As far as hurry up and wait goes, one thing that drove me nuts was the "Get there 10 minutes early" unwritten rule. It would be fine if it ended there, but with each level of the chain of command that the formation time had to filter down, another 10 minutes were removed from the formation time, so by the time word got to the troops they were there at least an hour early.

You people out there with civilian jobs don't like having 1 or 2 bosses? In the Army , you have THOUSANDS of bosses. Think about that. Everyone who outranks you is your boss. Even if you just ran into them for the 1st time in your life 2 seconds ago and you don't know them from adam. And what they tell you to do isn't optional. Even giving them a dirty look can get you written up.

Not if you don't fall directly under them and what they tell you to do contradicts an order you've already been given. Some sergeant from another unit can't come to me on the street and start barking orders like I belong to them. It doesn't work that way.

Still, love your content, Chaos... keep it up. Follow up: who is the fool who doesn't understand that military service is 24/7/365? I recall many a time - on shore duty - running certain exercises for, say 72 - 96 hours straight. I also recall very well on reporting back to my leadership in garrison and being told "get outta here, I don't want to see you until x"... usually something like 2 days later.

That's an interesting point about partial derivatives Chris! Back when I was studying Stackelberg v. Cournot model of duopoly competition, part of the equation was quite similar! Makes me wonder though, if II² is unknown, would you set it to 0 so now you have 0 = [dP(q¹+q²)/dq²] * q² to solve for q first? (Please note that q¹ and q² are meant to be subscripts, not exponents but I can't figure out to do that on my phone!)

We didn't leave until 0930 because S3 didn't get clearance from the German government authorizing us to convoy and they had to wait for the Germans to get to their office (Germans don't start early and love their time off).

Hurry up is the #1 most hated for me. Coming in from the field at 9pm “Hurry up, hurry up we’ve got to get this equipment turned in!” Nobody can go home until the whole division has all equipment present and accounted for. Your thinking about seeing your kids, your wife, tipping up a beer, whatever. But the last person in some company you never even heard of doesn’t turn in his equipment (maybe he had lost it and went back to get it, I don’t know). You end up waiting until almost 3 in the morning for the last piece of equipment to be accounted for, no fault of your own, before you can go home. Only in the military!

They called my mom and she gave them a 180 mile stretch of the Appalachian Trail, which I was on. This was in the earliest of cellphone days so I didn’t carry one. Everything goes was fine, but when I came off of leave I was overseas the next day. A HUGE plus one Special Forces was that hurry up and wait was at a bare minimum but it still did happen.

The furthest I got was when I took the practice ASVAB and the qualifier test to see if I was eligible for the Army (I scored high enough to join any branch btw) and the internet connection was behaving by itself for a few minutes, but nothing compared to when I took the real thing at MEPS. Oh my god, it was worse. The internet connection turned off a few times there and I think the test was longer than usual. Then me and another guy who went with us to MEPS had to wait another 2.5 hours because there were six of us total, one was going to the hotel before getting shipped, the other left and we were waiting on the third person. Then a sergeant came by to drive us back to the office. We left for the test at 10, got there at 12, finished the test at 3 and got back at 7 PM. Hurry up and wait can teach you to be patient but it will drive you up the wall in a car with no brakes, and you don't even need to be in the Army to get a slice of it.

Lol. I got my DD214 during basic combat training at fort Jack-ass-son. Hated how the army treats you like shit. And I was a 38 year old guy at basic training. I also had back problems and could not do the sprint drag shit for the ACFT test. I also did not partake in the final "Forge". Ended up being a chapter 11 and left basic training before graduation. I smelled the army life bullshit weeks before graduation. And I was going for army national guard.

You technically can quit. There’s several ways to get out early. Fail PT twice, fail UA (drug test), mental health (suicide, schizophrenia, depression, etc.), get pregnant (enlisted females only), complain of injury that can’t be denied (back pain, bad knees, arthritis). You’re not stuck, don’t let anyone in your command tell you that.

Nothing is more hilarious than seeing a private regret his life choice in the army and desperately try to find some loophole to get out of the army without getting arrested or dishonorably discharged. Of course I would tell them that the best way out is through.. but they always try to find some way to quit and the schemes are cartoonish at times.
