I would say it is a skill. I don't mind when people tell me I have an artistic talent because I know what they mean. I get annoyed when people tell me they can never do cuz its hard. Like duh its hard. Its hard for me. Im no where near where I want to be. It takes years of hard patient work and studying. It doesn't come easy.

I dont think anyone is born with artistic abilities but they are born more attracted to art if that makes sense and I feel of your more attracted to it you focus more on details and how the art work is made which can make other people think they're born with artistic abilities

personally, I find this annoying trend in artists where artists say "everyone has their own opinion" but also immediately shoots down people that have any other different opinion than their own, it's like you might as well not say anything otherwise that artist will send their army of followers to attack you/the others that agree with you, and I feel like it just creates a hateful community

underselling their work. it only feeds the expectations of the people to pay you way less, to the point where is really difficult to make a living out of it. they just say "i know somebody that will do it for less"

JOEL MARTINEZ I had basically approached someone online about a piece I was working on asking if they would be interested in buying it since it was a type of fan art from a movie he liked. he wasn't interested in that but asked if I would paint a cover for his book, I agreed and went into details of what size canvas and such I mentioned I wouldn't charge a large amount but would need something for it, he had agreed but when I was half way done he asked me to change it and then said something about taking my time cause I was doing it for free, I never said I was doing it for free so I discontinued the work , my work is worth something and I wont accept less anymore

I agree! I've actually done that myself. Not that I'm an professional artist or anything but I made a separate art account apart from my personal one. I just feel like there are separate audiences for each and it's just an easier way to organize your posts.

It DOES though. I wasted so much of my life on those stupid sites. KZread can be pretty bad too so I have to really curate the content I consume on here as well.

I can't stand artists that practice #1. I immediately unfollow once their posts start straying away from their art. I understand a selfie or meal photo every once in a while, but once it starts turning into a wall of just the artist's face it's time to go.

Did you guys know that people don’t owe you shit. How entitled do you have to be to complain about people’s ig pages. Newsflash their page isn’t a portfolio.

Like in art I love free expression if they want to post what they are eating, or success, it's cool it's part of their life, they are free to post whatever they want if you don't like that you can move on to the next artist. There are worst things like retweeting futanari, but like I said you are free to move on. On the internet, you can find the people most fitting for you. Art is sitting on a chair for hours with back pain and tired eyes, if sharing a fancy plate of food make them happy....let them have that 5 minutes of glory....they deserve it. By the way lovely piece and great video.

Sure, you're free to share whatever you like, it is your blog after all. However, Its really annoying to follow a art blog, that actively says they are a art blog, but provide little art to their following. If I follow a chef to get cooking tips and meal prep ideas, I don't want them to suddenly start posting their work out routine. Its not what I followed for. I can most certainly unfollow, but that's quite sad when they say their one thing and produce little of that same thing.

I don't think its that he thinks they shouldn't post their life or anything. I think is more that it is suppose to be an "art profile" but they are posting their vacations. I think that people should have more than one account. If you claim to be an artist and want appreciation for your work make an account specifically for your art. I follow people for tips and inspirations for my work. I don't want to see you post your coffee. Im here for art. I will unfollow. Its plain and simple. Its annoying when you put artist in your bio or see someone "for more art follow my instagram" only to see nothing but selfies. Like why

Most annoying artist habits: 1) Sharing their extraordinary life. 2) Red dot mania. 3) Lack of interaction between artists and their audience. 4) The secrecy and lack of transparency in the art world. Ps: Loved the video a lot. A little confession about Number 2 that hopefully helps people out. I remember showing work in London during the Frieze art week several years ago and before I even sold anything I put that red dot next to two of my paintings to influence potential buyers. It's something that a lot of artists do and doesn't only happen with beginner artists but is a trick that is used crossing all levels of artists in different forms. Damien Hirst might not put a red dot on it (except for his dot paintings) but he 'probably' bought directly or indirectly some of his own works on auction to influence the prize. And the White Cube will repeatedly say there are no works available when there clearly are works available. (creating a 'fake' sense of scarcity and a real waiting list by doing so) They all have different forms and ways of using the red dot tactic.

