Cape Cod Striper Fishing Tutorial: How to chum & live-line mackerel

Спорт

One of the most exciting and fun ways to catch striped bass on Cape Cod is to fish with live bait. In many situations is hard to beat the effectiveness of a live menhaden, scup, eel or mackerel.
Mackerel in particular have become one of my most favorite baits to fish with. Stripers on the Cape love live mackerel, but they also love fresh dead whole mackerel, as well as chunks of mackerel.
Mackerel themselves are also fun to catch! Sometimes when I take people fishing (especially people who are new to fishing) they enjoy catching the mackerel just as much as they enjoy catching the stripers.
In this video, which was filmed during the summer of 2018, I am fishing for striped bass in very shallow water. After anchoring up I began to chum the water, and within 30 minutes a school containing dozens of stripers appeared around the boat.
The action got pretty crazy for a wild, and I even had a HUGE seal grab one of my striper's right next to the boat!!!!

Great video. I learned a great deal. Didn’t have a much success this year. Other than being lucky. I’m new to boating just got a 17ft whaler. I’m up in Gloucester. I typically surf cast. You are anchored correct? Can you suggest any budget rod and reels for a beginner please (for boat)?

Thanks for watching Mat! Yes I am anchored in this video. For budget rods and reels, I would suggest you check out our Gear and Equipment forum on myfishingcapecod.com. Our members have contributed a lot of information about their favorite budget setups. One of my favorite budget spinning reels is the Penn Battle 5000 and one of my favorite budget conventional reels is the Penn Jigmaster. ✌️

Mackerel can be found all over Cape Cod, but the most likely places are Cape Cod Bay, Massachusetts Bay and east of Cape Cod. I usually catch them in 50-100 feet of water.

What are you using for the live well there? Keeping fresh water circulated is the key for live macs and I get tired of manually changing out the water.

It's a circular tank with a hole at the top for an intake hose (I use the wash down pump on my boat) and a hole at the bottom with a hose that allows water to flow out and over the stern of the boat. I keep it circulating the entire time. LMK if I can help answer any other questions. 👍🏻

Ry do you ever use treble hooks for live? Seems like quite a few got away and didn’t know if changing up the hooks would help (of course the circle is the best case scenario for the health of the release)

I always use circle hooks, unless I am trolling live mackerel. Starting next year in Massachusetts, circle hooks will be mandatory when fishing with bait.

I got that bait well as a Christmas gift from my parents when I was a teenager. Unfortunately I'm not sure where they got it from and there is no manufacturer label on the tank. Any circular tank will work for mackerel. The key is to use a round tank so they can swim in continuous circles. It's also important to have a constant intake of fresh sea water, and a constant outflow.

I agree that reeling (and not setting the hook) is best for circle hooks. However for stripers I feel letting him run for only 3-4 seconds is best. ✌🏻 Thanks for watching/commenting and tight lines!

In this video I was not using the rod butt cushion, because I had lost it somewhere on my boat, lol. You are correct that without the rod butt cushion, the rod is uncomfortable, but with the rod butt cushion, it fishes well.

Perfect example of why circle hooks suck.... 75% of the fish aren't hooked well or at all as seen here.. Now the rumor is Mass wants to adopt a law forcing all live bait anglers to use them.. Rookie fisherman it may be a good idea but seasoned guys are not gonna love it for sure.. Setting the hook and knowing when to do so is how it should be done.. What's next they are gonna stop the use of live bait all together?? Hog wash..

I like circle hooks, and I miss fish on regular style hooks as well. Circle hooks make releasing fish much easier when using live or chunk bait. At least in my opinion. I highly recommend the size 5/0 and size 6/0 Trokar Circle hooks when fishing striped bass ✌🏻

@@MyFishingCapeCod We aren't gonna have a choice here before much longer by the looks of it. Mass is likely gonna make it law when fishing with bait.. They seem to keep hammering the recreational guys. Meanwhile on a random commercial boat with tons of by-catch and seals eating 50lbs of fish per day on the Cape isn't even mentioned.. It's ridiculous.. I prefer standard hooks and always will. They are perfectly fine when the fisherman knows how to use them.. Like I said above they may have a purpose when it comes to the inexperienced anglers but they suck overall for the seasoned fisherman.. My opinion. It's gonna make fishing live bait such as live pogy's and mackerel and even eels harder to fish.. Chunked bait maybe not so much but I'd still prefer a standard hook.. Maine did this a few years back and there is zero proof it has helped and there is really no way to prove it's gonna make a difference. It's an impossible study to figure out the survival rates of released fish.. The bigger problem is fish handling.. People keeping fish out of the water to long and not reviving them properly.. A gut hooked fish can survive if the leader is cut short and the fish is revived properly.. I personally don't fish very often for stripers with bait anyhow. I got the salt water fly fishing bug a couple years back and don't use my conventional or surf-casting gear nearly as much anymore.. I just have a problem with the overall regulations that seem not to be coming to an end.. Before long it will be totally out of control.. The biggest issues aren't even talked about.. Like the by-catch problem and in my opinion the biggest issue the seals.. Another thing proven here in your video. The amount of fish they are eating annually destroys any numbers when we compare them to recreational fisherman.. 50lbs of fish per day on average they eat.. Now multiply that X 40,000 seals or more on Cape Cod.. Ya do that math.. We don't have a recreational fisherman problem in my opinion we have a seal and commercial by-catch problem far out weighing the lonely rec guys...
