I agree, it really looks like the beginning of a new thing. Green Lantern and Green Lantern Corps during Johns run was easily the best thing around, from any publisher.

Hal is my lantern. I was coming into comics at emerald twilight so although Kyle Rainer was coming in I had to read back on his story to catch up.

The Green lantern rebirth helped with DC sales immensely. It was a great story. Not liking Hal Jordan is sad reason for not liking his Resurrection.

of course sales would go up immensely. that happens to any character when you would kill them for more than 4 or 5 years only to bring them back later would shoot up the comic book sales. doesn’t mean the resurrection is still good though

Best DC Resurrection is Red Hood Lost days. It perfectly shows the trauma that would come with what happened to Jason, and doesn't skip over the replacement arc like Under the Red Hood.

8:56 The Death of Superman was a prelude to the awesome Reign of the Supermen. He didn't come back in 2 months. DC cancelled Superman titles for more than 3 months. Then 4 alternative Superman fought for the mantle for the better part of a year while Superman's subtle and complex resurrection slowly manifested. The epic story introduced several long standing characters and moved Superman's story forward on many levels. The mistake that is often made is that The Death of Superman was a cash grab. It was a prelude to a long and interesting story - that sold millions. It would have gone ahead even if it wasn't popular. Superman wasn't meant to stay dead.

I don't think it's even possible to get trades that imply that things happened that quickly. I suppose if you weren't there at the time it's easy to be jaded and think it ran over a few weeks.

@@incredibleflameboy Yeah, they really milked it. Superman was gone for months and the other comics felt and mourned his absence.

Gotta disagree with Reign of the Supermen. DC did that one perfectly. They killed Superman because fans took him for granted. Then they did the Funeral and World Without Superman for a couple of months. THEN, they cancelled all of the Superman books. People were literally crying! After that, the Reign began and people were arguing over which Superman was the real one (I thought it was Cyborg Superman, personally). In the end, it gave us a world destroying threat, showed that Superman was still a hero even without his powers, and showed us that nobody could take his place. Job well done, no matter what that Max Landis video would have you believe.

I think if they ever make a video game based on reign of the superman my supermen would be lex ultimate human wants to fix the world never gives up . Bizaro failed clone wants to be like superman, Manchester black a superman with no restriant or respect for the rules. And jimmy olson all of supermans morals but non of his skills. Actually they killed off Superman because they wanted to marry off Lois and Clark but ABC liked that idea and the creative team was strong armed into putting it off for a year. They just told the public it was because they were running out of original ideas for him and low sales or something like that.

Steel was doing a fine job replacing him. Kal-El wasn't necessary in the slightest.

Superman didn't come back "a few months later". Superman dying was groundbreaking in that he was one of the only characters of that caliber that stayed dead for around a year.

Batman: Under the Red Hood is my favorite animated comic book movie.

This is all wrong. I'd make Barry and Hal exchange places. Bringing Barry Allen was one of DC's greatest mistakes. It ruined not only his sacrifice but Wally's story too. And they still haven't made Barry stories on the level of those of Wally to justify his return. Meanwhile, what they did with Hal was pretty cruel to the character and he deserved a chance at redemption. His return ushered into one of the greatest comic runs of all time.

So the whole decision of why Hal coming back was bad is because a lot of fans liked it but you didn't? How is that a genuine reason? If a lot of fans liked something, then it is not bad.

I always like your videos because your arguments are more than often valid. But that dont mean I agree with everything. I think Green Lantern Rebirth is one of the best comics I ever red... I understand your statement but It is what every green lantern fan is looking for : epic, epic and epic. I thought that the first 4 volumes of Red Hood & the outlaws (new 52) were really great, we got really deeper with the character... but I know how you feel about the new 52's in general. However, I totally agree with Martian Manhunter's. In fact, I think all resurrections in brightest day are brought up just with a snap, without any satisfying explanation. (Sorry for my english)

the new 52 were coming there was no time or interest in extending the story to make brightest day more readable.

I actually liked the whole Superboy-Prime-fractures-the-reality thing for Jason Todd. It's such a comicbook thing it's impossible not to love it.

