As a young single private, I usually asked my squad leader for rides to get to formation and asked to borrow cars for personal use. But yeah eventually wanted to get a car and stop relying on others. Very important point you made though is if you do buy a car get a car you CAN afford. Bring your squad leader if you can.

tbh your first car in the army should be a beater that you bought second hand. Trust me.
A time machine. To go back and get lost on the way to the recruiting office.
During my time in the Army (1982-1985): Cell phones: Basically didn't exist, nor did the internet. Car: Bought my room mate's 1970 El Camino SS. Should have kept that car! It helped during ETS time. Sold it to another soldier just before I left. Utility tool/knife: Never really needed one. I was a mechanic. Had a full toolbox. Pen and notepad: Never needed one. If you had a pen, it had to be hidden/concealed from plain view. Some soldiers put it in their pen slot of the left breast pocket and called it the "Good Penmanship Award." Watch: Most guys that wore watches had the Army type watch band. It looked like a wrist band and had a velcro flap to cover the face of the watch. It was usually green in color.

When stationed at any of my posts (Alaska, Germany, multiple stateside) I always had a Gerber, a Swiss Army Champion, a Combat/Camp knife, a Casio Ironman digital watch, and when I was in the early 90's, a personal computer. All these made me very popular in my units since I was always on time with the right tool when someone needed it in the field. Most of the senior NCO's in my unit even borrowed my knives or tools when they needed them in the field. The computer at the time was popular since in the early 90's they were expensive and rare for most all people, so I had a lot of fellow soldiers use it to type up letters home, play video games or such. :-)
Thanks Christopher! You had some energy on this video. Love it!

For Infantry: create your own weapons cleaning kit. A set of dental picks, at least two bore snakes (one for 5.56 and one for 7.62), CLP, lint free rags, Gerber or SOG, or Leatherman multi-tools whichever you prefer, toothbrushes, small wire brushes, Q-tips(lots of them) and a shaving lather brush made from horse hair (it helps to remove the bulk of dirt, mud, and dust from a weapon after you have been out in the field for a while. Plus, horse hair is soft enough to not remove the blueing from the exterior of the weapon, which I have seen happen when using regular hard plastic bristle hair brushes.
A DD214 is a must have 😂😂

Saw this video for first time today. And before it started I was like, I wonder if Gerber/multi-tool will be on his list. I know almost every single person in company had one, whether they worked in "working" platoons or in the HQ platoon, the had a multitool. This is back 1992-1994. I enjoy your videos, keep them coming. I know I am Johnny come lately on this one.
When our son went to Basic in 1995 at Ft. Benning Georgia. He left the house with one pair of underwear in his pocket nothing more. He knew he would have to carry everything he would haul there and everything they issued to him for at least a few hours. This way he would have less to carry he even tossed the extra skivvies so he didn't have to carry them around!
Thanks for another great video, I love the information.

I like your channel you’re honest about the day-to-day
In 2006, in Bavaria, cell phones were part of our uniforms. Our squad leaders checked if they are charged.
Back in the 70's 80's and 90's if you lived in the barracks you were not allowed to get phone service and all you had was a pay phone. Cell phones were not a thing at that time and very expensive even if you could get one, boy life was hard!
That was a pretty slick segway.
Pierce transit and Joint Base Lewis McChord do have some services which operate both on and off post. They serve two major transit centers in south pierce county as well as six stops on post. All riders must have access cards to the post, and regular pierce transit fare is accepted which can transfer to other services off post. Bad side is it operates Monday through Friday only, and in the mornings and afternoon windows only. No federal holidays either. Which is a lot more exhaustive than most transit holidays here which is usually just the six major holidays.
Thats funny that you mentioned needing a Gerber because when I was in they issued one at my duty station with my tool box.
For Basic: I didn't get a phone call until after the forge. In AIT, we have our phones and we're just not allowed to take them to school. Same for Smart Watches
thanks Chris
Another important thing about cell phone is if you have a car you can use it as a GPS to get to work especially if your mos is pretty demanding such as firefighter infratry MP etc
in my MOS, we had to have a brief case. There'd be the whole platoon marching to work swinging our briefcases.
A big one that was missed in the video.... photo copies of paperwork. Get any paper that you are allowed to, and you think is important, photocopied. And a good “lock box” or similar case for storage of said copies/ original documents . Oh, and do not lose your SS card and military ID at the same time. I have not done it personally, but you literally cannot get a new one without the other. Same applies to CAC cards.
my "must haves"green notebook and pens!! ,location of class 6 store, supply section ppl, motor pool ppl, etc........
Great video
I got out in ‘96. Love watching these videos to see how Army life has changed over the years. Not sure I would enjoy the whole cell phone thing and constant/easy contact by command staff. Lol!