While it might help in that instance it ultimately sends the wrong signals... to galleries who start showing your work wrongly thinking you’re hot to younger generations emulating your style thinking it’s highly sellable... and all that created by the illusion of a red dot

nice video, Personnaly something that starts to annoying me is when I met new people and then they learn that I make art and are really impressed of my work, so tell it to me 1 time, and I really thank them for the compliment, but then it's always the same speech like : u're so lucky to know how to draw, I wish I knew too, and it feels like I didn't work to achieve this level. Like they don't realise that I spent hours on drawing to progress... So I always have to tell them that I worked for that and all that stuff... And I wish people knew that the first time so they make compliments on all the time that I spend on it...^^

The hidden artist. The other day I was looking at an artist site with what appeared to be a attractive young artist with amazing skills. The problem came in when I looked at a photo of the artist's hand painting one of the portraits the attractive young artist (AYA) had been posing in front of. It was the hand of an old man. I found a picture of the AYA holding the same brush and it definitely wasn't the same hand. I get the marketing value of a young person who looks attractive with skills beyond their years. However, what happens when someone wants a live demonstration of the artist in action?

I did call an artist out for stealing someone else’s art. I asked them to demonstrate it but they was very defensive and wouldn’t. To be fair I didn’t expect them to. I wanted to ruffle their feathers. Poke a stick in the fire. Let them know we are watching.

I feel like it's kind of unfair to judge/gatekeep what other people post online. Though this does not at all mean that your opinion is not valid and not worth sharing, the opposite in fact. It's just that I happen to disagree with the first two points. I personally do not like the idea of telling someone they shouldn't share their life just because they are wealthy or successful (or even if that is the impression one gets from the content they've produced). Being humble is great, but it's just not everyone's natural default, some people have egos. Some people also, just want to share the good parts of their lives and are oblivious to the image they may be putting out to their followers. That's just life and it's ok. Some people get excited when they make a sale, good for them. I would suggest that if anyone doesn't like someone's content to not follow it instead of trying to police, complain, etc their content. Though, of course, you can do as you wish. I honestly just don't see the point in caring about any of this, it seems like a waste of time and energy. If it was me I'd sit down and try to think about why those things bother me, when it comes down to it you can only control yourself, your actions, and your response to things. It seems like more of a personal issue to me, which is fine. The things I do agree with is professional interactions with your followers and secrecy or lack of transparency. They are important to a point, I have mixed feelings about sharing the amount of money you make as it's always been seen as rude to discuss earnings, but I do understand why it could be seen as a lack of transparency or a problematic issue. Times are also changing as technology changes. It's important to remain adaptable and open to change.

I agree. I personally like seeing the behind of the scenes' of an artist's life. Their work ethic, the places they go to, the things they find inspiring, the movies they watch etc. People assume that art exists in a vacuum but it's not, and it's the result of all those things. So there should be nothing wrong with showing it;; I feel people who find those things bothersome must be extremely boring to be with.

I very much aggree with you. None of us can really be responsible for someone elses emotional reactions to what we create and share. If we were, we wouldnt get anything done. If I get an emotional reaction to a particular post, the feelings are rooted in my own life experiences up until that point and must be dealt with by me, no one else. The first thing is to unfollow, the second thing is to get to the bottom of why I react like that and deal with it if it is a problem. My feelings are my responsibility. I think the word “responsibility” is very much the key to happiness:)

Because nothing is transparant, no one tells, I have no idea about prices, galleries, how much time something took etc, the situation; sometimes it's so helpful to see some artist just straightout work on commissions for 7 hours, because that shows the reality, and how they feel about it because no one talks about prices, all the prices are all over the place, really

The most annoying thing for me is the idea that using an art supply comes with rules; no white in watercolor, never use cheap art supplies, etc. I think it is your art, do whatever you want, however you want it to do. And the artists who create art or content because their followers want to see it and not because it is something that they loved to create and can relate to. Loved the video and the piece you made!!!!

