3Doodler 2.0 problem (2015)
UPDATE JULY 25, 2015: 3Doodle came through with their replacement pen. I reported the problem and sent a link to this video on June 6, the problem was acknowledge by customer service on June 8, a new pen shipped out of Hong Kong about 5 weeks after than on July 17. It arrived at my address in the USA on July 24. This one works as advertised. I've doodled a bit and made the shapes that you can see in the picture at the link: . 2D doodling is a lot easier than 3D doodling but I'm sure practice makes perfect - I have to say that it is a lot of fun. I have to hand the pen over to my daughter now, who paid for it. I'll thank Sean and colleagues at 3Doodle for coming through with the promised replacement pen but I would advise them to set up some kind of system through which customers can check if their pen is part of the batch with known software flaw that cause my pen to malfunction so those customers can report it and get a working replacement pen as I did. FYI: the serial number on my pen that has the known software flaw is 3DOOD-V2-002-43658-2. The serial number of the new one that I receive that works great is 3DOOD-V2-004-05216-3.
UPDATE JULY 1, 2015: 3Doodler customer support e-mailed me that -after seeing the video- it "seems to be the result of a known software flaw which the newer pens have corrected". They promised to send me a new one. I'll post another message here when I get it.
POST JUNE 6, 2015: I posted this video so that I could show the people at 3Doodler what the problem is. I've submitted a link to this video including a description of the problem to customer service and received a response within a day saying that they want to bring my pen in for repair/replacement and they ask if I can give my shipping address. After I supplied them with my shipping address I have not heard from them... :-( If you have the same issue (and I see from your comments that I'm not alone), please do write to customer service and if you want to include a link to this video, please do so.

Hi, I've got the same problem as you have on this video. I felt like I've wasted some of my hard-earned money to this crappy device. Does 3doodler help its customers with this issue? I need help with mine. I've bought additional set of PLAs and ABSs thinking it would run smoothly, but no, it's like shit. Any advice as to what I can do with mine? Thanks in advance!

Get in touch with customer service by opening a ticket on their website and see if they reply with a solution. The solution will at best be a new pen with a chance that it won't work either. You can also decide to return it ["(b) promptly notifying 3Doodler by emailing returns@the3Doodler.com during the Warranty Period of any failure of the Product to meet the Limited Warranty, and providing a detailed description of such alleged failure"]

Yeah, I've finally sent an e-mail earlier. I've expressed my concerns and feeling with my unlucky purchase of their crappy product. My biggest problem is that I've bought mine abroad. Lost the receipt along the way home. had it replaced with the help and effort of my travelling sister, but still got that same problem on the replacement pen that I've got afterwards. I think there's even no service centers for their pen here on my country which makes matters worse. To think that it's like I've spent my hard-earned money for this crap makes me feel furious deep inside. In the end, I've learned my lesson the hard way

+Tuff Stuff well first it's supposed to get headed up in the hi temp setting then place pla plastic inside and wait till the exes abs plastic comes out and it turns into the pla then you switch it to low. Also get the mini screwdriver and turn the heat up slightly that will work better . Clean the nozzle then the insides and that's what I did and it worked mine did what the pen in the vid did too . But mine works like as if I just got it 👍🏼

My daughter saved her money, ordered it, waited four weeks for it to arrive - finally today. And we are having the EXACT same problems. One strand of ABS worked and then started getting slower. PLA will not work at all. We've tried cleaning it, opening it up, adjusting settings. Nothing. Tears and lots of frustration. I'll share this video in my complaint to the company.

