yes, as 3 AMF are utilised, with 2 of them occupying the half space, meaning the full backs needed to have offensive quality to overlap the flanks.

Surprised there was no mention of Mourinho, when he arrived in the Premier League and introduced everyone to the 4-2-3-1 it was the first time in Premier League history a team had won the league without 2 up front, it essentially killed England’s obsession with 4-4-2 and brought the country into the modern age. Even SAF had to bring in Carlos Quieroz to take over the tactical side of things and they went on to have possibly their greatest ever period 07-10. All thanks to Jose’s 4-2-3-1.

@@marvelousle3022with a 4-3-3 you have 3 CM’s who play interchangeably, Mous 4-2-3-1 had 2 clear DM’s in Makelele and Essien and then a clear AM in Lampard who at times was so advanced he’d virtually be playing second striker off Drogba.

Mou' Chels formation was 4-3-3 with flat 3 midfield which would quickly turn into 4-1-2-3 with Makelele or John Obi Mikel as single pivot once they were in offensive transition (since they were a counterattack team). Essien was always involved in the attack rather than sitting back as part of rest-defence. It was actually Benitez's Liverpool that introduced the Prem to the true 4231 with true attacking midfielder, since previously similar formation had been implemented by United and Arsenal but their number 10s were more of a second striker dropping back (Cantona and Bergkamp) rather than true midfielder.

@@marvelousle3022 When Mou first arrived, he used 4-2-3-1 with Eidur Gundjohnsen playing behind Drogba. I think it was his 2nd season where he started using 4-3-3. Either way, both have tactical advantage over English teams 4-4-2 at that time. Once other English teams adapted, they start having more success in European competitions

IMO the single biggest inherent weakness of 4231 is that you end up only attacking with 4 players, especially in transition. Against another 4231 that means you'll be attacking with 4 against 6. Mourinho's teams could be very stuffy because of this. Managers know this of course, so the double pivot is usually more of a 6 and an 8 than two 6s.

You were able to see this lone striker disadvantage with Bayern in the UCL. Lewandowski always ghosted when the opponents were very good.

4-2-3-1 is a very versatile because you can go from 4-3-3 when you have the possession to 4-5-1 when you're pinned ro even 4-2-4 in a counterattack mode

I used this as a core formation in my Football Manager Career and won Indonesian League title in 5 consecutive seasons

that team was dogshit and we lost all the time against Barcelona, no one remembers that team but Mourinho and Ronaldo fan boys, they only won a bloody league and we just choked on champions league semi finals for 3 years

Remember when everyone played with this formation and the classic no. 10s were so popular

attacking down the flanks and playing early cross with this formation is sooooo good in-game

I always use this in FIFA since last few years. 4-2-3-1 narrow but LM and RM pushed forward to act as LW and RW and the middle player to act as CAM. Really good formation for link up plays. Gotta have good CDM who can cut passing lines and win the balls for you in midfield.

Only works if your two wide attacking midfielders are dynamic and hard working. And provide support to the lone striker. Otherwise I'd rather have the straight 4-3-3.

I used this formation in my Fifa career mode, always make sure that your fullbacks stay back while attacking, use 1 2s between one pf the fullbacks and wingers, the player in CAM should be your best player in the squad, alternatively you can use a 4-1-4-1 with a back four, a CDM thats really good in defense and attack, with two cams and two wingers, this gets rid of the issue of the wingers ever not getting wide enough however if your CDM is trash it can be easy to beat with 3 in midfield

Depends how the formation is played, if it is played with two defensive midfielders, many times the left and right mid need to come narrow to give the attacking mid a passing option. Just like how the forward can struggle as a lone forward, so can the attacking mid. However this is a very versatile formation, fullbacks can push up, a mid can drop into the backline. Or a mid can push up to create a numerical advantage leaving one defensive mid to cover.

The isolated striker problem can only be fixed by the top of her top strikers. Someone imposing like Haaland, or a prime Messi who could drop in and dribble past 3 players and then tuck it into the corner. Unfortunately these players are a once in a generation so you definitely have to find wingers that work well.

Works incredibly well if your "2" is tactically capable. With Southgate's England, the 2 doesn't absolutely nothing and would be better served as a 1 to allow for more creativity up front.

@@namkhanhnguyen10 Right👍🏻. But depends on the playstyle as well. I prefer quick attacks and movements (very similar to gegen/counter pressing) over complete possession control. But yeah, 4-3-3 also has the added advantage of being very fluid and flexible. It can very well shift to any formation depending on the phase of play

three central midfielders must be truly quality players who set the tempo of the game in attack and defense... and not all coaches can be successful with this formation 😅

Actually when a sideback attacks the other HAVE TO remain back, and usually one of the low midfielder too
