Well normally it falls in sync with your stroke rate so one breath per stroke as you start to ramp up the intensity you can elevate to 2 breathes per stroke and during the hyrox race your breathing rate is likely high going into the row. So you may be breathing two breathes per stroke at a low stroke rate to begin with but try to bring it down to one breath per stroke and you will recover more for the next part of the race. However you chose to breathe, consistency is key if you can settle into a rhythm your heart rate will settle at the required intensity.

@@woodsyworkout I hear you. Maybe this sounds silly, but I’ve experimented with breathing in on the the pull (going back), as well as the gather (going fwd). Also, breathing in on a slight pause at the back end. Breathing in is difficult on the gather as you’re compressing your torso, but also difficult on the pull as, as you are exerting so much and stiffening your upper body. For this reason, I’ve tried a little bit of reading in right at the end of my pull as I release my arms, but before I’ve begun to reach forward. i’m not sure it’s ideal but again I can’t find comfort.
