There were certainly some very stressful times, and times of dealing with some difficult people, but overall, I loved it!! Working on that level of technology was very gratifying. I do miss it, but I was able to retire at 54 years old, so I'll take retirement over a job any day!! 🙂

My mom's second husband worked for GE on the Aegis system. I went to Bath and Pascagoula a number of times with him. That launch process at Bath, with workers driving wedges under the ship, is pretty damn impressive.

Complete gun overhaul. Pulling everything, including the breach bolts, and greasing the fuck out of it all. The lock wire tool is much appreciated during this maintenance, though.

when there are enemy aircraft and missiles inbound on a known stable trajectory at your vessel you dang well better be able to put out a stream of bullets aimed and timed to stop them. That machine gun fails to stop the threat means a sunken ship and a large number of dead sailors. jus sayn

Actually it's designed for, but not only, firing against incoming missiles at multiple times the speed of sound. Gotta take it down otherwise everybody in the ship is in a bad scenario.

Lol this is the small version using the Vulcan cannon, which is the gun on the F-16 and F/A-18, the British navy uses the GAU-8 Avenger which is the gun found on the A-10

There's a land version of this called the C-RAM for taking out rockets and artillery/mortars. It uses tracer ammunition that self-destructs so it doesnt rain down bullets on unintended targets

This is an impressive weapon, the Army has a land-based model protecting bases in the middle east when I was there. You always knew when they ran a scheduled or unscheduled firing.

I was a SPY-1 radar system engineer for Lockheed Martin, and during sea trials out of Bath Iron Works, we had to test all the weapons systems. We called this the "abandon ship" alarm.

There were certainly some very stressful times, and times of dealing with some difficult people, but overall, I loved it!! Working on that level of technology was very gratifying. I do miss it, but I was able to retire at 54 years old, so I'll take retirement over a job any day!! 🙂

My mom's second husband worked for GE on the Aegis system. I went to Bath and Pascagoula a number of times with him. That launch process at Bath, with workers driving wedges under the ship, is pretty damn impressive.

Complete gun overhaul. Pulling everything, including the breach bolts, and greasing the fuck out of it all. The lock wire tool is much appreciated during this maintenance, though.

when there are enemy aircraft and missiles inbound on a known stable trajectory at your vessel you dang well better be able to put out a stream of bullets aimed and timed to stop them. That machine gun fails to stop the threat means a sunken ship and a large number of dead sailors. jus sayn

Actually it's designed for, but not only, firing against incoming missiles at multiple times the speed of sound. Gotta take it down otherwise everybody in the ship is in a bad scenario.
Ammo guy: "How many rounds are you signing for today" Supply guy: "Yes."
I used to live just inside the skin of the ship from one of these. Live fire exercises was always a good time. Military grade tinnitus you can count on. 😂

Lol this is the small version using the Vulcan cannon, which is the gun on the F-16 and F/A-18, the British navy uses the GAU-8 Avenger which is the gun found on the A-10

There's a land version of this called the C-RAM for taking out rockets and artillery/mortars. It uses tracer ammunition that self-destructs so it doesnt rain down bullets on unintended targets