Thank you for bringing light and voice to some of these issues . I personally feel so isolated at times, I feel like artists used to be given a pass to be introverted and imperfect (physically) now I feel to be successful you have to a Victoria secret model, at some fancy gala with a 1000 name-drops. What happened to just making good art? I’ll never be the popular cheerleader type... anyways a bit of feminine perspective. Thanks again, your work inspires me as do your opinions.

Such beautiful piece of art! 💙 I strongly believe that the habits that you explained are not only in this particular niche (art and artists). As an entrepreneur I see the same thing in entrepreneurs and the reason behind it is that most of them are not comfortable sharing how much their companies make, how much they get paid, but they make sure to present a successful entrepreneur on social media getting drinks, eating out all the time etc etc. The problem is in ourselves and why we don't create a real connection with like-minded people. It all seems just so typical and sad, but we also question why so many people are facing depression and anxiety...

I'm not quite sure if I understood some of the points raised in his video. When he is talking about selling and showing the red dot, is he "only" talking about on an artist's website or he is talking about it being on Facebook (if that's possible) for example? I just started my own website not long ago, so I am new to the whole 'thing'. Is he saying if I have a piece sold I should not have the painting still displayed on my art website with a red dot but remove the painting altogether because it has been sold? I don't have much paintings at the moment and if I sold a painting I would still want to have it displayed on my website - even though it was sold - because that painting still shows what I am capable of in painting. If I removed the painting because it was sold, and it was one of my best works, then I would still want it on my website just so the viewer has an idea of what I am capable of in terms of style and technique. With regard to income. So for example, you wouldn't mind if I asked you how much money you earn and if you could show me your account details?

You made excellent points, Alpay! I am from the old school before social media. Professional illustrator/ artist 35 plus years ago. Way before social media but artist social media was done with articles in magazines, news etc. You get the point. The same aspects still stand. Art is hard work and practice. It also takes business sense which is something a lot of colleges and universities do not to teach in the USA. Art is a business and an artist has to be professional at all times. You have to sell and promote yourself. You have to develop your own style and do something that no one else is doing. (Stand Out! Get Noticed!) As an illustrator you have a dead line and you work under pressure to get it right. I really did not do the gallery gig and it never really interested me that much. Especially, when you live is a small central eastern Montana town that is stuck in nowhere land. Yes, you can become an artist with those kinds of odds against you. The most important part is to keep learning and teaching others. Once you think you are the greatest artist around your art goes down because you are not open to new ideas. Important concept to remember so never go there. Best advice to newbies, get into something that pays the beans and the rent then work on your art on the side and keep improving and learning, then maybe you can make it a full time gig once you get established. I worked as an elementary teacher and a registered nurse on the side as well as an artist and never regretted it. I am 67 years old and still working as an artist and teaching others how to make and enjoy art. Just get out there and do it.