I am in the same exact situation as your daughter! I just got a 3doodler 2.0 for my 12th birthday that I have been waiting for more than half a year. I was excited at the first use but then I had to force it out and it hurt my hand. Brookstone was very nice and replaced it for free, but I had the same exact problem (again)! I will definitely contact customer support and show this video. I hope your daughter and myself both get ours replaced with ones that actually work.
I unboxed the 3Doodler 2.0 pen today and experienced exactly the same problem as this video shown. I had opened the nozzle, maintenance cover and followed the trouble shooting procedures but it did not work at all. The gearbox kept spinning when the button were press but there was totally no grip on the plastic strand/filament.
Same happened to my kids. Problem is the device is not pure injection molding(screw/auger drive). It pushes rigid rod(when cold) into the heated nozzle, but when rod reaches the end there's no length for the pinch/roller drive to push. Thus, molten glob. Two possible solutions: 1.) Blow through the back(not recommended) to push the molten material. 2.) Find a steel rod that will fit and drive it thru the pen. Good luck. Keep on.
I am having the same problem - I have already received a replacement pen and it's not working either. I can only get a bit of plastic to extrude before it stops after a few seconds. I can hear that the motor is still going but nothing comes out, if I push on the strand I can get some plastic to extrude but after a few seconds it stops again. If I take out the strand, remove the maintenance door to clean it I cannot see anything that could be jamming it other than the part of the plastic strand that is all stretched out. It seemed to work pretty good for a while when I first got it but now it doesn't.

(EDITED) I have just requested another replacement pen, they are sending another one out right away no problem, but I do need to return the pen first. Last return was speedy and I received a voucher for the value of the postage. Will keep posting here how things work out. I think they are aware of issues with the product and are doing their best to get it right. Anyone with issues should pursue with their Tech Support. The product may be flawed but I have to say their support has been fantastic.

Just received my second replacement pen yesterday. It does seem to work OK but was a bit temperamental at first. At one point it jammed up completely and I had to open the port cover to clear the jam, the plastic was so bent up the worm screw wouldn't turn. Totally my fault as I tried to push the strand in too hard when it wouldn't advance and the tip bent. I do not recommend trying to pull the plastic out from the rear if that happens as I managed to pull the back off completely - twice! Luckily it just snaps back in. I did manage to get it working smoothly after a few false starts, even with PLA plastic at the proper PLA setting which I was never able to get working previously. Time will tell if it continues to work because both the pens I had previously worked for awhile and eventually stopped working. Oh yeah and it did work better if I put the strand in BEFORE heating it up as @CrazyAlpaca4 suggested... I want to say before anyone suggests it that I ALWAYS take the plastic out of the pen when I'm done using it and I usually remove the nozzle and clean out the tip as well. Bonus for Canadian customers is if you need to return the pen you can mail it to Toronto and the replacement will be mailed out from there. Only took two weeks round trip. Great customer service.
The exact thing happened to three new 3doodler 2.0's that we purchased last week. As shown in other posts our doodlers all stopped working just as the excellent video shows. One of ours did work for a day without a problem. I purchased an original doodler last year as a present and it has never jammed. The 2.0 versions seem to be faulty and basically, at this time, sucks. I would highly recommend not purchasing this piece of equipment until the design has been perfected.
Same problem here, fortunately I purchased through Amazon.. after seeing this common lack of timely response from support I'm just sending it back. Too bad, I was looking forward to playing with it. Thanks for sharing your experience.
I have experienced this problem with 3 different pens - I bought the original pen from a high street retailer and they very decently replaced it twice. In all cases, the pens worked for a few strands but then blocked. I cleaned the pen but after less than a quarter of a filament it blocked again. It's such a shame as it could / should be a great product. The retailer has given me a full refund. Apparently, they experienced no issues with version 1.0 but have had multiple returns with version 2.0. Looks to me like there is a fundamental issue with this version of the product.
I had the same problem with my pen, so I sent mine back and I am currently waiting for my new one to arrive. I hope this one works!!
try pushing with a paperclip straightened where you insert the filament when it is heated. hope it works

Did you try cleaning the insides then sniping the ends then placing it back in and if it still does not come out then remove the tip of the pen and then snip the ends of the plastic again if it does not touch the gears gently turn it anti clockwise it should grip then doodle without the tip of the pen mine worked again because of that and I turned the heat up a bit, then I put the tip back on the pen and it came out smoothly. ( you can also clean the tip of the pen).

