3rd Gen 4Runner Tundra Brake Upgrade

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

3rd gen 4Runner Tundra brake upgrade. In this video I show you how I performed Toyota Tundra disc brake upgrade on my 3rd gen Toyota 4Runner. The upgrade to the Tundra brake caliper and rotor gives you a few distinct upgrades and improvements.
-The rotor is much thicker and has almost double the amount of internal cooling fins, this will allow it to dissipate more heat and help reduce brake fade. This will likely be evident if you regularly drive down steep grades or tow. Even with utilizing engine braking by using lower gears, you still have to use the brakes, and on a long descent, your brakes are going to heat up and have a lack in performance and increased stopping distance. If they get hot enough, they will fade. The caliper is larger with a higher fluid capacity and accepts a larger brake pad so you get increased stopping power.
Tundra Caliper Choices
13WE - 199mm Caliper
13WL - 231mm Caliper

Great video Kelly! Just ordered the parts to do the upgrade and just want to mention for others to order calipers for the 2001 Tundra which are the 13WE 199mm and 2005 tundra are the 13WL 231mm. Disappointed that they arrived without the bleed valves and other port plugs which prevent dirt and other debris getting in during shipping. Cost for the calipers was 179 cdn (each), 135 for each rotor and 110 for the pads. My Hilux Surf is nearly complete foe the journey south to Mexico, Guatemala and Belize. Thanks again for your videos and ideas👍🍻

Another great video! This looks like something I could totally do now (my brakes aren't quite there yet, but I sure could have used this upgrade coming down a major hill at a ski resort last winter). Great step by step detail (and I appreciate you speeding up some of the parts while still showing enough to see the necessary steps). Thank you!

I did this to my 2002. I went with 231mm from a 2005 Tundra 4x4 V8. Both my stock wheels and a set of TDR 16s off a 2021 Tacoma fit without any issues. I think the peace of mind on mountain roads is worth it.

Great How-To!! My 3rd gen 4Runner is an Overland build with RTT, steel bumpers and winch, so I did this upgrade and went with the larger 13WL calipers and rotors. I'm running 16 inch Pro Comp 69 Series wheels and they fit fine. I also upgraded the rear brakes with Tundra rear brake cylinders. The Tundra rear cylinders are a full 1 inch vs 15/16.

Hello gen 3 people, I have a 98' 4runner SR5, V6 2 W.D. with stock 15" rims, will the 199mm caliper fit all stock 15' rims ? I wish I could afford 17' rims and go for the 231mm big boys, but anything is better than 98' OEM brakes. Also I adjusted the rear drums and they offer only Flintstone stopping power without Fred's calloused feet.
