1987 C4 Corvette is, when you open the hood, it seems that getting to the several parts and removing them for service or when they need to be fixed, will be very easy. Well, I can tell you that nothing is less true! For example: try to remove the spark plug on the passenger side that is closest to the fire wall.....with ordinary tools......I wish you good luck! D é n k C h r i s I knew it because the Supras use the same setup and the part that takes the longest is finding the tool pack. The actual removal may be 10x longer than my MR2 Turbo but that still only amounts to a few minutes. Luckily my MR2 uses the car’s key to release (but only if you’ve locked it. Other wise it’s just a release lever while holding the secondary safety lever. 2-3secs tops

"Emergency release cable." Translation: public access to your engine bay. That's only good for garage queens. For those of us who daily drive, the $15 tool works excellent. Easy to make one if you don't want the prefab. I keep it behind the driver's seat. No cable break yet, but one did slip out of the retaining clip. On a trip to Tail of the Dragon, of all things. I recently put new lifts on my hatch. Love triggering the release now at the grocery store. It pops open fully now with authority. Good luck with your switch fix.

If you are stepping in that car you are not entering it correctly. You are supposed to back in, sit down, and spin around and to exit just do it in reverse. Actually this is the proper way to enter any vehicle as it saves on the wear to your seat edge by keeping your backside from brushing it a thousand times which ultimately wears a hole in the leather or velour seats. I have a '96 and before anyone rides with me I have to educate them on this maneuver. Also, while riding with the targa top out is cool I never do it because it decreases the stability of the vehicle and causes a lot of vibration which can be felt in the steering wheel. Over time this will have an adverse effect on the vehicle with all that vibration loosing joints and such.

Thank you for your video on C-4. I purchased all new weatherstripping as well as re-set top, still leaks! Also common problem is headlights that don't lift properly, replacement plastic gears available. I agree a simpler latch system for top like C-5 method is superior. Brittle ABS plastic fascia trim. Do not over tighten top bolts, plastic top will split in two dead center.

You have a very nice Vette! I am always pleased when younger people can appreciate these cars as they are awesome! I will offer a piece of advice on your hatch release as this is a tricky repair. I have a 1988 and mine also failed. The solenoids are no longer available unless you can find New Old Stock. You can dimple the case near the output with a center punch and it may ground the coil, restoring operation. I did this and it worked for a couple of years or so. Otherwise plan on cutting the case and soldering new wires inside. I finally did that to mine and it now works flawlessly. Enjoy your car and remember, repairs are a labor of love.

The strongest point on this car is handling and the performance. The design is actually the poorest approach an engineer can take to produce a machine that they claim to be the very best. I assure you that a racing car such as Ferrari, McLaren, Koenigsegg first take a look at the actual design for the engine and they also take an approach to ergonomics so as to make sure the driver takes priority and comfort to driving. They also make sure the design make sense, This goes back to the C4 from 1984 when air bags first were in legislation to become a law. Thus we have the break fox in the C4. Poor approach to half ass fix the dash, pyt an airbag and make it look like something that does not belong in the car.

The targa top is great. A hard top and convertible feel in one car. Get the aftermarket kit that allows the rear glass to be raised about 2 inches. It lets the wind flow through the car and eliminates that buffeting you would get otherwise. At home I use a battery powered drill to remove and install the top. Start the bolts by hand first so you don't cross thread them.

Bart Pangilinan is correct on the battery removal. You only have to disconnect the cruise control and brace, and the battery will lift out at a semi vertical angle. Very easy and quickly done. Nice looking Machine in your garage. Love the color, and it has a nice interior. I Hope to renew my '86's interior next year. Its 35 years old and today it runs better than new with 192,000 miles. The engine and th700 transmission has never been cracked open. It had 77k miles when I bought it in 2001. The important thing to realize with this machine is regular quality maintainence and lubes. Don't ignore having a full transmission service done every 3 to 4 years. I love my automatic. Its flawless. It Carries me to that magic number of a Buck-Fifty whenever the time and place is right. Keep on with producing the great videos. Wishing you success.

