    Been watching you for some time and enjoying every video. Somehow, this is the first time I've heard you mention the "train down" technique. I didn't even know it was possible. I use pvc sewer pipe with pre-drilled holes as my "moss pole" I can't chop or extend.... but I can do top cuttings and I can train down. So that's what I will do. Thank you for all your many contributions.

    🎃 Autumn is upon us here. Thank you for the excellent content to keep 🌞 sunnier days on the horizon. Getting ready to reorganize my moss poles away from windows that all have a heat vent below. Going to use a mix of mother vertical and soltech pendants to hopefully keep everyone happy through winter. Eventually if and when my plants get as lush as yours I'm gonna need to lose some furniture and rearrange some more . Who needs guest seating? 😹😻

    I got all my moss, coated galvanized wire and zip ties and am ready to make my first moss pole today. I have watched the moss pole videos many times so even though I've never done this, I feel I know what i am doing. I did play around with the wire last night and noticed I did get 25.4mm holes in my wire (1 inch) so i cut Jan's 15 squares down to 8 for me. I'm excited to start my moss pole journey. The ony difficult part for me is figuring out which plant I should start with first. Thank you Jan for another great and informative video. ❤

    Your Manjula Pothos is my absolute favourite! I got one myself, but trailing down. It´s very white so it grows slower than the other pothos I have. But it seems to be very happy. I love to touch the leaves, they feel pretty strong. So easy plant with just stunning markings on the leaves.

    YES! That manjula is incredible. I recently allowed myself to get a new pothos and looked at both manjula and N'joy. I chose the N'joy and I DO love it, but seeing his big beautiful manjula makes me think i need to allow myself to buy another pothos. Lol. Also, it makes me consider putting my N'joy on a pole to get it to have the BIG beautiful leaves.

    Another great video! You have totally gotten me hooked to moss poles. I have an experiment idea for you which might make an interesting video. You keep saying that the climbing plants growing their roots into the moss pole is an important factor which makes the plants mature (of course light and other things play a part as well). However, it could be that the main thing in maturation is just the fact that plant is able to grow up. I'm pretty sure that there probably is some plant hormone that for example, could be produced in the tip of the vine, which then spreads evenly to the plant (due to gravity). When the plant is laying flat or hangs, this hormone would be present everywhere in the plant. When the plant grows upwards enough, it could be that the top parts of the plant is released from the effect of this hormone, triggering these parts of the plant to mature. This is just a quick example of a possibility for what goes on in the plant. You could test this by growing the plant upwards so that it cannot root to a support, for example by attaching a string to the top of the vine and rising the string as the plant grows. Would be really interesting to see if the plant will show maturation in such an experiment or whether indeed the rooting to the pole is required. Auxin is a famous example of a plant hormone that regulates plant growth in relation to sunlight, gravity, water etc. if you want to start researching this topic. I'm too lazy to conduct such an experiment, I would like to watch you try it and in Australia you have the growing season ahead of you unlike me here in Europe.

    @@heatherstephens9295 I don't have any practical use in mind, it would just be an experimental tool to see whether growing roots into a pole is really needed for maturation (or how much the moss pole improves this maturation), which is an interesting question to me.

    Hi! Thank you for your videos and advice, it has helped me a lot! I’ve watched your other videos and in one of them you showed that you have sometimes, when you chop and extend, put the top pole+plant on the side of the bottom pole to make the whole plant fuller or have multiple plants in a pole and then you extend. Is there a video or a way you can teach us how to to do that? I’d love to be able to fill a pole with plants all around it. Thanks!

    When you do chop & extend, what do you do with the bottom part of the plant?

  • @olgaleonova8098
    @olgaleonova80989 ай бұрын

    Hey! You know that when you chop the top, plant will reshoot in two upper nodes to have better chances to survive. Plants have another grow pattern, and you said it right: when it’s vine goes down (backwards) then the plant makes less efforts to thrive its “top”. But the plant still have so much potential, and so much willing to grow, so one day it decides to reshoot in that node which is the highest in space to make a new top, and totally forgets its previous “top”. In your case it may reshoot at the top of the moss pole. And may not, who knows. By the way, didn’t you think of reverse not the plant vine leaf by leaf, but reverse the whole moss pole? Plant would be suffering a lot, but ones, instead of you and plant fighting against nature week by week and leaf by leaf until it’s over.

    Have you gotten to the point with any of your poles where you have added so many vines/shoots (like your M. El Salvador) that there isn't enough room in the pole for all the roots? I don't think I've haven't seen you mention this as an issue, but I could've missed it. Great video, as always!!

    Just a thought. Doing a chop and extend in the fall and winter may be a good thing. Since the foliage growth is very slowed down, the plant may concentrate on root growth and not show any signs of setback on the leaves? I think I’ll try on my adansonii to see. It’s near the top of its pole now, so perfect candidate.

    Do you ever take the top cutting off the pole and place it with the bottom cutting to thicken the growth. I have seen utubers do this by taking the moss and roots out of the top part, and take out as much moss as necessary to place it inside with the lower cutting. I just attempted this and not sure about the success as the plant is in intense shock right now with very droopy leaves.

    Hi, great video ! I already saw it some weeks ago but a doubt has been going through my mind : In the up and down technique, when the chop and extend comes. do you also chop the up ↑ and ↓ down section from the top of the moss pole? You say in the video that you will have three vines but if you chop it just in the middle of the moss pole you will have 2 vines , one ↑↓ and the other one ↑. Hope I explained myself and thanks! 😊

  • @lindsey4178

    @lindsey4178

    A couple things. First, growing UP alone, on something like a moss pole, makes a big difference. I think it signals the plant to grow larger. You can even get regular pothos pretty large if it is growing upwards. Second, the moss pole staying moist allows the plant to make more roots at each node. Most of the time, you only get the roots under the ground but giving the nodes the right environment, they will burrow roots into the pole giving it more nutrients and water along the length of the plant. Also, when you take a cutting from your plant and propagate it, you will only maintain the leaf maturity on your TOP cutting and the original plant at the bottom. Cuttings from the middle of the vine may still stay a bit large but it will revert a bit to a more adolescent stage.
