Another tip: When I lived in Somerset Ca not only did I go through the Caldor fire but we lived with power loss A LOT! Once we were without power in the snow for over a week. I sat directly in front of the fireplace wrapped in blankets to keep warm. I was stranded because of the snow and disabilities. I learned this trick so I wouldn't starve so if you need this tip use it. I have a bakers cooling rack with leg stands. I put into the side of my fireplace (LARGE FIREPLACE) and pushed some of the burning small pieces of wood under the rack. I sacrificed one of stainless steel soup pots for boiling snow for water (Not drinking water but well was electric pump and with no power meant no water) I also used some of my smaller stainless steel pans for cooking soups and ramens and hotdogs. I just put the pans on top of the rack. I even made coffee this way. After awhile my son and grandson made it through the snow and shoveled it. They brought me a Coleman stove and propane canisters which I put right in front of the fireplace so the gas went up the fireplace shoot instead of the house. This got me through one of worst times of my life. Hope it helps someone else👍

I like the idea of having a Coleman stove. But, if the sh*t really hits the fan in this country (as it is looking like it might, unfortunately), propane may become difficult to get. Are there ones that are dual fuel possible - can take wood or charcoal when propane is no longer available? Looks like I need to think about getting to a sporting goods store, like Dick’s or Cabela’s. Sorry to learn that you had to go thru that fire, but glad that you survived. Take care.

I am now 70 yrs old and raised a family on a strict budget. Keeping a well stocked pantry and sale buying in quantity, especially for meat was a must. We almost never ate "out" and I cooked three meals a day because my husband came home for lunch even after the children ate lunches at school. I recycled a great deal. I used the sacks bread came in to wrap sandwiches when I needed to and reused jars to store things. I had a small garden for herbs and some veggies in season. I did have a dehydrator and a large freezer. These may sound like old fashioned ways to some. I am so glad to see this up and coming generation, at least some of you, learning the real value of living this way!

Having a few bottles of UHT milk around were helpful with young children, though we’d get by with powdered now. I was even making perfect crepes with preferred milk and eggs for breakfast and the children had no idea they were any different.

Just because it's an emergency situation doesn't mean we can't have a sweet treat. All of these things can be easily squeezed into the tote and can be easily squeezed into the budget. Thanks for the tips. I'm going to make a few of these totes. Some for my family and some for neighbors that come to barter. Thanks again!!! God Bless!!!!

Hey hey, 😊 I do this! I started the weekly boxes during Covid shenanigans. I started the idea for my daughter with my grandgirls..with the basic idea of camping in the woods for a week..4 persons! And absolutely made her keep 4 boxes at minimum in case of emergency. Everything you would need for a week. Morning drinks, coffee, tea, hot cocoa w/milk sugar etc.. Breakfasts, lunches, snacks & dinners. With a bunch of the same ideas that you have in your boxes. Then I went back & made 16 more that I have in 1 specific closet..for myself or to possibly give out to those in need. Some minor variations..I add a bag of rice but also a box of instant rice..and I always add a container/bag of bullion cubes or packets and hot sauces.. Also some cornbread, water only mixes, biscuit & gravy mixes! Muffin mixes..quick cookie mixes. And I really like the Bear Creek soup packets! I put in the dry milk packets plus Evo milk also! Then we did a fam camping trip to test them..that's how I found my "gaps"! Every box I grab the $tree salt/pepper combo. We also use our homemade type meals in a jar that I mylar bag l. These would automatically be my grab & go 1st items, then my 5 gallon buckets.. My pantry is wonderful but..in case of emergency..would I "grab wisely"?? These are pre-prepared in a time of calm. I'm an empty nester, so a 4 person 1 week box for me could stretch to a month for a single person. So besides my pantry, I know that my boxes/closet would be a year food supply for me easily! Now, pretty much all of my family & friends have at least 4 boxes somewhere in their home!😊😊

What I remembered most was that it was mostly regular store bought dried food, easily prepared and precisely calculated with the correct number of caleries. I also remember making bread on the trail and eating canned chicken/tuna salad with crackers for lunch (2 cans for the six of us). This was the only canned food. The rest was repackaged in Ziplock bags. Good memories 😊 I would suggest adding Tang (one of the powdered drink mixes with the highest vitamin C) and single serving size powdered electrolyte (like powerade).

Today, I just came across your KZread channel. I am impressed. I have a few recommendations to add to your video. I am in my seventies, and will always remember the hurricanes when I was small child back on Long Island. The power was out, Mom couldn't use the electric stove, so she unfolded the metal Sterno burner, placed it on our fireplace hearth, inserted and lit the can. She was then able to heat up a pot of soup for lunch. As an adult, I live in California. I have always kept a folding Sterno burner and cans of Sterno fuel in the cupboard. Eventually, I added a butane burner and cans of butane. Both burners are compact and very lightweight. (Not the hassle one would have with a 20-pound propane bottle!) Besides regular canned goods, I always have a few cans of B&M canned brown bread in my pantry for emergencies and a few jars of peanut butter. The brown bread may make a good addition to the two week go-tote if there is room. I've always kept extra food for "just in case" situations, and it has carried us through emergencies including major earthquakes, tempoary physical disability and COVID shortages..

