    Superman murders his wife and unborn child, and in a fit of rage, he murders the Joker. It seems the Joker's theory from The Killing Joke is right, "All it takes is one bad day".

    One of my favourites twists was in Neil Gaiman's _Sandman- Season of Mists_. Taunted by his sister-brother Desire, Morpheus decides to rescue his long lost love Nada from Hell (a fate actually given to her by the king of dreams for breaking his heart). However, a few years earlier, Dream earned the enmity of the King of Hell when he faced him down in front of all of his demons and damned. Lucifer swore that he would destroy him for that. Due to a sense of etiquette, Dream sends an envoy to Hell, in the form of Kane, who is protected by the very punishment God bestowed upon him. Upon receiving Morpheus' message, Lucifer shrieks with laughter and proclaims to all Hell that this day would be one they all remember. The King of Dreams then arrives in Hell, prepared to do battle, only to find that the infernal realm is silent, empty. Suspecting some trick, Morpheus yells for Lucifer who promptly appears and rather calmly tells Dream what has happened- He quit.

    If I'm remembering correctly (and I don't think I've reread it since it came out so maybe not) it wasn't an actual Guardian that Hal Jordan seems to squish the head of. Rather it was a green power projection of one, telling him to stop what he was doing. Rather than squishing a Guardians napper he merely stole power from the projection. It did rather go downhill for the Guardians and the Corps from there though...

  • @eversuperman

  • @TheRezro

    @TheRezro

    5 жыл бұрын

    @@DarkwyndPT Silver Age Joker was active earliest making mostly stupid stunts. He was sociopath but wasn't insane. Then impostor criminal genius (Bronze Age Joker) show up and he lost any relevance. At one point Joker attempt to create own copies and so third Joker (Dark Age Joker) and Joker Junior were created as result (and that probably was part of Court of Owl secret project anyway). That or he has split personality disorder, what would be cheap though. Harley Queen is new character introduced in DCAU. So there is not much problem with connecting her to all that. She was brainwashed by Bronze Age Joker and is most famous of many of his assistants. She generally don't distinguish them as part of her programming. Jason Todd was member of Red Hood gang, and so it was same gang controlled by Bronze Age Joker. It is also the reason why he needed to die as he was threat to Joker plans. In the outside materials it was also implied that he wasn't as much dead as was Joker Junior, before he snap from programming and become Red Hood. As for why Batman never find out anything? Well good question? Most likely answer is that primarily due to his presumed inanity. Joker was only villain Bruce never could fully understand. It is why he is his nemesis after all. That, and possibility that some third company was working in the background, so they did cover the tracks and keep eye on what other Jokers were doing. So they could pretend that they were present during those events or didn't clash with each other. That, or Joker has split personality what would be extremely cheap though. Also as side note in Gotham TV series we in fact have two Jokers in form of twin brother: Jerome and Jeremiah Valeska. Plus in Flashpoint Joker was no one else then Martha Kane (yes, Bruce mother). And even if it is alternative timeline, it is still grounded in the stuff from Earth-1. So Joker definitely wasn't one person.

    No the point of the joke is that one person is crazy enough to believe they could walk across a flashlight beam but scared that their friend would kill them by turning it off. One refuses to kill, the other is crazy enough to think they could. Batman and Joker are dark reflections of the other. Both born out of tragedy but while Batman wars on all criminals so that no 8 year old child should suffer like he has choosing not to kill since that would clash with his ideals, the Joker is who Batman could be if he chose to give into the madness of grief and sew chaos and anarky, killing being a means to an end or just fun. One knows that the song and dance will go on forever unless someone turns off the flashlight, but both know it wont.

    Jeremy Valery same rlly as soon as I read that last page I was like omg of course who didn’t I get this as the Falcone family were affecting her the most tbh. The stress was putting pressure on there marriage and she was always complaint about the Falcone’s through out the book so the only real way to have her husband back would be through killing them. Plus batman said about the gun being light and ideal fit for a woman and the baby bottle nib thing which is seen in her house as they were trying for children. Plus the holiday weapons found in Harvey’s basement is supposed to mislead and for us to think it’s either him or he got them as evidence but they actually belonged to Gilda and Harvey knew all along as he even said. “There were two holiday killers”. It’s Batman’s only unsolved case as he thought it was to do with Harvey’s obsession with two’s but he never caught Gilda Dent. She left Gotham without a trace never to be seen again and never to be found out as the new holiday killer.

