My parents raised me on stoicism. Growing up we never watched the news, I’m 29 now & have no interest in the news, social media or tv. I feel like it’s normal until I hang out with friends and they’re shocked by my lifestyle 🤔😂

It's so weird... Growing up, I have always had a stoic streak to my character. I have always wanted to remain calm and collected and not let my emotions get the best of me. Contrary to my family members and friends, who blows up over little things like "Someone disagreed with me on facebook!" or "someone wrote a mean comment on youtube!". Wouldn't their lives be much easier if they just.... Accepted the fact that there will be assholes in the world, and there is nothing you can do about it? Quit wasting energy on that and move on? When I did my mandatory military service (my country has that) I came through simply by accepting that I had to do the time, so I can later move on. And I did the time. It wasn't easy of course, but I think it helped that I had embraced the fact that I was there and that it probably would suck.... But if I just suck up and did the time, then I would eventually be free. And here I am today. And this was all before I had researched stoicism any further! I had heard about it in school, it was this philosophy that was like Spock from Star Trek, right? Feel nothing, not love or sex? Now that sounds like a dull philosophy right? So a few months back I Meditations and I went "YES! That is what I have been thinking all along!" And as I have been digging deeper, the more excited I am over it! And that has helped me a lot, especially since the Corona outbreak, which has sent a lot of friends and familymembers in panic, while I remain calm and collected. This epidemic is beyond my control. I better just focus on what it is I can do.

it's interesting how it's impossible to do some of this as a high school student. I start my classes at 7:30 am. I don't have that much time to do my tasks for the day before it has already started. I sometimes meditate in the morning if I have time, and I always take time to stretch.

The First Take clip connected with me. First Take has been my show for years. I'd feed off the non stop debates. When Tom Brady became a free agent that is when I started to grow tired, not only of that show but sports media in general. Felt like the only thing they could talk about was where was Tom going. I rolled my eyes. Stopped watching ESPN for a week. Or whenever they talked about Mahomes. I knew when KC won the Superbowl what the talk was gonna be. I didn't watch a week. Even before this I became more conscious of sports media. I watch less of it now. Will likely watch even less of it starting today, like you said, the constant ongoing reports without a conclusion is what the news is driven by. It will work itself out. Then I'll find out one way or another.

Randy Peace Did you happen to watch sports media while Tim Tebow was considering making the jump to pro? At the time they talked about him so much my nephew who constantly watched ESPN was sick of hearing the guy. We also lived in Denver at the time and the local news is constantly non-stop talking about the Broncos. I looked at my nephew and said “just wait, I bet he’s going to be playing for the Broncos, then it’s gonna be all Tebow all the time.” Sure enough they drafted him and I can remember my nephew’s expression. He didn’t say it out, but he wanted to say “fuck you for jinxing us”. Took some serious time off sports shows after that.

Hey Ryan, First of all, I appreciate all the work that you do to educate the world about stoicism and stillness. It is truly inspiring that you're doing this. I just have a question near 13:40 where you said to do the main thing right away (i.e. waking up early, going for a walk/bike, and journaling before we expose ourselves to anything that's not "important".) Why is it that, to you, and perhaps to everyone, that we wake up early in the morning, go for a walk, and journal to start our day? Why are these aspects most important? Why should we follow this daily routine? Thanks.

richard usher There’s a difference between a priest and a state formally “recognizing” a relationship...and an actual relationship. The number of divorces is due to the number of people who don’t get this. If you think a priest and a contract is the same as a relationship, you’ve got a lot to learn. If you think being a creative genius is equivalent to being “happy,” you’ve got even more to learn. Everything you wrote is wrong.

Of which Ryan states was "nonsense." Then proceeds to list an array of married people and the importance of their life partnerships in their lives: Angela Merkle, Gertrude Stein, Madame Curie, John Stuart Mill, J. Cole. Exclusively focusing in on the relationship of marriage. Of which I believe is a limitation of his western materialist paradigm and him projecting his own values and needs onto others. Of every example he produces I could list just as powerful examples of spiritual figures, who are thriving or thrived in unmarried lifestyles: Yogananda, Thich Nhat Hanh, Dalia Lama, Pema Chodron, etc, etc. The importance of marriage is subjective and for many it would not allow them to reach their higher selves, and for others it would.

Etc . I wasn't arguing whether marriage was objectively important, that's already answered in my mind and is a moot point. To call Siddhartha Gautama a deadbeat because he left his wife and son to follow asceticism is kind of overexaggerating. He was a prince, remember? They were set for life with or without him. The conflict in his life as perceived by his father was either to become a great spiritual leader or a great conqueror as foretold of his destiny. His father tried to make that decision for him. So, everyone who was involved in raising him would've been very aware of his father's intentions. I doubt that him leaving was a great surprise to them, it was probably a great catharsis to see the prophecy unfold in such an inspiring non-secular fashion.

Why was it necessary to use a negative comment about Trump to make his point about not consuming network news? It wasn't. In another video Ryan makes a reference to Trump calling COVID-19 a Chinese Virus. He goes on to offer up his opinion that it's racist to do so. These aren't the only two examples of his subtle attempts to let his political leanings be known. This channel is about stoicism and not politics. This channel should be a place where we can all learn to rise above the childish political landscape. Ryan hurts his credibility as a Stoic when he slings mud.

@@ClintGrantham wouldn't that just hurt the credibility of his argument or are you using your anger/frustration/triggers in order to make ad hominem attacks?

Everything leading up to 5:02 is horrible, what he is saying. That we must care what others think so that we can get people to like us enough to want to be our friend! That those of us who don't have any friends and don't have a romantic partner are doomed! This is not stoicism. it would not be useful advice for if you were wrongfully convicted of a crime and thrown into solitary confinement... Then what good is it?