My pantry is vegan as well. Loma Linda and Asian markets have some very tasty canned seitan that’s great to have on hand for quick and easy protein to add to meals. We upped our grains, legumes, fruits, veggies, herbs and seasonings to allow for delicious meals. Lentils and quinoa are such excellent nutritional parts of our meals, they are easy to cook and take less time than other legumes and grains. We also store a lot of wheat berries, vital wheat gluten and both of those make excellent seitan (aka wheatmeat) to compliment meals. Finally lots of seeds to grow sprouts, micro greens and our indoor garden (kratkey method) for fresh foods to stave off scurvy. Wheat is an excellent grain to store, once sprouted it contains a huge amount of nutrients needed for health, then if you allow it to grow into “wheatgrass”, then it contains even more nutrients. Sprouting all our foods adds bulk and nutrients to our meals. We have indoor fruit trees (tangerines, limes, lemons, soon adding a banana tree), outdoors in containers (blueberries, raspberries and strawberries). I love how we eat and that we are able to provide fresh organic foods even in our condo.

That’s kind of you to consider beggars. Always hear preppers sharing what their gonna do for “me & my family” and how beggars aren’t welcome and they should have prepped their own. But that’s not realistic because so many people don’t believe they will ever be in a desperate situation..so beggars will be plentiful and Jesus would instruct us to be merciful to them.

I had a co worker who always did the chili over rice, a comfort food for her but I've never tried it. The knorr teriyaki noodle sound great and I've always seen that commercial of rice. Spam and mixed vegetables so I'm finally going to get what I need and make that! Such great ideas. Gonna pick up the cappuccino packs too! Finally someone who packed yummy meals! New subscriber! Thank you for the suggestions of a portable box but we would be the group that stays put if at all possible. I'm going to tell you right now...increase protein as much as possible because if you need this box, SHTF and that affects the body by severely increasing stress hormones. When that happens, you burn through the stored sugar in your liver and this means ppl are going to get HANGRY easier and/or get low blood sugar crabbiness. This is one reason why ppl crave "comfort foods". It can lead to increased tensions at every turn if starch is too high and protein/fats are too low. Keep sugars lower, increase fats, if possible and increase protein. Nobody needs crabbiness on top of am extreme situation.

Great video. Just want to add some comments/suggestions for beginners. Consider a situation where water & energy are in short supply, and you need to conserve these resources. You will need to concentrate on foods that do not waste water & require long cooking times that quickly burns through your fuels. 1. Quick oats are cooked in 1 minute or can be made into overnight oats. 2. White rice can cook in 15 - 20 minutes, just bring water to a boil and throw in rice 1 minute, then turn down to simmer for remainder of time. Brown rice takes too long & uses more fuel. 3. Instead of dried beans, use dried lentils. Soak lentils for 30 - 60 minutes until they double (or overnight), drain off dirty water & add clean water, bring to a boil for 3 - 5 minutes, then turn down to simmer for 15 - 20 minutes (desired doneness). 4. Try bulgar, which is cooked cracked wheat; just measure out into bowl, then add 1:1 ratio of boiled water to bulgar, cover with a lid or wrap and let it absorb about 15 - 20 minutes, then fluff with fork. 5. Try quick-cooking hot cereals like cream of wheat/rice or grits. 6. Ramen noodles are one way to have pasta, but here is also very thin quick-cooking pasta like Fideo in Hispanic section of some stores (packages are 7 ounces & cheap!). Thereare also 3-minute pastas, but they are not as easy to find. 6. For healthy fats, coconut oil or vacuum-sealed nuts (like Planters Peanuts, Blue Diamond Almonds, etc.). Try making homemade ghee (much cheaper than store bought, keeps for years). 7. It's better to buy canned meats/fish over canned soups, as a protein source, or buy canned beans instead of peas. In the last 2 - 4 years, many canned soups/stews have cut their protein grams per serving in half, most only have 6 - 8 grams of protein, which is like a large to jumbo egg equivalent. Would you willingly pay $2+ for 1 jumbo egg? Don't think so! 8. Canned vegetables & fruits are great for a tight budget, but if you can afford more, seriously consider freeze-dried (especially sweet peas, corn). Dehydrated recommendations are onions, carrot dices, tomato powder, potatoes (flakes/dices/slices/hashbrowns), mushrooms. 9. Look to powdered milk as a protein source too. Look for NIDO whole milk powder in your local grocers. Hope this helps.
