5.9L Ram Cummins Turbo Diesel Teardown Part 1! Ope, I Found A Problem Already!
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
If you haven't seen my other blown up and bad engine teardown videos, the playlist is here. • Blown Up Engine Tear D...
My name is Eric and I own and run a full service specialty salvage operation in Saint Louis, MO. We specialize in niche markets and part of our model includes selling engine parts from bad or blown up engines. These engines rarely come with a story, mileage, or any clues as to what we'll find inside. Join me as I tear into each one and try to unwrap the mystery of why its been removed from its home.
Today's engine is a 5.9L Commonrail 24valve Cummins from a 2004 Dodge Ram 2500 with an Automatic Trans. This engine came to use complete, with the turbo and pump. This is part 1, and we're pulling all of the external components, and the cylinder head. Later this week, I'll upload part 2 where to dig into the bottom end.
If you'd like to buy parts from this engine or others I've torn down, shoot us an email at Importapartsales@Gmail.com
Thanks for watching!

The knock that engine produced when it was running would’ve been horrific!
I want the high speed sound your impact makes to be a sound effect for a gun in a video game.

Nice jersey, but you reminded me of a 2000s Adam Sandler. Thanks for your videos, they're really good.

I drove a work truck way back that had the 5.9 Cummins. It was a 2006 Ford F-650, YES with a Cummins. It didn't leak or use oil between changes. At 331,000 miles they sold it because they said it had "really high miles". Hey, if it's over a million miles I might have a modicum of concern - but not 330K.

My grandpa had a work truck with a 24 valve in it. Over 500k and still woke up everyday ready for work along side my grandpa. One of the best motors that will ever be produced.

You know a lot more than you realize. I've always found getting stuff apart easy, getting it back together and functioning properly though is the tricky part.
I think I have watched about a 10 of your teardown videos at this point (they are quite relaxing to watch) and I am always amazed at how you can pull apart and engine and not get grease and gunk on your clothes. It seems like I can't even check my oil half the time without getting something on my pants or shirt.
When you disassemble the bottom end, carefully remove the oil spray jets for the bottom of the pistons. I'll bet you find debris behind the nozzles for #5 and #6. It's pretty common to see these get clogged and the pistons will overheat, get bound up in the bore and hammer the rod bearings out. Usually cheap oil filter media will break loose and clog the nozzles. jmho

Hammer the rod bearings out? The bearings go first due to lack of oil pressure which is the ONLY thing that "hammers out" rod bearings that actually "spin out". The piston cooling jets end up plugged with rod bearing remnants "hammered" back into the crank and main journals and then flushed into the jets when someone finally "checks the oil" and tries to "heal" the catastrophic failure and "bearing knock" by putting oil in.
Well damn, I almost had the perfect “yOu LoOk LiKe AdAm SaNdLeR” joke ready... stop being self aware
Bruins Jersey... “if the price was wrong”.... I see what’s going on here. Well played.
Love these videos. Keep them coming.
The injectors normally will pop right out, but you need to pull the 21 mm retaining nuts and fuel transfer tubes out of the head with a small pry bar, then injectors will be removable
Great video. No need for a special tool to pull injectors, just pull the crossover tubes and then a screwdriver will pry em up on the hold down

Awesome I Love These Cummins Diesels 5.9 My Last 1 Had 550,000 Miles and Was Still Running When I Sold It 😀😊👨🏼🔧
The "sensor" on the fuel pump is actually the metering valve that controls rail pressure. It is a replaceable part and does not render the pump useless if it is broken.

Great teardown video.
Loving these teardown videos bro. It looks like I'm not the only one too!
Thank you again for taking us on your experiences!!!!
You should be an Auto Comedienne. The humor keeps me laughing while I watch u do the work! God bless and keep them coming!
I really appreciate the fact that your impact sounded like a laser gun when it was sped up
Those are great little powerhouse engines. Last forever. Love em.... great job.
great videos! this dude is no bullshit!!
Thank-you thank-you thank-you for doing it!
It's amazing that you can easily get like 1000 hp out of these engines. I'm in the process of swapping a 12 valve Cummins into my blown up 08 F250 used to be 6.4 truck. Which brings me to my real point, I'd love to see a teardown on a 6.4 Powerstroke. Believe me there are plenty of em, ( most actually lol ) out there that are blown to shit. Love ur videos brother. Keep on wrenching!