Bro I bought one for my daughters and i wish i would have bought the regular one. DO NOT BUY THE 3DOODLER START! IT WILL JAM within 10 uses. I PROMISE YOU THAT. Then i had to return it and get a replacement which is not worth it.
I had the exact same problem ! it was a christmas present for my girlfriend in another country and now im stuck with it. Never buying a kickstarter gadget again :(
Hi, i had this problem when i first got mine. I didn’t try email them until now so they wont send me a replacement 😞
I purchased one of these in the UK for my daughters Christmas present but it has the same problem, a bit of stand will come out for a few seconds then nothing. If I put pressure on the back of the strand it will come out of the nozzle but again stops a few seconds after pressure is removed. We have tried with the temperature screw turned from coolest to hottest but have only managed to waste about 8 strands trying to get it to work. I have noticed from the videos there seem to be 2 types of screw driver supplied with these, a long metal flat head and the other a small plastic double-headed type. Ours has the long metal screwdriver so does yours in the above video, do most of the problem ones have that type of screwdriver?
You have to take out the other strand before putting a new one in. So it got jammed.
You have to use a tool to open the tip. Then put another strand in. Then click slow and fast so the tip that was jammed can get out. To stop this from happening again cute the tip of used strands.
My son purchased one from Michaels at the loop in Orlando two weeks ago while we were on holiday from Ireland. We have the very same problem. I will be contacting the company but I'm not encouraged that they have not sorted you out yet. A pretty bad service in my opinion.
I see u got 2 probs there. 1) you need to give it 30secs to heat the strand up when u insert it. 2) u are using the same heat setting for PLA and ABS. Abs needs a higher temp than pla.

DOAT - DonOfAllTime Thanks for taking the time to comment. Regarding you comments: 1) the instruction manual says that the pen needs to heat up before inserting a plastic strand ("Step 3") and that you then insert a strand by feeding it down the length of the 3Doodler until you feel it gripped by the gears inside the pen. It can take up to 30 seconds for a newly loaded strand to begin extruding from the nozzle of the pen ("Step 4"). They don't say that you have to let the strand heat up first after insetting the strand. If that would be required how could you continuously doodle finishing a whole strand? 2) No. In the video I first set it to "Low" and I load a PLA (nothing happens). Then I load a ABS strand and I set it to "High" and again nothing happens. By the way: The people at 3Doodler think the pen is defective.
you have to set the switch on the side to pla or abs plastic depends on what you are using
mine is doing the same thing except I just got this pen today. It worked perfectly for about 3 hours then abruptly stopped working. is this the similar to you
I now have the same problem and it turns out that the problem must be the noozle because without it it works just fine. only problem is i don't know how to clean it because i don't have anything to heat it up. The ABS is stuck although when using the 3D doodle it first works fine and the ABS comes out, but after a few moments it seems to cool down too fast or smth in the noozle
I have the same problem and I can't find any videos to help me, I once spent about an hour trying to figure out what's wrong. Worst part only got to use it for 5 minutes until it just stopped
as i see most of the pens does not work. same as mine. maybe the manufacturer should considered twice before started selling the pen. if they dont deliver what they promised it may call frawd

why are you being dumb and not telling people to turn their heat up? it's obvious that too cold filament won't flow well. i had this problem and fixed it myself with the screwdriver.
i fixed it, mine was the same way. i got it from goodwill for 2 dollars. because of another comment i adjusted the heat all the way up. i just used the included screwdriver to stick into the tiny hole next to the hi lo off switch. i turned it clockwise until it was fully turned. i had to give it a small bit of encouragement by pushing on the filament because i figured if the motor has been going for awhile, it might of ground down the filament so it won't have the friction anymore to move the filament thru on just that small spot where the gears had been moving. once i did this. it just took over and started working correctly. =^-^=
the same problem :( it was Xmas gift for my kids it could be a problem with heating - the head is not hot enough and the drive gear have not enough power to push the filament through the nozzle.
We got one session of printing with the ABS, but today our experience is EXACTLY like you just documented. Nothing happens on low with PLA and on high with ABS we only get a small squiggle unless I apply some pressure. The pen does not print on either setting now. Have you already reached out to 3Doodler yet? I'm going to share the link to your video with them if you don't mind. So frustrating, especially for my nine year old.