Jason came back because Superboy Prime punched reality. This caused the two possibly outcomes of the events of "A Death in the Family" two swap, causing a living Todd to replace his corpse. Jason then SOMEHOW...with all his broken bones and such...break the coffin and dig his way out. But it gets better! Following this, Jason was a total nutcase. Far from being the badass anti-hero he is now, he would do things like dress as Nightwing and murder criminals with a kris dagger. And when Bruce died, he tried to become Batman, nearly killing Tim Drake and going on a murder spree. He belonged in Arkham.

Hal Jordan's Lantern is one of the greatest DC characters. This video is full of prejudice. The title of this video should have "IN MY FUCKING OPINION....."

Just want to let you know The Death and return of Wolverine is one of the worst in comic book history.

Not agreeing on Death of Superman. It was a masterpiece. Loved it, and Reign of Supermen did bring alot of new characters into the storys to come.

i dont like hal jordan much either but his resurrection was handled much better than barry allens, Barry had no character aside from being The Flash when he died so them bringing him back had to retcon so much dumb things to make him an interesting character that it sucked

It was a bad resurrection because it made no sense at all. The only reason he seemed to be brought back was so DC could say, "What? No, Hal wasn't evil! He...uh...he had a giant fear bug possessing him! Yeah! So we can all forgive his destruction of the Green Lantern Corp now, right?" No. It doesn't work that way. Turning Hal into Parallax was a bad idea from the start and making it a separate entity doesn't erase that fact.

@@Bluesit32 you're looking at the parallax retcon in a bubble. Looking at the whole scope of John's run on the books and that change was the first step toward the Sinestro Corp War and Blackest Night which were both phenomenal in my opinion.

Death of Superman and the reign of the Supermen comic books suck their animated movies are better ones from last year and this year

Green Lantern rebirth is up there with the all time great DC comics. Johns does an amazing job balancing it all out and redeeming Hal for all the evil he committed. I don’t think that his resurrection was that bad, but I guess compared to some other stories it wasn’t as huge. Still I absolutely loved it.

The current run of Jason Todd as 'Red Hood Outlaw' starting in Red Hood and the Outlaws (v.2) 25 from October 2018 to now is bleedin' awesome, and is a great character/story arc. He also had a good run during Scott Snyder's Death of the Family during The New 52.

Hal's resurrection was better than Bruce's. The time stream stuff was a copout.

Well at least Kevin Smith didn't make Green Arrow PISS HIS GODDAMN PANTS. I will never forgive you for that, Kevin. I cannot tell you the amount of confusion and anger 17 yr old me felt reading Batman talking about pissing his pants out of fear

Geoff Johns is the name you're looking for not Geoff Johnston. The same guy that wrote the Arkham games but never gets pulled up for his overuse of the Joker. Can't see why Hal Jordan gets put down so much. In regards to blackest night we got reminded of a lot of dead characters on the lead up because it was kind of the point that the dead came back.

I like how you guys emphasized on Jason Todd’s resurrection from “Under The Red Hood”, rather than the comics. It’s funny how The Bat family got all spots 1, 2 & 3

One aspect of BLACKEST NIGHT was the resurrection of the Reverse-Flash and Maxwell Lord just to exonerate the Flash and Wonder Woman, respectively, of their killings!

With Reverse Flash it was just to explain why Reverse Flash was already alive again. Remember, the Black Lantern Thawne was beaten by bringing him to the living one, causing the ring to go nuts as it couldn't handle the host being both dead and alive at the same time.

Hal Jordon will always be the best of the Green Lanterns. Everyone else is just second tier.

Yea Under The red Hood is 1 of my favorite animated movies.

Red hood and the outlaws had an amazing fucking run as of late. I don't know if you just didn't read it or have very different prefences, but it flushed out Jasons character and his decisions very well. Even in detective comics when the bat family was discussing batwomans decision to kill clayface, Jason brings up tremendously valid points that further validates his contrasting ideals to batman. Just give him a shot. For anyone who wants to read up on it, the issue is Detective comics #975

You want a great example of how death in comic books is such a non-event? Green Arrow in both Injustice games. Yeah, I know these are video games, but they're of comic book characters so I'm counting them. Anyway, not only is the Green Arrow in Injustice 1 and 2 not the Green Arrow from the Injustice universe, they're actually two different GA's from two different universes! How pointless is death in comic books when you can basically just get another one of a dead character by just plucking them out of a whole other universe like your getting more milk from the grocery store?!