I can't tell you how much I pay because I over charge you. Classy and transparent. Shameless.
Very cool. I have never seen a diesel completely torn down.
How and why would anybody give a thumbs down to this video. Love watching your videos. People with no smarts give thumbs down, my opinion.
Have learnt so much watching
Would love to see a 5.9 24v. Love your work, and yes those motors are nasty, the oil is hell to get out, stains everything.
My man is wearing a bruins jersey. I’m hooked.
You all are witnessing the hardest working tool on youtube. The drill guys. The drill.
I love the 5.9 Cummins engine. Owned four of them.
Awesome!! Thank you for doing the Cummins tear-down! I can now say, without a doubt, that I will NOT be attempting a head gasket job on mine. I will gladly pay somebody. For the record, mine doesn't need the head gasket; it's in preparation for compound turbos. :)
I'm not reading the comments yet. I just started watching this video. I can't wait to see what the failure mode is on this beast.
When using a gear puller, if the bolt circle is on the tight side, flip the puller and pull on the flat side of it (I keep it like that most of the times). Hope it makes sense
Didn't know Happy Gilmore was a mechanic. Love your vids BTW
I see we are of a similar mindset. That is that overkill is good place to start. Silly me, when I heard "That head is to heavy to lift off without help." I thought you would roll over an engine hoist, but noooooo here comes the fork truck! Thinking back on it that fork truck gets a lot of use in your shop, safer and easier is always a good thing!
gear puller looked like the plate would serve better upsidedown from the way it was, to keep the bolts from splaying

I've never thought about that, probably would work a lot better! Good idea
Dude....yes. More Diesel Tear Downs.
Nice the first vid I watched today was the lotus now you're doing the 04 Cummins which is my truck.it has 329,000 miles still running strong everyday driver.had the trans rebuilt when I bought it
The plate between the valve cover and head that surrounds the valves is simply called the "Rocker box".
Your impact sounds like a baby alligator when the video is sped up :)
An engine that normally rattles so badly that it's difficult to tell that pistons are hitting the head.

Yes. That engine is nice running as tin bucket of gravel
All gear timing. Nice.
Makes the 4.9L I6 in my 1984 F150 look like a Honda 4 banger... When I rebuilt it, the only items I used a hoist on were the whole assembly and the block. That head probably weighs more than said block... :O
Looking forward to seeing the 6.7l 2016 torn down. In the market to buy a 2018 6.7 Cummins RAM
Great video, but cmon, lets fire up part 2 already!
When did Happy Gilmore start making KZread videos?? Lol Love your videos. Keep it up!
Love your videos. How bout that Lightning!
good videos
5:30 Nice set of 03/04 Mustang GT premium wheels on the ground ;)
You got to sell that fast forwarded impact gun sound to game makers that's freaking awesome
Nice!!
The injectors tend to "pull" MUCH more easily if you remove the "cross tubes" first.
Something else I'd like to see is a 5.4 3v engine teardown. These were notoriously bad engines due to an under pressured oil system and narrow oil galleys. There are other videos of people working on them but none of someone just stripping the motor quickly. I'd like to see one for reference since it's possible I'll be working on one sometime soon; I have a 5.4 3v and as far as I know the timing components have never been replaced or upgraded. At 211,000 miles, I have to assume it's coming. So if I have to go in to the motor I'd probably want to replace rocker arms, possibly cams, and check hydraulic lifters as well. With truck prices being what they are it may be wise to replace crank and rod bearings as well. Would be cool to see a quick rundown of all of those components being pulled.
The Holset HX35 are also a popular turbo to use on Honda B series engines, it cheap big turbo 🤷♂️
Hey...quick word of advice.....at 11:40 you started pulling the gear off....use the flat side against the bolts and washers! It saves your washers and bolts
To get the injectors out you need to take out the pickup tubes first (after you take the fuel line off it's the nut holding them in). Pulling the injectors with out removing the tubes can damage them.
I'm gonna take this hammer and give it a little Ta.... a thunk. Had me laughing so much I was almost as cool as Miles Davis !!!
1:57 2004 used HE341 for the turbo, HX35 was used in the older 2nd gen's.
Nice Boston Bruins Jersey👍
This is my engine thats in my truck! Yea that should be a He351 turbo! They are in demand though!
I guess that is one good thing of the DT530/570 series from my beloved Navistar. After removing the torx, you can just pull the injectors out.

