Stroke rate is super important too. High spm might feel fast, but it’s a sure way to completely gas out! Another test. Try 1000m at 30spm, then another at 20spm. The difference might surprise you…

Yeah very true testing the same power at different stroke rates can help find what feels best for you.

@ScottishJassman This is of course correct, but you must also consider that the goal should be to keep the air wheel moving. I.e. if the stroke rate is too low and the wheel brakes too much before the next pull, you have to re-accelerate every time, which costs unnecessary power and slows down your split time. Therefore, the stroke rate must always be considered in connection with the drag factor, i.e. low drag factor (low damper) higher stroke rate, high drag factor lower stroke rate, because with higher drag factor (damper) the wheel does not lose momentum as quickly. A high drag factor and lower stroke rate therefore requires more power to achieve the same performance as a low drag factor and higher stroke rate, as less power is required here, but more travel, as also explained in the video. If you can afford it, you will of course choose a higher drag factor and a high number of strokes ;-). At some point, however, it no longer makes sense to increase the number of strokes, as the revolutions of the wheel cannot be increased over a certain point (especially at a low damper setting) i.e. from then on you are only wasting movement, but no longer accelerating the wheel and therefore not bringing your split time down any further. As for the comparison with the stairs, another way to look at it is to imagine you are riding your bike on a straight and absolutely flat track and can use your gears. So, in order to cover a certain distance, for example 1km in a certain time, you can either choose a low gear and do more revolutions per minute, or you can choose a high gear and do less revolutions per minute, but each revolution costs more power. Of course, this also applies to the rowing machine.

So is the new ski-erg machine (in the hyrox arena) gonna feel harder or easier than the old dusty one in a gym?

New clean machines will have a higher drag factor so will feel harder than a dusty machine at the same damper. So you might want to put the damper down a bit in a Hyrox race or up a bit in training if you know your machine has a poor drag factor.

I use my legs a lot - Almost like sitting down or a hip hinge during the pull. But, I'm a beginner, probably with poor technique!!!

Use a rower to practice pace and build your cardio. Medball slams and chin ups help build your power as well