Looks like a lot of people share my sentiment about Rebirth. I wasn't even a DC guy at the time, and I was making a point to read and buy that book. To me, it was that good. Want a crap rebirth...Captain Atom. THAT was crap.

There's also Buried Alien from Marvel Earth THN242.

There's nothing more insincere than the superhero funeral. Everyone all in costume, mourning the loss of a fallen comrade...until you stop and count how many of them had come back in the past. What's the point? Why bother with the expense and time of a funeral? Are they all thinking that this time it's going to stick? Ridiculous.

Sorry but The Death and Return of Superman is a revelation. His death is iconic, and the way he was brought back could be seen as a cop out but it was actually really smart. And this list isn’t about the characters moving forward, it’s just about the nature of their return. So I think that’s kind of lame that you take that into consideration for Superman’s resurrection.

Damien Wayne is a fantastic character - the Super Sons run was brilliant as was most of the Morrison stuff - but he was SO much better when he was Robin to Grayson's Batman imo. Their dynamic was brilliant.

Sat through the drudgery of the allegedly "good" revivals, waiting for just one I could actually agree with, and my reward was having you dump all over Hal Jordan returning as the greatest Green Lantern. It's you exist just to be wrong.

I mean I’m just against resurrections in general because it ruins the actual death itself. Such as Jason Todd, his death is one of the most memorable moments in DC. Resurrecting him made the death just... useless? The emotional trial of his death doesn’t mean much of anything anymore when he’s bouncing around again. Edit: also, most resurrections are done because “I want this character back now” instead of their death and resurrection being planned since the creation of the character. DC has dozens of writers, not all the writers corroborate so a writer can kill a character uncalled for and another writer would want them back so they do. A lot of the time, it’s normally not smooth...

I loved pretty much everything I read from Rebirth

This is one of the worst lists this channel has produced. Not only is the Return of Superman a classic and far, far from being one of the worst resurrections, but the video doesn't even explain the Green Arrow resurrection. Furthermore, it seems that no one at Whatculture knows a damn thing about Stephanie Brown. She was created 12 years before War Games, and her father played no part in that god-awful story. Furthermore, as the way she was killed off was so horrible in the first place the retcon by which she was brought back was necessary to redeem several other characters, plus it led to her awesome Batgirl series.

From my experience, the people of WhatCulture Comics seem to have very little actual interest in comics. Most of their output is videos labelled "10 Things (Insert publisher here) Wants You To Forget About (Insert character here)" that are really just them stating random parts of their Wikis and calling them dumb regardless of fan perception or even just straight up logic. My favourite example: one of the top 10 things they said that Marvel wants you to forget about The Thing from the Fantastic Four is apparently his various outfits over the years. And what did Marvel end up releasing on their official channel not long after? A comprehensive look back at the Fantastic Four's outfits over the years including literally every example WhatCulture mentioned in their list.

I honestly don't think Green Lantern: Rebirth was that bad, but then again, Hal IS my favorite GL closely followed by Kyle Rayner. And I don't think that Barry's ressurection was good at all, Hal and Barry should be switched on your list.

Why was manhunters revival the only one talked about for darkest night/brightest day what about literally everyone else that was revived for that event

He chastises himself for it in the film he's angry he didnt realize the switch had happened, Ra's had his people do it in secret away from Bruce, and while Bruce is beating himself up over it Alfred tries to calm him down and tell him he was to grief striken to look at the body after you know picking up his adopted sons corpse and holding it immediately after he was killed

Barry Allen's resurrection on the best list and Hal Jordan's resurrection on the worst list? WTF! Barry showed up in Final Crisis with no rhyme or reason. That ended up explain in Geoff Johns' The Flash: Rebirth, which was, in my opinion, overly complicated and borderline nonsensical. Hal Jordan's resurrection in Geoff Johns' Green Lantern: Rebirth, I believe was beyond brilliant. Hal was brought back in a way that was easier to understand and kept his replacement, Kyle Rayner, alive and relevant.

Good times.

Screw That!!! Superman should have gotten number one "Done Right", for the Death and Life of Superman storyline overall, especially when Superman finally DOES return dropping out of a Kryptonian Battlesuit!!! Daiman Wayne at best deserves an honorable mention