What are the options for getting a driver's license once enlisted for active duty?
Back in the 60s, we marched to the motor pool in a formation.
I would say to always have 1 rank up from the rank you are readily available to you under your velcro collar so that you are ready to be pinned the next rank at all times!
Cell phone is 100% a must have. In the Army, you can count on on hand the few things that AREN'T subject to change literally 30 minutes prior and it's hard to somehow come across that info without a phone. I've gone to sleep a few times, woke up for PT and the uniform changes, or the location changes, as for watches, I 100% agree, but instead of a smart watch, invest in a Garmin Instinct Tactical. It can take the abuse of a grunt's life, and you still get notifications, you can reply, plus other health monitoring widgets on it. Plus the battery lasts 28 days.

Looking back, I should have bought a 10 speed bike. Don't have to bother with registering it with the MPs, sholdn't be too hard to sell if you change duty stations.
What about regular watches? I have a luminox navy seal dive watch, all black. Not digital though. Would that be acceptable?
Schofield barracks in hawaii has a public city bus that runs through the base.
In the enlistment process after BCT and AIT if I get stationed over seas in Germany or Korea did we bring our own vehicle and do they hold us to their standards of vehicle inspections? I’ve got a truck with super dark tinted windows would I have a problem?
and how about no video allowed on base,coz some says it's prohibited and all videos have been keept in manbij syria.say,only military computer and a telephone they communicte with family.whta do you think about that, cellphone is very important
Number 1 should be the Woobie lol
Remember to keep it high speed.
Great video but you beat the Uber idea to death. When I was in a notebook and a pen was SOP. I'd say if you are worried about a smart watch dying or breaking your digital watch go old school and get the iconic analog military watch. They have concealable wristbands with velcro covers to avoid giving away your position when in the field or down range. Just a few words from an old soldier.
@aadipattanaik7778

Good advice but wouldn’t an analog put you at a disadvantage from everyone else?
@ScottyM1959
3 жыл бұрын
@@aadipattanaik7778 well we are talking about a watch right? So, how does that put you at a disadvantage? I mean yeah it would be cool to have that stop watch function and alarms which can get you dead if you forget to disable them, and why do you need a watch that can tell you what time it is in Prague or Hong Kong? Your first phone call back home after arriving at a new duty station or overseas should help you orient your time in your head for future calls home. For example, if you are from the east coast and you get stationed in California you should know its a 3 hour difference or a 5 hour difference between London and the east coast. So you can be just as informed as the next guy if you think about it. Before all this new technology arrived people still got to work on time, remembered time differences, knew how to do simple math (addition subtraction, multiplication and division) in their heads or a notebook, mostly just in their heads. Just for a reference I served from 80 - 84

Do you have a specific brand of “analog military watch” you’re talking about? My son is joining and I’d like to get him a decent watch, before he leaves.
@ScottyM1959
22 күн бұрын
@aadipattanaik7778 if it's your first watch going in or if you're planning on going to Ranger School they won't let you have a watch with GPS or a digital compass on it last I heard. So, alarms can get you killed outside the wire so what can a digital phone do for you that an analog cant?
These are relatively right, give or take. Most units don't issue Gerbers or knockoffs of Gerbers but it does happen albeit rarely. Pen and paper has become optional with the advent of notepad apps on phones but still a good idea all the same. Cars are just a good idea regardless. Same with phones. Watches are good but not an absolute must.
The Sheppard air Force Base has a public bus that goes on and off base
I know JBLM has a shuttle bus service that goes from on and off base.
Analog watch. Because you can use it to navigate.
I’m 21 I’m already loaded with tats and had all the nice cars I could want. Enlisting this week.
G-shock watch, Pens, phone, notepad, boot blousers if you can't keep em tucked in. All that + infamous blue electric razor in the field.
I literally bought the watch in the thumbnail to take to basic xD
