4D Toys | WHEN DIMENSIONS COLLIDE

Ойындар

4D Toys is an interesting little simulator pertaining to objects in 4D space! Not sure if I'd call it a game, though.

By explaining it like that you might cause people to misunderstand the concept of dimensions. The objects don't enter the fourth dimension, a dimension is simply a direction in which you can move, because of this, what we perceive as our universe is only a segment, just like a two-dimensional universe would be a segment to ours. The toys are simply moving in a direction you are unable to move or perceive.

Let me have a go at it then. When you move the 2D stick figure to a different 2D slice of the 3D world, the object seems to dissappear. It does not dissappear though, the stickman just stops perceiving it because the current 2D slice did not have a slice of the object on it. Similarly, when we, 3D folk, look at the 4D world, we can only do so a slice at a time. Our reality simply does not have a way of placing objects along a fourth dimension. We can only see up to three. The difference would be, that the 2D stickman could only see a 2D slice of the 3D world, but he could move along the third dimension to see what another slice would look like. We can similarly, only see a slice of the 4D world. But we do not see a 2D slice, we see a 3D slice instead. What is, for us, our whole spatial understanding, is only really considered a slice of the fourth axis! It's still a slice. It just has three dimensions rather than the two we are used to when we refer to the word "slice".

Yeah, but this is a 2D monitor, and 4D beings would have spherical eyesight like we have circular eyesight. The way we see a line is probably half of the way a 4D being would see this screen. Also, I've heard that a 4D universe would have no stable atoms or solar systems, so you can't have life in a 4D universe. To me that sounds pretty dumb

Fascinating. Want to try it for myself. Btw, I think the slider is for traveling through the fourth dimension. We can't see the fourth dimension simultaneously, but we could travel through the 3D slices inside a 4th dimension... It's really hard to explain but that's what I thought.

If I could make some suggestions to the devs I'd tell them to feed the players gradually: 1. Start with 3D objects in 4D space instead of directly 4D objects. 2. Give control over the rotation and translation of object about W. 3. put the W camera translation (the slider on the right) on middle mouse roll. Very easy for the devs and very intuition-building for the players.

  • @nodezsh

There's an issue with your first point. If the objects were 3D and the space 4D, the objects would only be visible on a single point of the 4D axis (not a segment, a single point). Thus to see them, you'd have to set the slider to the exact point that contains the object. Though I guess understanding this would make it easier to understand further concepts.

It "pops out of thin air" because you are knocking a 4D object into the 3D space that is visible to you. Like moving a sphere through a 2D plane, at first you don't see anything on the plane, then a circle appears, it gets bigger, then small, then it disappears. That was the sphere passing through the 2D plane. Likewise, that was a 4D cuboid passing through a 3D plane :)

I actually had to come up with new words to describe what the heck I was seeing. And it actually helps my thought process to have those words on hand. When something moves "upward" on the W-axis, it moves "enkward". "Down-W" is "dessward". At around @11:00 when the three hyperspheres and the one tesseract are around, the green hypersphere is "abenk" the rest of the stuff instead of "above", while the blue one is "bedess" everything else instead of "below". It's like, you're standing in one place at 3 o'clock, but you won't be there at 6 o'clock, so something else can be there at 6 instead of you. So the two of you aren't inhabiting the same space. At 32:30 I had to remember that these are all 3D cross-sections of 4D things. Cut a donut in half along a plane. See how it looks like 2 circles? The blue donut turning into two spheres is like that, but with an extra dimension.

That's pretty cool. Thanks for sharing this video of it. There is no single way that 4D stuff necessarily would be perceived by 3D beings, because that would depend on HOW they the physics involved in perceiving them, which we wouldn't know until we knew the physical nature of the 4th dimension in question. What you're looking at is a slice at any given time, with the slider changing the position of the slice, and not actually doing ANYTHING to the shape, color, or position, of any of the objects. In other words, moving the slider is changing nothing but what 3d hyperplane of 4D hyperspace you're able to see. To better understand the 4D shape of such objects, look for animations of 4D objects. Most such animations will be projections rather than slices. Just as the globe shaped Earth can be projected onto a flat map, but is distorted in the process, likewise any projection of 4D objects into 3D space or onto a 2D screen or surface will also involve distortion.

A hypercube is like a regular 3-D cube except instead of having 6 faces, you have 6 cubes squished together. You can't imagine a Hypercube because we can only perceive up to the 3-Demension since a Hypercube is a 4-D shape. 2-Demensional beings can only see up to 1-Demensional while 3-Demensional beings like us can only see up to 2-Demensions.