Peter Harbin try taking out the nozzle and run it until some plastic comes out if the plastic comes out clean the nozzle and continue drawing, remember pull the plastic strand out of the pen and never leave it cool inside or it will be ruined and cut the tip of the strand to reuse it, leave the strand a perfect cilinder form for it to work fine and not ruin the pen, if it doesn't work i don't know more to do but maybe it will help you and dont leave the strand to cool, take it out with the dual button press while it is on never shut it off while a strand is in it

Fabrizio Lucentini We had always removed the strand when the pen was hot, and we snipped the ends clean when re-using. We actually watched several videos on it's use and read the instructions before firing it up for the first time. We got that one, first session in with ABS, then several days later...just like in this video.

Peter Harbin i don't know i was just suggesting what can help with it
It justs happened to me exact way. Purchased is the USA, flew overseas and gave it to my son as a Xmas gift last nite. He wants to cry. If I have to returned it is gonna cost more for me. So dissapointed...
what is the replacement protocol? like do you ship it back to them? wht if you have plastic that you attempted it on?
Try to put the strand before plugging in the device I did that and it worked for me, I know that you got a new one shipped to you but maybe that's the problem. :)
My take on these issues is that the product seems to be some kind of beta where they only added the bare minimum number of controls (maybe they wanted it to look sleek?) to address the very complex issue of melt temperature for plastics or resins. Every color is going to melt at a different temperature and the lack of custom temperature verification (your only control is a little screwdriver that has no feedback to tell if you are even moving the gauge or what it is set to) means that there is no way to test and make sure your extruder will melt at the perfect temperature for designing objects. This sets many users up to fail because too hot and it will extrude liquidy and fast and too slow/cool and it will clog perpetually. (I guess they wanted something to improve on? they didnt want the product to be too good or no one would buy the 3.0? or 2.0 DELUXE who knows)
hey did you check the inside with the tools theres probably a strand stuck
I have the same problem with my one! It looks like it doesn't grab the plastic correctly or it the plastic just clogs inside the pen.... But I had this problem from the beginning and I didn't knew it is a problem of the pen, just thought I use it the wrong way! Don't think they would give me a new pen....

Tengo el mismo problema, probe con ABS, PLa y Flexi, ninguna trabaja. Envie mi consulta a 3Doodler y solo me preguntan la direccion de envio. nada mas.
I just got one of those and it is so bad! My plastic isn't coming out either!!! I'm really mad at them because my dad took it apart and the plastic has to find the whole where it comes out, and it's in the corner. AND when I wanted the plastic to come out from the pen, it wouldn't come out!!
Same thing here hope they see this video and comment and send us both new WORKING 3doodlers
u didn't push the plastic down right in my opinion
hi im from spain and i have the same problem what would i have to do?
My has similar issues: 1. PLA does not extrude at all. 2. ABS extruded sometimes. 3. I sent email to the customer service and no answer. Please advise.
Im having the same problem where mine does the same thing! what do I do? do i call thinkgeek? or the customer service for 3doodler?
I know how to solve this problem. Read the instructions and turn up the temperature with a small tool it comes with. We had the same problem but we fixed it by turning the heat up with the smallest tool. It is in the instruction manual.

Usually, I see the youtubers put in the plastic strand first then turn on the temperature.