The very first point you brought up was the one I was hoping to see in this video. Besides always posting their food and beautifully decorated studios all the time and travel photos. A TON of them, are always making "Moving to new apt/studio/house" vlogs. A lot of really quirky, friendly artists that are popular on yt and social media can have like 4+ videos A YEAR on them moving to a new place. There is even one artist I know of who is popular on Insta, YT, Tumblr, Deviantart who made christmas vlogs of her literally going out to eat or going home shopping or shopping for parties to make for her and her friends and then her and her family every day. Literally every day in december of 2018 was her spending a lot of money and calling it a vlog while talking about all the sponsorships she gets and mentioning secret projects but not giving any details on it. Just basically letting you know for half an hour or more that she's busy, can't say everything she's busy with, but watch her spend money at ikea and at restaurants every day for a month. A lot of these artists seem like really decent people, but they give artists hard expectations. I say hard because it's not impossible to make a living on art, it's just hard to make a living and keep making a living your whole life off of art. They need to be more thoughtful and learn to keep some things private. I also don't like artists who don't respond to their following. They tend to have a huge popularity though because I assume people like the enigma, It's almost always the artists who make a lot of money on patreon or who are super busy with great opportunities but they can't take even 5 minutes of their social media time to respond to fans but have the audacity to say they love their fans and are thankful for fans in a lot of their picture descriptions. Their fans are like their own communities and the artist is just an idol they worship. But for some reason the fans seem to think that the artist really connects with them. I also don't like artists who are sellouts. Who use stuff like skillshare/fiverr/stock sites, etc and undercharge their really expensive, quality work. That sets a bad example for the industry and over the years art that used to cost like 700usd would now cost like 200usd to go on a cover of a mag or book or something. I understand that its hard to sell and it's easier to sell out, But if you're gonna sell out, at least tell other artists that you are and stop making it seem like you're making an easy living. You're overworking yourself for crap pay just to get paid and you still have as much competition as you would if you weren't being cheap. Don't encourage art to be ripped off, encourage people away from it and let them know its a last resort. I just needed to let that out though cause I get so angry with successful artists who are social media famous in the art world. They always seem to be against the average artists, and don't keep it real.

First of all, that artist was obviously really happy and posted it because she has money to spend, and excuse her for enjoying herself during holiday and finally taking a break, and while youre at it why don't you demand an apology for them "selling out", she does it to support herself and make the art pieces that you watch..... I'm sorry that youre too entitled to realize the artist can enjoy herself,treat herself and partner up with companies that will promote her, send her products for free, and help her fund her videos *drops microphone*

we post our sold pieces because we sell on the internet and we like to remind possible clients that some of that pieces are taken and no longer available

I too am annoyed by these things, but unfortunately, numbers 1 and 2 have become common because of the nature of algorithms. (I worked with many professionals to handle social media for my businesses and I learned a few things about why this stuff happens) #1 (people showing their travels and restaurant visits) is common because people tend to give more positive feedback when posts exhibit luxurious activities. More comments/likes means more exposure and more rewards from the algorithm. #2 (people showing tons of sold pieces) is the result of the algorithm requiring a constant stream of content. Not having a constant stream of posts will cause one to drop in the algorithms. This means they constantly have to be posting, and often times that means they effectively run out of content and must post everything they have (including sold pieces). This also affects #1. I find it equally as annoying, but I wouldn't blame the artists themselves. They're just trying to maintain relevance on platforms that disincentivize quality content, and rather incentivize things that appeal to the lowest common denominators.

Loved the video so much. Finally some real stuff and not just the same thing you find on the big traffic art blogs who seem to have predominantly basic info... Not sure if No. 2 is a bad thing but it's most definitely annoying. And I've had my fair share of that myself as well. I never did it on social media. But in real life during an art fair or something I'm definitely going to put a red dot (sometimes even before a work is sold) No. 4: Depending on your goals as an artist, it's often times a sales tactic. Creating scarcity is one of the main sales tactics in the art world and it has many forms. A lot of gallery owners don't like that people really meet the artists and build deep connections with them, especially in the high end art market, because meeting your idols is paired with realizing their just human beings and not the 'gods' the collectors assumed they where. And it's hard to pay a couple of millions for a painting when you're not impressed by the person who painted it after meeting them. I believe a lot of artists unconsciously or consciously copy that behavior from higher up, even when they are just starting out and don't have any benefit from those types of sales tactics. No. 1 is not going away anytime soon. There are some galleries who have played or are playing the following tactic out. Paying a lot of money to their artists, money that can only be used for fancy stuff so that they can show a fancy lifestyle in mansions with expensive objects etc. where the lifestyle becomes marketing. A lot of times collectors unconsciously think that they are coming closer to the type of lifestyle that is portrayed by buying the work... Buying the work becomes buying the lifestyle and the dream rather then interest in art. Ps: I definitely have to stop writing now and get back to work haha. Again I loved the video a lot... Some very true and important points. Loved it the whole way through. One of the few art channels on KZread I actually take time for to watch completely.

