I have also found that if you loosely wrap a black cloth around them before you set them in the sun, they will easily heat up even on a cold day.

Dollar Tree carries flavored creamer in miniature containers like the shelf-stable milk. I think they have vanilla and hazelnut. I found powdered half and half online, as well. The coffee needs all the good things. Do not mess with the coffee☕️☕️

Something to think about.... before you pack up your items, find the soonest expiry date from those items you're about to seal. Mark that date and the date you packed everything on your bag. Then pack up your bag and seal it. That way, you have an idea about the freshness of what you packed and what needs to be used first. It might not be so important with a big family that uses things quickly. But for just a single person or a couple, it might be helpful. Plus, even with kids, things might get moved around and misplaced accidentally, and a date might go by without being noticed. This will at least give you an idea of those items about to expire and need to be used first without breaking open a sealed bag. Plus, I liked the idea of adding a folded Ziploc bag. Brilliant 👏 👏 👏

Oh, my! So many choices! I could watch you put these together all day. I'm glad that y'all caught the mac and cheese bursting. That could have been a nasty surprise down the road! When I vacuum seal things like rice, flour, pasta, I cut a small slit in the original wrapping and when I vacuum seal, it also vacuum seals the food in the wrapper. That way I have the cooking instructions, nutritional info, etc. I know that wouldn't work on so many small items to be used over the period of a day, but thought I'd pass it along for larger items that you use your Food Saver for. And those heaters are so neat!

Great video with good ideas. I’m probably just going to use gallon freezer bags for mine and seal them with my vacuum sealer. I’m going to try to make them calorie dense with more protein. Other suggestions would be flavored whey protein powder to go in with the oatmeal and a dried fruit. Love the idea of a yogurt pack! Lunch would be ready rice + flavored tuna for a cheaper option, You could do ramen noodles + add low sodium soy sauce or teriyaki or orange sauce packets, a packet of peanut butter, chilli flakes and a packet of oil which you can get from restaurant supply stores. Club crackers with peanut butter and jelly or honey might be a good option for the kids. Granola bars tend to go rancid within a year. So I would probably opt for Rice Krispie bars. You could also make your own packets of seasoning using your sealer. I used to make tubes for sample when I sold Mary Kay cosmetics. Same idea. Even water could be used but you have to be careful sealing those.Gum, hard candy, tictacs, or fruit snacks might be good options since I am planning to make some for keeping in the car. No chocolate mess. I was wondering if you could use a tortilla warmer for heating the food. I also wonder if hand warmers/body warmers would work for heating up meals inside a bag that is used for baking potatoes in the microwave microwave. I might try that. I think another thing I might add is hand sanitizer wipes and a mask and a glow stick for light. So many possibilities. Thanks for sharing!

Good video! Make what your family will eat!! Add the creamer to the coco powder packet and just enough water to make "combat pudding". If you add the coffee you have mocha cream. IMHO, tasters choice is better than folgers, no creamer or sugar needed. But they both definitely taste better than, "Coffee, instant , type 2, vitamin C fortified." .

In Alaska, we have some hard tack crackers that we buy (really popular with Alaskan natives) and they are called Sailor Boy Pilot Bread. They are similar to the large round hard tack crackers in the MRE’s. They are not sold everywhere but I believe you can google where to buy them. There is another brand called “Future Essentials” but I’ve not tried those. Anyhow, the pilot bread is great with spam, tuna, peanut butter, etc… we take it everywhere up here!!

This is one of the better home made MRE videos because you've added fruits and veggies to the packs. They're essential, not just luxury. To cook, I have a 12 volt lunchbox my brother got me for my birthday. Works BEAUTIFULLY! I also found 12 volt coffee cups at DG one year, so I grabbed one for me and others for Christmas gifts. They work spectacular for hot drinks or soups. For my "kitchen/travel box" I include flatware (WM 4/$1, plastic plates/bowls/cups 50cents each), DT cutting board, can opener and knives and so on. Much easier than "darn I wish I'd remembered that [insert item here]. My DG has velveeta cheese pkts in single servings for $1- a great comfort addition to ramen.

Fantastic video, thank you for all of these great ideas! For my family I would use large sized freezer (thick) ziploc-type bags for the outside, and then for powdered milk or other loose items inside I would use the tiny snack sized ziploc-type bags. Here in AZ we can't keep anything like this in our cars or garages due to the desert heat, so these would just go in our emergency kits inside, or in a plastic tote on a shelf next to them. I would also stack water jugs next to them to be grabbed quickly! 🎒

I'm in Texas and these homemade MREs would have come in handy during that nasty deep freeze we had. News sources have said that it is quite possible that we might experience such a winter storm again this year because of El Nino. I hope our electric grid is better prepared this time. But I will definitely be making some of these, just in case. I like that you did not edit out the mishaps from your video because that keeps us from making the same mistakes. 😊❤

Loma Linda was/is Seventh Day Adventist owned, delicious stuff that confirmed meat eaters will like to eat. One consideration to SHTF foods is to pack what that person will want to eat! Panic situations are NOT the time to try new tastes. Make sure your people will eat Vienna sausages or deviled ham; many folks won't. If you have clean, cold water, you can divvy up a package of instant pudding and milk powder to make the appropriate needed. Add the right amount of water, seal the Ziploc bag, and squish. Let the bag sit in a cold place for a few minutes and the pudding can be squeezed out of the bag. Began making camping pudding like that in 1975 and it still gets talked about as the highlight of that trip, lol!

For a heater cozie, have you tried the hot or cold bags from the dollar store? I know they are great at keeping stuff cold. Might need to remove the plastic handles as they are quite large.

Swedish Wasa flat bread and rice cakes make good substitutes for bread. You can take out what you need from the big pack and vacuum seal them before putting them in the bigger bag with all the other items. What model is your foodsaver? I have an older model that's about ready for replacement and I really like yours.

Yes, we buy big boxes of them at Sam's club. I much prefer them over the powdered creamers. We also keep our leftover condiment packets. I really like the different side sauces from Chick-fil-A and they also have the ketchup dipping containers. Taco Bell has hot sauce in various degrees of heat. Those would go great with small snack bags of tortilla chips. You can use washed and rinsed empty otterpop tubes to fill with shelf stable nacho cheese sauce and seal them shut. So many possibilities to create your own custom MREs.

For someone who doesn't drink more than one thing, double up by giving another of the same thing, different flavor, because that person needs liquid too and you don't want to jip someone of liquids when you're in an emergency. One MRE that I had (professional, I bought it), had actual matches in it. Apparently for soldiers who smoked? It's always good to have a second source of light or heat. Chocolate candy is popular, as is instant coffee, but I don't care about coffee, give me decaf tea. Everyone is different, but they Kcal count on MRE's is about 2000 expected to last a whole day for a soldier on the march. There is M&M's, hard tack, peanut butter, cheese, etc. If you're really careful you can use the heaters to help warm your hands, but be extremely careful. They can also explode when they're wet, so watch the heaters NEVER drink the liquid out of a heater. The problem with cookies and crackers is that they can crumble. Maybe that's why MRE's have so much wax in the food? Now I remember, those light sticks, they may have one of those, I don't remember for sure.
