[4K] NEW International Market Place in Waikiki Hawaii - Walking Tour Vlog & Travel Guide 🎧

International Market Place is an open-air shopping center located in Waikīkī on the island of O‘ahu Hawaii. It first opened in 1956 as a commercial, retail and entertainment center. After closing for complete renovation in 2013, the International Market Place reopened on August 25, 2016. The International Market Place's tenants include approximately 90 stores and 10 restaurants. Its anchor tenant is a three-level, 80,000-square-foot Saks Fifth Avenue, which is the department store’s only full-line Hawai‘i location.

The old International Market Place was a bit kitschy but had certain charm. Now it's just another high end shopping center.

Wow! I am really sad to see that this isn't a place with local mom & pop vendors. That's what I was hoping for. This is a high end mall. Thanks for sharing. I learned something new.

I love, admire and respect Hawaii, but, I have to say that I really prefer the original International Marketplace. The original International Marketplace was authentic and not so pretentious, the way that it is now seems so uppity, stale and uninviting. On our Honeymoon back in 1989, we shopped at the original International Marketplace (obviously), and it was quite pleasant to shop there, we talked with the locals selling their goods and it was more personalized and inviting. The Hotels and surrounding outside scenery is absolutely stunning. Thank you for sharing!

I agree, we went on our honeymoon in 2001...so glad we got to see the original Marketplace and got to dance at Coconut Willy's. We had such fun, sad to see it all changed so much, so new and fancy, just like a commonplace open air mall. I guess everything changes, but we hold precious memories and photos of our honeymoon in Waikiki.

I had plans to visit the international market next year. Especially seeing it the way I remembered it back in the 80s. I'm really surprised how it changed so much. I am glad that they did save the big old Banyan Tree.

The Int. Marketplace changed a lot over the last 25 years, and it looks like every Shopping Mall in the US. It lost his traditional Hawaiian style, unfortunately.

I agree. When I was in Hawaii, many, many moons ago, it was always a delight to go to the Marketplace. There were vendors there that sold everything. If you wanted it, chances are you could find it there. The first thing I noticed in this vid is the complete lack of people present. Last time I was there, back in the '90s, it was packed!! This... Looks like a cheap tourist trap.

Thank you for the video. I love this place, it looks very beautiful, multicultural and people-friendly now: it has both Hawaiian items, Japanese and other Asian cultures stores and fancy stores as well , places for people to get together, talk, play and eat. I wish they put the chairs and benches back so you could sit and enjoy the atmosphere.🌺❤🤗

18:00 - interesting that the info boards TOTALLY gloss over the crazy, sketchy, totally feral and totally fascinating dark-n-messy labyrinth of asian micro-capitalism that it was back in the late 90's and early 2000's. (I guess it would be pretty difficult to describe :) I adored it back then, and I adore this version as well, altho it is a bit cookie-cutter... Fantastic food, fun stores, lovely walking and hanging-out spaces, and wow, the gorgeous design elements everywhere... only thing, hopefully by now they have the seating back in...

So sad to see this after all the great stores, restaurants and memories of living there more than 10 years ago and visiting the the old International Marketplace often. Ate and shopped there often. Now just a nothing high-end, no people place wit a little kid hearing his own voice echo. Can't watch the whole thing.

@Kim....It was a magical place in the 1960's and early '70s. Quite wide across and FULL of small vendors with a range of products that anyone could afford. I think It had started to deteriorate by 1978. From 1995 to 2013 it was reduced to a lane with few familar sites and smells. Trucks used it to get between Kalakaua and Kuhio. It definitely needed help..but I was stunned too. Sadly, it needed the kind of $ that big names can contribute. Now Golden Week shoppers may be enticed to spend while their spouses golf at places like Hawaii Kai.

It was charming in the early 80's. Now the shops are just upscale malls like any other town or city. Why would anyone want to visit now. At least I have some great memories. Watching this is just sad. They paved paradise and put up a shopping mall! ( Joni Mitchell)

@@lauram1084 I was there 20-30 years later in the 1990s to 2010. Even with deterioration, it was much more unique, friendly and inexpensive than what it has deteriorated to now by putting up a mall that could be about anyplace and putting all the locals and small business people out of business. Sad to see.

We checked it out 2 years ago and we were horrified. It isn't meant for normal people, but for high end shoppers. We are low end shoppers and have frequented the old market over 40 years. The current shops are very expensive and the restaurants are extremely pricey. The thing I hate most at both the new International Mktplace and Royal Hawaiian shopping center is the artificial grass where little children frolic barefoot and young dancers dance daily also barefoot. This artificial lawn is toxic. It might take years for cancer to develop, but you can expect cancer and birth defects showing up at some point. Real grass that is not sprayed with toxic chemicals is so much safer.