I really agree with #1 because it doesn’t just apply to artist. It’s ANYONE on the internet. Ironically I was trying to explain this to one of my online friends who feels like she has to DM me all the cool things that happen to her, and it was fine at first but you know...it gets irritating after a while 😅 unfortunately I don’t think she got the message even after I tried explaining but oh well lol🤷🏻‍♀️ I love the paint as always! You videos never fail to motivate me and put me in a good mood 😊💛

I’m so glad you mentioned the first point because you are so right about it. No matter how unfortunate you think you are, you will always have something that someone else doesn’t, so remember to be grateful.. and humble!

Your skin tones are gorgeous. I do wish you'd make a tutorial showing us how you measure and mix your paints for skin tones. The color and ratios are of great importance, and my hue is often wonky.

Excellent video! LOVE that you paint while you speak! I can think of so many more annoying artist habits! Especially artists who complain about not making any money at their art, but when you ask how much time they're actually spending painting, it's very low... just a few hours a week, always with many excuses why they have no time to create. Also, they say they have no time to overcome obscurity and get their work 'out there'.

I would just like to say that your videos inspired me to go back to traditional paint after almost 10 years doing digital art. It feels refreshing. Thank you so much! :-)

It's so good listening to you :). I watch and listen to your videos to inspire myself. And to learn more about art community. I do not know much about online presence as an artist and you do give a glympse of this knowlage to people like me. I personally love seeing what my favorite artist are up to in their life. It’s a new era and times are changing. Posting and sharing your life through social media can be a beautiful thing. Some artist become not only just artist but “influencers” through social media. It shouldn’t be frowned upon. If you think it’s annoying there is an unfollow button. Love your content but to me personally you come off a little bit bitter in this video. A 5th point could be added, “Artist who judge what other artist share.” Hope this doesn’t come off as harsh. But to me sharing your life doesn’t come off as boastful, it’s quiet normal in life today, if an artist has found joy in interacting with followers through a more lifestyle oriented post, what’s the harm in that? it’s not boastful unless they’re the Kardashian’s family level of showing off. Thanks again for the content :)

Unfortunately, you misunderstood the point I was making... or I did a poor job of communicating. I don't mind people sharing their lives, to the contrary I think it's great. I'm not talking about people who share their lives...I'm not even talking about showing off, I'm talking about people who orchestrate social media in a way to look successful and have a certain lifestyle. Apart from the fact that I just suggested to be a bit more humble and compassionate (I don't see how someone possibly can think that that comes off as bitter sounding), this behavior has some real-world negative effects on the art industry... which can't be in anyone's interest. Hope this clears things up a bit... and thanks for watching my videos.

I’m generally not interested in the artist’s personal life, which is why I don’t look at Instagram stories. Granted, I share a little bit in my posts, ie what’s related to art, but I’m also trying to be mindful of it. 9/10 times I’m following for the art, not their dog and their husband.

Hi Alpay, I love your videos. I agree with you fourth point especially. With artists having secrecy or a lack of transparency between each other it really does create barriers between people who should have more sharing, teamwork and community. I also find it frustrating when getting together with other artists and asking them questions but receiving very shallow responses. As an artist I like to share as much as possible and I appreciate it when other artists share freely with me. Thanks for the amazing videos!

