Dumpster to Dyno: Resurrecting a Rusted Cummins 12 Valve Engine - Part 1
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
Welcome to the first episode of our series 'Dumpster to Dyno: Resurrecting a Rusted Cummins 12 Valve'! In this series, we're taking a discarded Cummins 12 Valve engine block from the dumpster to the dyno, showing you every step along the way.
In this episode, we introduce Scott, Industrial Injection's Creative Director and resident computer whiz. He's feeling threatened by the rise of A.I. and is determined to learn how to build a 12 Valve engine from scratch. Luckily, he has Merlin (@MerlinsOldSchoolGarage ) our seasoned mentor, with the perfect rusted up 12 valve engine block for him to start on.
Merlin will guide Scott through the process as he disassembles, rebuilds, and tests this engine. Will Scott be able to take this engine from the dumpster to the dyno? Can he swap his keyboard for a wrench and handle the grease and grime? Tune in to find out!
Join us on this journey as we breathe new life into an old engine and take it from a rusted relic to a roaring powerhouse. This is Dumpster to Dyno, and the adventure is just beginning.
@jetskijim007 comes up with the perfect nick-name for Merlin - he will be Scott's I.A. (intelligent artifact.)

Herbert James "Bert" Munro Born: 25 March 1899 Invercargill, New Zealand Died: 6 January 1978 (aged 78) Invercargill, New Zealand
"Burt Munro, from Australia." The sort of thing that gets Kiwi's, from New Zealand, screaming at the screen. Burt is a national treasure of New Zealand. If you get the chance to see the movie "The Worlds Fastest Indian" about Burt, it is a very good watch. There is a documentary too, that is even better. It has the real Burt in it.

Listen to old guys because they habe forgotten more than we can learn when we're young.
Awesome to see people still want to learn mechanics and good on you guys for teaching 👏

I had to watch this after seeing it built and a wedding gift to Merlin's Daughter and the lucky guy who married her

I could listen to Merlin all day. Dude has so much wisdom. Love what he said about learning from everyone you meet-no wonder he is such a genius. I’m pumped to watch this series and what Scott does with the engine.
You can tell that Merlin is truly a good kind hearted guy you can tell that Merlin has a good soul by his actions and his reactions
That’s awesome. I know Scott used that same acid back when we worked for the mob.

Awesome video thanks guys so great
Back in the 70s I had an easier way of pushing those pistons out. I made a device that when around the rod that pushed on the bosses on the bottom of the pistons. Soak the top of the pistons in Used Motor Oil ( cheap Loose Juice ), stick the whole Block in a 20 ton press, 20 minutes later I had all the Pistons out. No cussing or busted knuckles.
Lots of great parts on that dumpster find!
I wondered how long it would take Merlin to bring up that 30 yr., lake Powell , Ford V8!😁 Great video brother.
Muriatic acid is weak hydrochloric acid, it will work eventually but will etch the cylinder walls. Sodium Hydroxide (lye) is better if you are trying to get aluminum pistons out of an engine and you don't care about the pistons at all. It is very reactive to aluminum and won't attack the cylinder walls as much, it also won't be in contact with the cylinder walls as long. You do have to be a lot more careful around lye (ie no splashing) because it will eat skin - use long rubber gloves. Use only in a well ventilated area, because it produces a lot of hydrogen gas and oxygen gas as by-products.
Definitely get I A shirts and hats made up!!
OK you hooked me (suscribed) with this build, I have this same engine in my Fummins, keep the content and conversations coming!
If you got Merlin, you will have a good motor Merlin could tinker with a rock and get it running
Hey Guys !!! Well done to get that motor apart !! 🙂🙃😉😊 If you haven't seen it yet ,, they made a movie out of "" Burt Monroe's "Scout"" Cycle called ""The Worlds Fastest Indian "" !! 🤔🙄
This will be a fun series to watch. Your videos are getting better and better. I really liked the change in B roll music, although from a sound engineer's viewpoint it was still a bit loud compared to the dialog. Keep on keeping on, guys!
I really didn’t think it was coming apart
Very entertaining 😂

@@industrialinjection50’s model anything. That’s an era when vehicles had soles and engineers invested a lot more attention to details in those vehicles.
I seen the Muratic Acid in Cylinder trick used on a whole different type cylinder before. Needless to say the user was block and piston shopping after 24hrs. Pitted the shit out of the cylinder walls.

What dumpster did you find that in... ? Seems sus
Damn I saw Merlin, 12 and V and I was thinking, why would someone throw a spitfire engine in the dumpster.....
😎💯✌
Great video, and lots of knowledge, but like lots and lots of other videos, the music messes it up. I seriously doubt that anyone wants to hear that mess... especially that loud. I watched it anyway, certainly not to hear the music, but because I can learn from Merlin. Tradeoffs...
Should be a nicely seasoned block. As long as it's not cracked......

Great video, but can I suggest 1 little tweak on the production side... The montage music spikes at about twice the normal volume, sending me running for the remote so the boss lady doesn't get pissy. Not complaining... just some constructive feedback.

@@industrialinjection nothing to take into any account. You are NEVER going to please everyone with videos, there will ALWAYS be people spewing negativity about something. This video wasnt supposed to be about the build of the engine, it was just an introduction to the build and how this block came about. I enjoyed it and i am looking forward to seeing the machining and build process of the rusty dumpster block.

@@wtchr6883 Its just muriatic acid, its not anything that will eat your face off but it isnt to be taken lightly when using it. Its the same stuff we pour in our swimming pools to get the chemical levels correct. It can be used on concrete floors to clean it too. Yes, in a perfect world, they would have been wearing safety goggles and a long sleeve protective shirtr as well as gloves but in the real world, people that have used this stuff usually do it like Merlin just did. They pour it on or in whatever they are cleaning and use caution not to get it all over everything. You can pour this stuff on your hands then just walk over to the hose or sink and rinse it off, it wont immediately start eating away your skin. The fumes will take your breath away if you get a big whiff of it so stay upwind when using it.