My mother bought a brand new 1985 C4 Corvette Candy Apple Red & only drives it in the spring & summer months & it's garage kept the rest of the time. My mother just turned 80 years old so she no-longer drives it bc it's hard for her getting in & out, so she gave it to me & it only has 78,500 miles on it. She had the dealer repaint it about 10 years ago, so it still looks brand new. All the time she's owned it, she's never rode with the top off. So when I drove it to my Prom years ago of course I removed to top & that was her 1st time seeing it like that. In 2023, that Vette is 38 years old & I get a lot of looks when I'm out driving it. I wish I could show puctures on here bc you guys wouldn't believe how good it looks 👀

Mine's a 1992 convertible. Agree with the egress in/out of the car: you 'fall in, climb out'. Fortunately mine has the redesigned dash so that 'dash pad' on the passenger side is not an issue. Two other 'quirks': the power antenna mechanism often fails on C4's: mine did but it's stuck with the antenna halfway up so the radio still works fine so I don't worry about it. Also mine has the LT1 engine and I've read that the water pump location near the 'opti spark' unit could be a problem should the water pump start leaking: carefully watching for signs of water pump leakage. The ride control on mine doesn't work either; permanently stuck on the 'tour' setting which is fine with me. All these issues are addressable and I plan to have fixed at some point in time; mine has a little over 59,000 miles on the odometer and a lot of life left in her. Love my C4: perfectly tractable at normal highway speeds and more than enough power for me. When the C8's came out I was tempted, but I love the C4 styling and decided to keep mine and keep her in good shape.

Just sold my 96 a few months ago. I owned it for about 12 years and only had 1 problem, antilock brake controller/ traction control device failed. It is not available anywhere except as a used part. That particular unit was only used in 95 and 96, and was hard to find. Local Corvette dealer wanted $3000 to replaced it with used part. I was able to find a wrecked 95 Vette and buy the part for $300 and take about 2 hours labor to replace it. If you have a Vette, you better learn to do the work yourself, the dealers will kill you on service. Otherwise, it was a great car, good economy, good handling, few problems.

Funny tidbit on the targa top. That's the reason there was no 1983 Corvette. GM couldn't make the targa top work right in time for the '83 model year. If the top was out, the car had to be parked on a perfectly level surface to be able to re-install the top.

  • @eaglerider94
    @eaglerider944 жыл бұрын

High frame rails were installed to stiffen up the suspension because the original plan was to produce a T-Top corvette (as in the Firebird) for torsional rigidity. I believe it was GM's CEO at the time which insisted on a Targa design at the last minute (after the C4 was fully designed) to compete with the Porsche 911's. Despite kickback from the engineers, the decision was overwritten. I own a 6 spd '94 and I can feel the front ends dance, especially when the top is removed. Such a bummer because this flaw placed a big limitation on it's handling. IMO, a true sports car (performance) should always be a hardtop.

The biggest quirk was the Doug Nash 4+3 overdrive unit in early C4s. Mine was an '85. They all blew up. My first one let go at 40k miles. And nobody could fix it. Doug Nash went out of business. Also "Targa" is a registered trademark of Porsche. Chevrolet never uses that word. The other quirk I remember was the first to fourth lockout if you were not going fast enough. Everybody bought the bypass kit for that. I had a '92 and the optispark distributor would get wet if you drove in the rain. You had to remove the water pump to get to it. I went through a couple of those. What a pain. I also fried the computer on that one. But they were really BIG fun to drive.

One other thing is the stupid opti-spark ignition behind the water pump on 90 and up (what were they thinking ???) .I have a C4 5 and 6 the C4 is just too good for me to sell for what they are going for.

I leave the bottom screw in but, only loosen it enough to slide the cover out. It's really is easy. I found a receipt for a new DieHard battery from Sears in the paperwork for my '90 convertible. They charged the first owner (I'm the third) an extra $50 for "installation difficulties." Apparently, they forcibly pulled the battery out and ended up breaking the bracket that holds the computer so that it was just held there by its own weight. I picked one up from an owner on CorvetteForum and replaced it myself. NOW, IF SOMEONE HAD JUST READ THE OWNER'S MANUAL....

The roof on coupes are semi structural. The roof coming off was a last minute design, and it is needed as a brace for performance body stiffness. That is why it is bolted and not clipped. Roof on or off doesn’t damage the car even on nasty pot holes. But the uneasy feeling of the body twisting a lot more can be a deterrent. X braces were put on the convertibles. Lowering the ground clearance by an (significant) inch as they attached below the exhaust. Remedied by the convertibles being raised. After, I believe, 85 the coupes would have the ability for install minus a couple holes in the rear for ease of manufacturing. A slightly less obtrusive way would be the No Flex Frame, still readily purchasable today. These would run along the rockers and not lower the car. Same effect, only down side is jacking up and placing a jack becomes a process, not hard just inconvenient. I am all too aware but still love it.