    I might never forgive DC for bringing back Barry the way that they did. Not because I dislike the character -- though I always thought that he was a little bland IMHO -- but because of the way his return pushed Wally to the side, eventually leading to him and his family being erased from existence in the aftermath of Flashpoint and The New 52. It took years or hard work and good writing to get fans to accept Wally as the new Flash. To earn his place as the Flash of the DCAU. And then, to just undo it all because someone at Time Warner was having a nostalgia boner for the Silver Age versions of the Flash and Green Lantern. I know that they have brought Wally back in Rebirth, but if you've read Heroes in Crisis, they're still crapping on him.

    I don't see at all that Batman killed the Joker in "The Killing Joke". Indeed, the fact that the events of TKJ are in continuity, and yet the Joker was still alive afterwards, is kind of proof positive that Batman didn't kill him. Plus of course, how killing the Joker would not only go against everything we know about Batman, but would go against Commissioner Gordon's wishes. Basically, "Batman totally killed the Joker, dude" is a 1990s-grade fan theory that just doesn't hold up.

  • @TheRezro

    @TheRezro

    It was Silver Age joker in TKJ. At the time Batman deal mostly with either Bronze Age or Dark Age Joker. Also whole point of Killing Joke was that he did break Batman. Something what his impostors couldn't do, even if they were designed for that by Court of Owl. That is the joke.

  • @kingbeauregard

    @kingbeauregard

    5 жыл бұрын

    @@TheRezro The Joker was trying to break Commissioner Gordon. He failed: Commissioner Gordon still insisted on having the Joker taken in alive. Hell, even the illustration in the comic shows Batman holding the Joker by the shoulders, not the neck. I don't understand this drive to turn Batman into a hypocrite who goes against the explicit wishes of one of his closest friends; lord knows it's not supported in TKJ itself or the comics that deal with its aftermath.

    I would argue that yes, Killing Joke is a plot twist. Nobody was expecting Batgirl to be shot and brutalized, and for it to ultimately create lasting consequences. Remember this was the 80s, before characters got killed off or “forever changed”, then resurrected and changed back on a weekly basis. Injustice is not a plot twist. It was advertised on the premise of Evil Superman, this it did not “twist” the plot once he became so.

  • @woodgatejack

    I think it's open to interpretation. If you treat it as canonical, then of course Batman _doesn't_ kill the Joker, but I think, if you regard it as a stand-alone story, the idea that Batman kills the Joker is perfectly acceptable. Joker was trying to prove than anyone can be driven over the edge by one bad day. We as the reader are lead to believe that his target is Jim Gordon. However, it turns out that, naturally, his focus was Batman all along. Having said that, it could be also interpreted that The Joker is _wrong_. Not _everyone_ can be brought down by one bad day, as we saw in the comic- Jim Gordon wasn't and the only reason the Joker was successful driving Batman over the edge was that he was close to the edge to begin with (he is a man who experienced childhood trauma, obsesses with the Joker, and dresses as a bat, after all) Throughout his comic writing Moore has examined and deconstructed the idea of the super-hero. In this very list he dismantled Swamp Thing and numerous super-hero tropes in _Watchmen_ and has gone on to do so in his more recent work, so the idea of him having Batman finally cave in to his id is totally in keeping for Moore.

    Really did take away all that was special about the Flash mythos. Well, that ball started rolling when Didio made Johns force Wally out prematurely for Bart. Up to then, the Flash was the one super hero comic with a true sense of progression, always felt like it'd move to the next generation. Then Bart didn't work out because it really wasn't his time yet, and Wally had to come back, and then they brought Barry back, and then it was just every other super hero comic again. Died the best hero death in comic book history, one that actually mattered for decades, and it's all undone.