How did u fix the problem because i am having the same problem
+Mike VanDam where that you buy?
Before using it, you need to let it sit there for about 35 seconds for it to heat up. Make sure to be gentle with the pen. Remember, it's not made of the hardest solid in the world which is actually diamond. That's probably why you had problems. Also it was most likely a jam in the pen. Read the instructions which will tell you how to deal with jamming in the pen or just look it up on KZread or Google.
Mines doing this too. I think the hole in the tip needs to be slightly bigger so it's easier for the shit to come out. Frustrating

Fortunately I was able to get an entire figure done before I got this problem (about 13 strands). I wonder, if I was able to get it to work for so long, maybe mine is not defective. its simply a matter of playing with the temperature.
Its Happening with me too. What I have to do?
I had the same problem with my pen. I do not want to pay another $100 for it so I tried many different strategies to get pla to work. WHAT I FOUND WAS PLA DOES WORK IF YOU PUT IT ON HIGH. SO I RECOMEND YOU NOT BUY A NEW PEN. IT WOULD BE A WASTE OF FNAF MONEY.
Did you even read the instructions?!?! You where supposed to turn the light on due to the type of plastic and keep on pushing the plastic in until you feel the gear inside be able to pull it in without any help.
This exact same thing happened to my friends that she got for Christmas
By the way, have sent 3 different emails regarding our problems on the 3doodler web site, all without a response
I'm able to use ABS but my PLA won't work and hasnot since I got it and now my button is not working properly ither to be homist im getting to the point where I want to get a refund
Why is there so much noise other than the 3doodler😓I can hardly hear anything other than the noises
I had the problem too but i figured out it was the nozzle cloging up
The same thing happened to me, but I can't even pull my plastic out of the pen.
The same thing is happening to me and I'm really disappointed because it was a lot of money
honestly I was kinda bored so I stared at the green dot reflection on the floor and made a blinking sound
I just got my 3doodler pen after a 5 month's wait till it arrived and I am having the same problem. Thank you for this video that explains the problem exactly. I read in some on the comment that its not the original pen although it was ordered by the original website! its not just that my pen gets jammed every time i use it and I have to open it to clean it in every use. To be truthful I feel like I have been ripped off with this gadget.

***** I think I have a real 3Doodler2.0 ordered from www.3doodler.com/ and shipped to me from Hong Kong. There seems to be an earlier model 3Doodler2.0 that had slightly different looking buttons. From my communications with 3Doodler it seems that they had a batch of pens with "a known software flaw which the newer pens have corrected". I just got the new pen sent to me that I'll test this weekend (and I will post an update).
Wow I only got to try my pen out one time and then I guess I was discouraged too long. Didn't pick it up again until today and now this... So disappointed 😔

i fixed mine by turning the heat up with the small screw driver in the hole next to the hi lo off button, i turned it clockwise. it got hotter and the filament was more more liquidy so the motor was strong enough to push every thing thru once i gave it a bit of encouragement by pushing on the back of the filament.
I have this exact same problem. But I bought mine a while back.

Hey check the hatch of the maintenence hatch------------> there should be a metal strip under it. If you dont have one, that would explain A LOT

Bando Kim Great suggestion: Yes, that's the metal strip that presses it down into the right direction so that the rotors will grab it... it's in place alright.

The same problem occurred with my new 3Doodler 2.0, I was furious when it happened as I was extremely excited and then my first use of it just didn't work.
Just bought one from Michaels. It won't work either and is going back.
I Think You cut the tip off the plastic

+Mabel Fadd Little screwdriver will do the trick. The "tool" is not more than a little screwdriver.

Nigel Whitehouse Sorry to hear you have the same problem. You can try two things: 1) Keep sending reminders in the form of a new ticket through the customer care website of 3Doolder that you want to get this fixed for you (that is you want a new pen if they agree that your problem is due to a malfunctioning pen) or 2) Notify 3Doodler by emailing that you want to return as per the terms on their own website: returns@the3Doodler.com
That's what happened to mine the exact same thing to FIVE Different pens
Duidelijk een Nederlands accent :-) Ik hoop dat dit opgelost geraakt, echt wel vervelend zo.

No actually it has to be on and at the right temperature before you can insert any plastic. Don't think you know everything if you haven't read the instruction manual.
i also have the same problem with my pen.