All he needs to do is pull the tubes and retainer nuts off
Thank you happy :)
Look at you! Up a lot of subs!
I haven’t watched the video yet, but I’m super curious what you find after having to rebuild mine from scratch. Nothing but the block, pushrods, timing cover, & valve cover survived from mine; not even the turbo. (I.e., it dropped a valve seat)
Boston Bruins fan 👍👍👍
harbor freight sockets are very colorful
Hi from Case in Vegas, I found your Duramax teardown while searching info. on replacing the injectors in my 04 LB7 Duramax, I'm hooked on watching your teardowns, I just watched your 04 5.9 teardown. in addition, I have a 12V with 127k I'm going to marry to an Allison 5 speed. would you happen to have any parts that are needed to complete this marriage? any info would be greatly appreciated.
Yeah... a fully dressed 5.9 is 1,200 lbs minimum. Been a long time since I weighted one but that's the number that sticks in my head.
@ryanbrown918
3 жыл бұрын
Sounds about right. I know my 6.7 Powerstroke is 1100lbs.
Those injectors don't need a special tool to remove, have to pull connection tubes that the fuel lines attach to before the injectors, if they are stuck, put a fuel line on it to have prying surface
I dig the Bruins jersey haha...are you from the Boston/NE area?
do you ever get core automatic transmissions to resell?
You need to pull the crossover tubes before you can get the injectors off. Take off the nut where the injector lines hooked up.
Use a lady slipper for the injectors get under the lip on them and pop them up. Do that after taking the silver tubes out the side of the head. They’re bolted down and torqued to the injectors
GO LEAFS GO !!!🍻
Also when I worked at the heavy equipment shop we always used the forklifts

We had cradles for pulling engines at Greyhound that were specifically made for forklifts. Had a hoist in the engine teardown area but pulling engines in rear engined buses is always a forklift job.

@@jnelson4765 man we literally used it for everything. Used it to remove big cylinders for excavators that thing literally saved my body some much unwanted pain!
Why did you pull the head bolts like that you normally work from outside inwards
Chubs and his wooden hand would be proud of you
do you get some with belts on?
You know an engine is heavy as fuck when one piece of it weighs more than a normal size man does
TY,,,,,,WOW incredible very interesting super kool ,1st class great info.,, AAAAAAAAAAA++++++++++++ again great video I liked it a lot ,keep up the great work.
You got my subscribe but your losing my like for that Bruins jersey 😂 fantastic job tho, loving these tear down videos
Nice bruins jersey
8:15 this is when you notice you’ve missed a bolt
A little Tap Tap Tap a rue 👍
I've never seen a 4 valve head with that valve layout before
Sometimes these can get a little stuck in place so I'm gunna give it a little ta.... thunk
Injectors won’t come out with the fuel transfer tubes still in the cylinder head. Must remove transfer tube hold down nuts then pop transfer tubes out with a screwdriver then pop injectors out with a pry bar after removing injector hold down bolts.
Nice 12v.
I'm surprised to see the timing still in one piece my uncles 97 5.9 cummins the dowel pin fell out destroyed the timing gears and cracked the timing case
the one thing that bothered me was how he took the head off, you wanna take it off in the factory head bolt pattern so that shit dosent warp like a banana
Did u used to work on rotaries?
That's actually a HE341 or HE351 turbo. HX series was on the 2nd gens(pre-2003)
Sounds like the old video game asteroid. Wow, so long ago.
Here we go bruins here we go
6.7 powerstrokes will bring you a good amount of cash, they’re normally not cheap but they’re definitely worth good money for good parts
Mustang gt wheels i see in the background at 6:37? 👀👀
