3Doodler 2 0 Teardown & Modification

Ғылым және технология

A teardown of the 3Doodler 2.0 3D printing pen followed by an attempt at a modification to improve it's performance. Unfortunately the modification only gave a very very slight improvement and my 3doodler is still unusable with ABS.
Thanks to reichelt.com for sending me the 3doodler to review. If you're looking electronic bits and bobs, test gear, soldering irons, multimeters etc, then it's well worth taking a look at their website.

Thanks for the tip- the 3Doodler Create Plus breaks down the same way. Couldn't figure it out until you showed me. Awesome!

Love this! I had the first generation version, and I’ve always wanted to see how they fit so much into an even smaller space with the new version. I know some people say that you could have sent it back to the manufacturers instead (nothing wrong with that either), but I’m really glad you decided to take the ingenuitive approach and fix things yourself!

I just purchased the kid's version of their pen called the 3Doodler Start at my local Barnes and Noble and I'm very impressed by it. The filaments are shorter and you go through them very quickly but it works really well and the extruded plastic remains a bit soft so that it can actually be manipulated and molded with your fingers before setting. It's bulkier than the 2.0 pen but it just works and I couldn't be happier with it.

Hi Pierre - After making this video, I was contacted by 3doodler who sent me one of their new '3doodler create' models - In spite of looking pretty much identical to the 2.0, it is far superior in every way... I'll be doing a review/teardown video on that in the near future. It is certainly not the case that all 3doodler products have problems, and I'm glad that you found one that works well for you. Cheers!!

I needed a hotter tip and ended up using an adapter with variable voltage set to 7.5v I use it for plastic repairs on car interiors and needed hotter melt to ensure adhesion to old plastic. Works great, but I really wanted to use 1.75 as sticks of 3 are so expensive. I bought rolls of 3mm but had to hand bend pieces and was tired of breaking and having to push it through when a kink didn't feed properly. I bought the 3doodler flow to take advantage of the 1.75 but it isn't hot enough either. Unfortunately it doesn't allow a plug in adapter, has a permanent cord coming out of it. I'm about to splice it and try to rig it to my adapter, don't care if I break it, I need it hotter or it's useless

I love to see these videos where you work out what went wrong and how you would fix it :) Great job! It really show you know what you are talking about. I know with a common hot glue gun this is a major issue. If you just use a little glue for a short time you have no issue but if you need to use a lot of glue in a short time you can end up spending time just waiting for the glue to melt. Thanks for sharing :) and working out what was going on.

Hi Benja - As a result of this video, 3doodler got in touch with me and replaced my '3doodler 2.0' with their new '3doodler create' which looks nearly identical, but works totally differently... I really like the 'create' and I've been using it for all manner of little repair jobs which couldn't have been done any other way... Soon I'll get around to making a video about it showing the differences... I've been very bad at knocking out videos for the last month or two, but I'll get the camcorder out soon. Cheers!!

I look forward to seeing the new and improved doodler. I like it when a company sees an issue and instead of blaming the end user they redesign and make a much better product.

Thanks Eric - Would have been great if my mod had fixed the 3doodler properly, but alas I just couldn't cram any more watts through that hot end without having to increase the supply voltage beyond what the microcontroller could tolerate. Cheers!!

You make a good point, if a desktop printer takes X Watts to extrude at Y mm per second how can hand held work with less. I wonder if successful hand held 3D pens use more than 5W.

Thanks Marc - As you can probably tell, I really want this unit to work properly - I was hoping to be able to use it to make gaskets and grommets out of Ninjaflex... that would have come in handy for the hydroponics setup. Cheers!!

I took mine apart following your video, check the soldering joints where the red and black head power wires connect to the tip(hot end)at the circuit board, both wires on my unit were connected by one (1) strand, check and resolder and your heat problem will be solved....I hate the 2 choices for speed control(too fast and way to fast)I want to remove the feed unit and use a bowden feed device mounted off the back end than I control the feed one step at a time.,I will grind down the feed gear so I will fake the unit into thinking the motor is feeding.

i have a filament stuck between the gear and the entrance, so im trying to reach it by pulling the center out, but it seems to have glued the body to the exterior somehow....doesnt seem to slide out as easily in the video

It seems to be rather optimistic to try to ask six Watts of power to run a fan and motor, and then be able to melt a continuous flow of plastic filament. Running with a slower feed speed might help, but you're sinking that meagre remaining power (less the losses in the circuitry) into a length of plastic and the surface onto which you are trying to work, plus losses to air. More current might be the best option, if the PSU is limited to 5 Volts. Is the 'Create' using higher current, or did they also use a higher voltage supply? Thanks Jim.

I faced an issue that basically made me filament tube, clogged and now I tried to remove the body from the exterior skeleton but i ended up killing my pen. So no chances of it working again😭😭😭 it was impossible to get the body out

Just too wimpy a driver/heater combo? I wonder if you could just feed the heater switching transistors off 9 volts after isolating the (high?/low?) side from the rest of the board.

It is of course totally possible that I'm totally wrong about the heater being too small... Perhaps the tolernace on my feed screw are wrong and it's just slipping on the ABS where other units would work OK... Whatever the case, I just wanted it to work better. Cheers!!

Given that is starts off OK and then dies off I'd guess it can't maintain temperature. increasing the heater voltage or reducing the resistance in the heater (if a length of resistance wire tap it at the middle and join the two ends) are the only things I could think of that might be done with minimal reworking of the design. With a tiny voltage regulator and a 12v power rail instead of 5v this product looks like it could have been great. (open software would make it even better)

The other possibility I thought of was that some of the heat from the extruder is flowing back up through the ABS strand, softening the strand in the area of the feed screw... It seems that it'll extrude OK for a little while with a fresh strand, but as soon as that strand has been retracted one time, it's then game-over for that strand. Perhaps the unit works better in a colder room and that's why other people haven't had the same problems I've encountered. Cheers!!

Hello,I have the same 3d pen and from what I can see your device is faulty, you should demod it and return it to the factory for replacement.

Hi Walter - I already have a replacement '3doodler create' which looks nearly identical apart from being a grey-blue colour instead of grey, and has the 3doodler logo printed the correct way up when you're using it right-handed. The 3doodler create is a whole lot better than the 2.0 was. I use it quite often and it very rarely suffers from jams and clogs... it's much better. Cheers!!