If we were 4 dimensional then we would see cubically. The peripheral vision would see the 4th dimension and our channel vision would see the 3rd dimension. If a 4D being woke up in our dimension then this being would instantly notice his general vision is extremely limited because his peripheral vision is all black since our universe is only one cube compared to the fourth dimension. The 4D being's weight, density, and gravitational pull will be several times larger than an average 3D being's. I'm pretty sure 3D food is nothing compared to the 4D being, he'd be ALWAYS hungry. If you woke up in the 4th dimension, then compared to every other 4D being, your vision would be extremely limited. You'd only be able to see one 3rd dimension at a time, compared everyone else, who can see six at a time. You'd be as light as a feather compared to the 4D beings And 4D yogurt would probably feel like sticking a whole 3D pizza pie down your throat.

The intro looks to be an illustration of the beginning of the short story "Mimsy Were the Borogoves" by Lewis Padgett. You can find it online. Very very cool story that involves some kind of posthuman being sending some of his child's toys into our world as a test of his equipment, and then a boy and his baby sister in 1950s America find them. Their perception of reality begins to change as they play with the toys.

I just watched and understood the whole thing. I can't really think about the shapes but I can understand the explanations and stuff fully. If you know what I mean. Also, I found every cube of the 8-Cell at 17:14 and 19:08. At 19:08 you can see all the faces of the hexagonal prism, or rather the cells of the tesseract By the way, I heard that we live in a 3D universe for a reason: 2D universes have no gravity (seriously, I don't believe that) and 4D universes have no stable atoms or solar systems. You wish you were 4D? Then you'd have a 5D game and have spherical vision, so nothing would really change. I like 4D crap

16:38 Actually it wouldn’t necessarily be that many pentagons, because the dodecahedrons would share pentagons with adjacent dodecahedrons. I know it sounds weird, but if you look at a dodecahedron, you’ll see that the pentagons share lines with each other. The same concept applies with the dodecahedrons of a 120 cell, sharing pentagons with each other.

The blocks aren't moving into the 4th dimension. Instead you are looking at a 3d slice of the 4th dimension and when the blocks that move outside of the slice you are in they are no longer in the same 3d space you are looking at. Think of it as taking a 2d slice of a cone near the top wear it's the most narrow. if an object moves outside that circle it didn't move into 3d space. it just moved to a slice of that cone where the 2d slice is wider which is the plane you are not on.

Everyone here is close enough. The reason you can't fully see a 4D object is because it's moving through time (trenth). To put it simply - one cross-section of the 4D object is visible now, another cross-section is visible tomorrow, and another cross-section was visible yesterday. As 3D beings, we can only experience one single moment at a time. Whereas, a 4D being can see numerous time-frames (days, weeks, months) all at once. Here is another way to describe it: Imagine a street on a Monday afternoon. You are walking down the road when you see a 4D object suddenly start to appear. You'll see a 3D cross-section starting to appear because it's being pushed through Sunday, and into Monday. The more visible it is to you, the less visible it is to those who were walking down that same street on Sunday. So with that logic - When it starts to disappear from your view (on Monday), people who happen to be walking down the street on Tuesday are now starting to see it. This in turn means that when Tuesday can no longer see it, it's because it's being pushed further through time. Edit: I'm using days as an example, but these frames could be minutes, hours, days, weeks, or even months.

6:32 actually, they don’t look like that, that is just a projection of a hyper cube into the third dimension. Much like how if you see a cube on a screen it is just a 2 dimensional space creating a 2 dimensional object that looks like a cube

The question that baffles me is where is the slider? How does it look? Like, in what direction are you moving the slider? The 2D to 3D perspective we get a look at a slider...but for 4D, I couldn't tell what was going on. It's so intriguing

We cannot see a true tesseract without a 3d retina, however if we had a 3d retina, and we some how got to a 4d reality AND SURVIVED we would see it but probably not comprehend it, I speculate WITHOUT rotating it it would look somewhat like a normal cube

You can look at a 2D projection of a 3D projection of a wireframe tesseract on Wikipedia and Google and stuff. A wireframe cube projected into 2D looks like a square surrounding four trapeziums and a little square. A tesseract projected into 3D also looks like that - a big cube surrounding six trapezoids and a little cube. Until you rotate it - but there are plenty of GIFs on that so I'll leave you to it.

"Is that what a 4D cube really looks like?" It's even worse! As you rotate the cube in 4D the cube changes orientation. I.E. one of the cubes appears to grow and "consume" the other as it rotates.

If you want to be in a 4 d universe, NO. Because in one of the replys in a comment, a 4d being would have 4d eyeballs and the iris is 3d that we can see in a 4d universe and since we are 3d beings, 2d is flat so 4d beings will think of 3d as 2d. And also 4d creatures will have a spherical iris but a 4d universe is unstable because the atoms dimension can be less than 3D, but not more than 3d because an atom has the maximum dimension of 3 right now. But there could be a possibility that atoms might evolve and have 4d as max dimension in more than a 100 years maybe. But it is a hypothesis that says you cant go in a 4d dimension right now in the 20th century
