4 Hour Battle With Cape Cod Giant Bluefin Tuna On Spinning Tackle Ends In Heartbreak

There is nothing more exciting than seeing 500 pound giant bluefin tuna going airborne and crashing on the surface, as they chase bait at max speed.
This was the exact scenario myself and MFCC member Aaron Permlutter found ourselves in last Sunday while fishing with Cullen from Cape Star Charters (www.capestarcharters.com)
Giant tuna were crashing the surface when we hooked a fish that was probably 95 inches long and potentially heavier than 500lbs. We battled the tuna for 4hrs on spinning tackle before losing it at the boat!

Ryan, (if you’re aware) what does Cullen like for line/leader on his tuna spinning setups?

I'm not sure what braid he's using, but for leader its a 12 foot 100lb wind-on leader by Basil.
Thanks for this great video!! I feel your disappointment. Here on the California coast we occasionally get an opportunity to catch a bluefin within 50 miles of shore. I have had several disappointments after almost 2 hours on the line. Hope you get one into the boat this year!

Do you guys use hollow core? I just spooled up my new saragosa with hollow ace 80, and no matter how I tried to spool it, it twisted pretty bad. I'm thinking about just using solid braid to 50 feet of hollow so I can splice in fluro
