410hp NOT 370hp! Why would Maserati not tell the truth about the 3200GT?

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

With a history of intense rivalry, Ferrari and Maserati were suddenly brought together under the same corporate roof in 1997. Did internal politics come into play in 1998 at the launch of the Maserati 3200GT? Ferrari took a controlling interest in Maserati in 1997, and became full owners by 1999. When the Maserati 3200GT was launched at the Paris Motor Show in October 1998, the Ferrari 456M had just been launched a few months before. The Ferrari 360 would be launched just a few months later, in March 1999. An interesting tale of misleading claims to protect the 'premier' Ferrari brand.

00:50 Why are you only quoting 370hp for these cars?
01:20 Why would Maserati lie about the output?

02:20 Ferrari take controlling interest in Maserati in 1997.
04:00 Enzo refuses the Italian president a factory tour because he arrived in a Maserati.
04:50 Ownership of Maserati.

06:10 The Ferrari line up in 1998 456M, 550 Maranello, F355
07:15 The new Ferrari 360 in 1999 would only develop 395bhp (400PS)
07:38 The Maserati 3200GT develops consistently 400+bhp. Typically 410hp.
09:30 A study into power to weight ratios. A true reflection on the track ability of a car.
10:40 The 3200GT actually develops 257bhp/tonne. Same as an Aston Vantage V8 (2008), BMW M6 (2005), Lancer EVO FQ400, Ferrari 456GT.

Oh, didn't know that. But when you switch off ASR it's extra-quick. And if you listen to the two turbos at 65 mph, there is this unmistakable sound of acoustic resonance between the two turbos like in a jet airplane. And the V8. In combination with the automatic gearbox, this GT rides like a Riva-motorboat, where you also can listen to the resonances and power of the twin-V8-engines. Finally, the cream pie of this vehicle is its rear-end. Everybody knows that, because of the boomerang - LED-lights. But the rear end of this vehicle is not only that, it is also the lines of the rear transom like the the tail end of a Riva Tritone or Aquarama. Stylistically, every 32OO GT is one of the rare Riva-Runabouts on the road.

I had a brand new one from Maranello in 2000, Argentinian blue with silver pipped hide, fully loaded auto with every extra, I had it 4 years, fab car very reliable no issues but servicing could be spiteful, and it was fast. I had a full on race with a 996 turbo and I saw 192mph on the speedo when I backed off and it was still going probably would of seen 195mph, which is probably a genuine 175-180. The Porsche was some way behind. I’ve had so many great cars but the 3200gt felt special every time I went out.

The 3200GT engine wasn't developed into the engine that went into the Maserati 4200GT and the Ferrari F430. The M138 engine in the 4200GT that was then used by Ferrari was designed by FIAT Powertrain Technologies (FPT) who do all of the FIAT group engines. It was designed using their "modular design" system and is conceptually more similar to two Alfa Romeo engines welded together! The 3200GT engine and the 4200GT engine share nothing in common - they are completely different. As are the cars - although they share a common "look" to them, the two cars share very little in common and have very few common parts.

Thanks, i stand corrected. But you have to agree that the Italians and FCA group have never been that honest where their technology has come from. e.g. Alfa QV/California T and MC20 etc. Ed

"The internet" says that M138 was developed by Ferrari for Maserati and Ferrari V8 models. It also says that Fiat Powertrain Technologies (FPT) was established in March 2005, almost 4 years after the launch of the 4200 Spyder, the first one with that engine.

I heard couple of times and there's been discussions on forums that 3200 was "detuned" by incorrect timing set from the factory, so when changing belts if you adjust timing exactly as needed you get full potential. So official numbers might be correct for factory cars, when set properly they are obviously higher.

It was so good, until the part with torque and power. Sadly as wrong as many other english speaking countries tend to get it. Torque does not generate acceleration and power not the top speed. They are inseparatably intertwined and a function of each other. Horsepower accelerates and gives you top speed. The more power, the faster you accelerate and faster you go at vmax. You either have a lot of torque with low rpms or little torque with lot of rpms. It almost does not matter, if both have the same power. Only in subjective feel and certain situations. The differentiating factor is how fast the engine revs and how adapted the gearing is

Ed, massively enjoyed your perspective on the Maserati 3300Gt. Due to spare parts issue now with the 3300Gt, I was considering entering the market.on a 2008 Gransport LE. How would you consider & rate this option v the 3300Gt? I would really appreciate your opinion? Naturally I've subscribed & look fwd to enjoying more of your commentary on Italian machines particularly Maserati. Cheers from Scotland 🍻

Hi William. The Gransport will have much more commonality with the Ferraris of that era. Whilst looking the same, the 3200 is a very different beast which Ferrari turned their backs on when they took over Maserati. They wouldn’t even warrant used cars. The Gransport is arguably the better car. All I would suggest is that you carefully inspect any prospective purchase as either model could be ruinously expensive to put right. Hope this helps? Ed

Hi Ed Whilst on my hunt for My Maserati, I came across a video from Top Gear 1999, with Tiff Needle on the 3200Gt. Just like his namesake, he was far from generous of the car on its release. Even with the outstanding boomerang back lights he used the Honda reference! Needless to say, I much preferred your vastly professional approach & delivery on this car. I must confess after getting to know the model over the Internet, my head has been turned by the automatic from the Gransport. Can I possibly ask a favour of you? There's two 3200Gts (auto) on Autocar @ present. One in dealer the other private sale. At first glance it's the private sale that's grabbed my attention, more miles but we'll looked after. What do you think? Coming from Scotland, don't totally want to waste my time going down. Cheers( if possible) Will 🍻🍻🍻

Hi Will. Without looking at the adverts my gut feeling is that the private sale is risky unless you know what you’re looking at AND getting an inspection done. With the dealer sale you’re covered by the Consumer Rights Act. Whereby you can return or get the car fixed. I’ll have a search for the ads and let you know further. Ed

Plenty of specialists here in the UK. You also have to remember that this was a ‘Maserati’ era car and not a ‘Ferrari’ one. That being said they were sold in tiny numbers but there are still parts breakers out there as unfortunately some were/are too expensive to fix and worth more in parts. We need to keep as many of them on the road as possible. Ed
