Exellent tutorial, I found out the spare tire tub also smells because of the dirt etc. I took the whole tub and spare out. If you polish the aluminum that is exposed your C4 looks awesome while following it!

I don't own a C4, never will..But this was awesome. Well done GM, this is engineering done right. Good stuff.

The retainer bolt has two level settings, too. You can see yours at the top setting with the license plate removed, but in addition to lowering the carrier at the front, pull the bolt toward the rear of the car and let it fall to the lower setting for your big 275 tire to fit. If your carrier is sitting too low, you may need to loosen that bolt significantly, then push it up till it rests on the upper notch before tightening it again. Also note that some C4's have a light in this area to help you with all of this in the dark. I think it comes on with the interior lights.

Man you're on point here. One of my big questions about this car was involving the spare. Kind of figured it out by looking at photos etc. (I don't have a C4 yet) but you took solving any mysteries/questions about the spare all the way! Thanks. Love all your videos about this car, and the color of it is unreal, too.

Possibly the most useful tip in this video is to read the owner's manual! I read my '84's and '92's manuals the days I bought them. Saved me from replacing the windshield washer pump! ;-) Seriously, good advice here. Thx.

I have a red '89 and i got mine around the time you did and have followed since! I just did the same thing about a month ago and decided to remove the spare despite the crash protection. My reasoning is 1) I don't trust using a spare from '88 (mine was produced in 88 anyway), tires aren't good forever even if they are never used 2) weight reduction. Either way keep up the videos!

I have a C3 Corvette and just recently bought a C4…I am finding it interesting how many things about the the C4 are similar to the C3 just updated in features/functionality a bit. Like this spare tire setup and the headlight switch gear & setup…just interesting to me that though the C4 is a completely new design and engineered vehicle that it is kind of an evolution of the C3 as well…and that’s to be expected but I didn’t truly realize it until now.

Thanks. My spare tire is sitting too low now, and I think that the retaining bolt has become dislodged. Now I know to remove the license plate to check that...my '94 "Brickyard 400" C4 came with run flats, but I still have a temp spare...

just a note, the handle end of the lug wrench has a tab which fits in the slot just behind where the bolt you loosened to lower the tub. after lowering the back of the tub put the tab in the slot and use the lug wrench as additional leverage to lower and raise the tub. Raise slightly and pull bolt away and lower to ground. Makes a big difference when raising the full size tire after installing the spare.

Another video I watched recently about the C4, the guy said there was supposed to be a sleeve to put the flat tire in and some straps. You put it in the sleeve then put it in the cargo area. There are supposed to be four hooks for the straps to hold the tire down. This may not be for all years or all models. It may even be the ZR1 only since they have wider wheels. You should check the date of manufacture of that spare tire. You are not supposed to let them go over 5 years if I remember correctly. I doubt anyone ever checks that.

Yes! The hangers/brackets are just mounted to the frame and can be removed.

You could mount a rear diffuser on the bottom of that spare tire holder.

Just bought one and was freaking out that it didn’t have space for a spare tire lol

I actually just removed the the whole entire spare tire kit! The donut tire is outdated, I figure that's why I have Roadside Assistance

Where can I find my center cap lock?

I remove mine once a year just to clean out all the dirt, last time I put the spare back in I wrapped everything in a heavy duty trash bag.

I had a spare tire on my 1995 Corvette that was never used since I bought the car July 12, 1995. Two years ago when I removed the spare tire it was flat had a permanent impression of the area it was stowed. That time was useless. It cost me over $200.00, maybe $275.00 or so for a new tire. They are special and the new one didn't want to go into the old ones spot even thought it was exactly the same size tire. Beware.

A real corvette owner Does not, change his own tires, he hires others. And does not tip

It's amazing that you are still alive after putting air in a 31 year old space saver spare...... they can explode and kill you instantly. The spare in my Dad's 2001 Lesabre exploded inside his trunk in 2017 just sitting there. Folks.....do not air up one of these old tires if you want to live to be old.

Brother! You need to clean the underside of the spare carrier.

Make sure you check your spare every two years of so.

And! Your car was the last of front to back rotation.

First thing I threw in the bin, that awful holder. It is just a dirt catcher and heavy. Ditch it. Just have good tyre tread, never had a flat in over 20 years.

)-; It's SO much dirtier than I remember my 89' Black Sapphire Metallic convertible.

I have a Z51 C7 they don't have spare tires it has run flat tires I would prefer to have a real spare

Just call a flatbed.

Last year you could rotate front to back.

Dont need a spare, toss all that crap. Wasted extra weight, 20 lbs of stuff you dont need, save the weight.

C4s have a spare tire? Wow. C4 owners are so spoiled, and maybe a little wimpy. Real Corvette owners eschew spare tires because there is NO ROOM FOR A SPARE in any modern Corvette and owners of newer Corvettes are thus more capable drivers because they risk being hopelessly stranded every time we get behind the wheel. Spare tires are so bourgeois. Real men carry Fix-A-Flat.