Alpe, I really enjoy your videos. While your work itself is magnificent, and I really enjoy watching you paint, your honest and transparent approach to the art world is refreshing. I have struggled against so many of the challenges, struggles, and even delusions, that you speak so bluntly about. It reminds me that not only is what I am going through as an artist totally normal, but it is something that even the best artists experience too. Things like "the rollercoaster" or the fact that passion is overrated, or that other artists conveying lifestyles and ease that do not reflect reality can be very discouraging. Hearing you talk about those things took a wrecking ball to a lot of the excuses that I have been making to myself. I am now feeling empowered to take a plunge and do some art for the right reasons, and hopefully enjoy the process. In this world where it seems like your digital production skills, your technology and your marketing skills are more important than your art itself, it is encouraging to be reminded about what it is all really about: Being honest with yourself, being who you are, and letting your art be a reflection of that.

I see why this is a favorite of yours. Its a great painting, but its also a great composition. My eye goes left to the yellow and then right to yellow and then to her gaze. And then it repeats, right, left, middle. Creating movement. Well done!

Hi Alpay thanks for yet another great video I am only a hobby artist at this stage, still trying out media and art style I like so I guess none of this really applies to me yet however I work at art as much as I can to hopefully one day have a go at being a professional artist, so your topic was interesting. I agree wholeheartedly with 2,3, & 4 but the first one has a grey area in my opinion. I think many people following artists today like to see some of their personal life/behind the scenes stuff because it promotes a sense of connection. I think this comes with the territory of social media including KZread. I follow many artists on here and also on their instagram accounts, and about 6 out of that long list I really enjoy listening to, watching their videos, learning from them, become inspired by them and enjoy seeing aspects of their life outside of art, for example if I remember rightly yourself and Lioba went on a holiday to Greece recently (hope I got that right) and I loved watching her video etc of you both. These sorts of posts remind people like me that while we look up to you for your knowledge and art skills with high esteem , you're still just an average Joe who is lucky enough to have holidays etc like you do sometimes. For myself it doesn't make me envious or feel bad in any way, if people feel that way then I think they have an issue with their feelings not the out of the studio content you're sharing, although of course it is important not to over do that sharing then that wouldn't be great.

I love your content especially about creators reacting to their fans comments. It really makes us feel like we matter when we get a response in some way after we take the time to leave a comment and for me at least it makes me want to continue following their work. As a new artist I cant tell you how many artist I look up to that Ive reached out to for various advice, that simply beat around the bush, give me a real BS answer like 'i wish I had time to answer this for you but its just too complicated' ....OR my favorite...never answer after reading the message (we do see that)... Its disheartening. And makes me want to be a better human to my community of followers...all 218 of them lol. 😊 I love your channel btw. I wish I had the money to join your patreon..but artist struggles lol. I also wish you could be my mentor...I just adore your work. Keep it up! And keep being real!

At last! Facial tones that do not resemble old pink plastic! Very refreshing. I have been been an artist all of my life and have taught many a student color theory, especially when addressing skin tones. Oil paint on linen is my preferred medium, although for the last several decades, most of my clients have requested their portraits to be engraved on black granite. Now it is the time to produce a body of work in oils just for myself, but it will definitely not contain any “pink plastic”. Please keep displaying the finesse you have achieved with painting skin tones. It is indeed refreshing.

I noticed that some artists come up with these "rules" that every artist needs to follow, since it's coming up, the best example would be inktober. Some say you have to use black ink only or your breaking the rules if you use a marker or god forbid you use color. That's one thing I find annoying, "art rules". If I want to make a painting with a toothbrush, no one is going to stop me. As long as I enjoy the process of creating and I like how it turned out, who cares.

It's good to comment on other artists posts and support each other, give critiques where appropriate and share issues and help one another get through them, iv'e recently joined a discord server where everyone can help each other improve by asking for help when they are struggling and sharing tutorials that they find, i'm currently doing my first collaboration drawing with someone and we are going to improve on our strengths and weaknesses together to make the drawing, it's good fun :)

I honestly should post more of my work :( Sometimes I just take too many breaks. I lose my muse and It's just so hard with a family. I love your work and am working on my second oil portrait. Well more like a character portrait. I am used to pastels and figured why not try oil. Just today I beat myself up about all of this and finding your video has given me some comfort so thank you :)
