3Doodler 2.0 Unboxing & Review

Ғылым және технология

An unboxing and review of the 3Doodler 2.0 3D Printing Pen.
Please note that although this looks nearly identical to the '3Doodler Create', it is not the same thing. I love my '3Doodler Create', but as you can see in this video, the 3Doodler 2.0 just didn't work properly.
Reichelt were kind enough to send me a 3Doodler 3D printing pen to have a play around with. Reichelt are a large German-owned distributor who have opened up shop in the UK this year, and have many products up to 20% cheaper than elsewhere in the UK. Thank you Reichelt for sending me things to review, and for providing an alternative to the big three electronics distributors we've had for decades.
The 3Doodler works in a similar fashion to a glue-gun, but with a motorised and temperature controlled extruder. It can print in both PLA and ABS, and also use flexible materials such as Ninjaflex... or so it claims.
You can find Reichelt's website at www.reichelt.co.uk
If for some reason after watching this review, you still want to buy a 3Doodler, then here's a link to the product.:

It's the size of you nozzle if you get the nozzles pack use the big circle one. At the beginning I had trouble with it but I changed my nozzle to the bigger circle and it worked soooo much better

Yeap. I realise your video saying is right. I got it at my home and really hard to use. The PLA Material...it will keeping overflow a lot when I turn off every time...also the ABS doesn’t smell good useing at home. Lot of video saying good thinks but actually 3doodler need to word on the how they can not let material overflow and can do reuse this.

Hi Jim, I really enjoy your videos so thanks for that! But I couldn't help to notice that you are using a counterfeit Mitutoyo digital caliper... :( I hope you are aware of that and didn't buy it thinking it was the real deal.

Thanks Daniel - I intentioanlly bought them knowing that they were a knock-off after I found that my 'powerfix' branded calipers (the generic no-name ones from ebay) consistently gave the wrong readings on parts of the scale...Depending on where you are on the scale, the powerfix ones will deduct 0-10mm from the actual reading. Of course, I found this out the hard way when the bits of my project didn't fit together... I saw AvE's anti-review of the Mitutoyo knock-offs and all the way through I was thinking 'they're a lot better than the ones I've got'... I clicked on 'buy it now' whilst AvE was throwing them in his dustbin. Cheers!!

Well OK then :) I've had a pair of fake ones as well and I sure wouldn't trust them. Threw them out after taking a close look at the poor quality. But as you said, they seem better than the powerfix stuff :)

I got this when i was 12 from my aunt for christmas. It didnt work at all just like in the video. I felt sad for my aunt that wasted the money. And emtying is so problematic they dont givu any kind of pin. I was very frustrated like why cant you work if i followed every instruction. And they dont give you extra parts if you lose something

  • @ThingsWhichArentWork

    @ThingsWhichArentWork

Hi Paul - I didn't measure the current, but the pen shows no signs that it's a lack of current causing the problem (heats up quickly enough.. motors whir quickly etc)... I think the problem is with the calibration of the NTC thermistor inside the tip. I've actually got the pen in pieces on my desk at the moment, trying to figure out the path that the NTC thermistor signal takes to see if I can bodge in an extra resistor, thereby making the microcontroller inside heat things up to a higher temperature.... Teardown/Repair video in progress.... Hope you & yours are all well. Must do a meet-up soon. Cheers!!

You were forcing the filament inside and the 3doodler spins the filament inside of itself before it feeds it and you forcing it didnt allow the filament to spin which caused it to jam

I really wasn't. I spoke to 3doodle after I'd made this video and they told me that the 3doodler 2.0 was not a good design and they sent me a '3Doodler Create' as a replacement. The Create looks nearly identical to the 2.0 but I've not had any problems with it at all. It's still going strong 4 years later (though I don't use it often). Cheers!!

Hey John - I think the 3doodler is quite an amazing piece of design. So compact in the hand and comfortable to hold... and al they needed to do to achieve it was to leave out all of the larger bulky heaters, motors and mechanicals that are needed to properly extrude plastic at 250C. Cheers!!

What's the ouput of your power supply? I recently purchased 3D Stereo Drawing pen off of Ebay (£20). I wanted it for laying conductive filament onto existing 3d Prints. I also thought it might be good for repairs etc. I purposely looked for one with a 12v 3amp ps. The reviews I read of the 3.0 versions state that they do not get hot enough to work well and they seem to be working off 5v ?amps. Version 2.0 uses 12v, usually 2amps. I haven't adjusted the temperature on mine yet because it seemed to work well enough with PLA although I thought it needed to be a little hotter. My pen is set to about half of its total temperature.

Hi Bryn - The power brick is giving out 5.1V with no load attached. There's no sign from the device that it's struggling to get enough power... The motors don't seem to struggle or anything like that. It just seems as if the set-point for the temperature is too low.... and given that the design pauses the motors when it can't maintain temperature, it would suggest ot me that they just didn't put a big enough heater in there in the first place... I should have gone with a cheapy off ebay instead. Cheers!!

Regardless, even with enough heat their successful operation is a bit of a black art :) The cool pics of toys and Eiffel Towers and the like are all well and good but god knows how long it takes to become that proficient. I'm convinced more and more that we live in a world with lots of cool tech that almost works ;)

Ain't that the truth :-) ... I have a little rant which I keep on using over and over again at work... 'Bad products are designed to work correctly, good products are designed to go wrong'... This is why cars have warning lights for low-oil, engine-fault, low petrol etc and computer servers have RAID disks and ECC error correcting memory (all desgined to go wrong)... Whereas 3D printers just keep on stepping through the program ragardless of whether they've run out of filament, or the extruder isn't maintaining the correct temperature. Cheers!!

You've inspired me to spend more time with my own 3D pen. I see that if I keep the tip close to the surface it slightly smudges the filament which appears to make it more adhesive and creates a better bond. If you have the feed at full speed you get thick lines, slowed down you get thinner and if you move the tip relatively quickly the lines are quite smooth. You can also do a circular motion that mixes the filament up makes quite thick and strong lines/surfaces. It also helps if you draw each side of the shape that you want to make and stencil over the lines. Flip the model over for each side you want to make with the base being on the paper or surface you are modelling onto. For more complex shapes I imagine some kind of temporary armature could help.

Yeah it's most likely that the ABS is too solid at the highest temp of the 3Ddoodler and it can't be fed through. The motor seems pretty weak to even do it too. Not sure why they will include ABS anyways since the fumes that it releases are bad for you :/

Hi ATC - After I made this video, I checked out some of the 3Doodler reviews on Amazon... 57% of them were 1-star... Interestingly though, it seemed that about 50% of people couldn't get it working with PLA and the other 50% couldn't get it working with ABS... I think there are serious quality control issues over the temperature calibration on the 3doodler. It's a great shame as I had this cunning plan to use the 3doodler for making ninjaflex gaskets for my hydroponics stuff. Cheers!!

Thanks Hari - I'm not sure that the unit is actually defective. I took it to pieces the day after I made this review video and tried to tweak the internals to increase the tip temperature... My fix sort-of worked in that I successfully increased the tip temperature, but the heater still just doesn't have enough power to keep the ABS flowing out. (the teardown video is uploading in the background right now whilst I'm replying to comments. Chhers!!

The 3doodler 2.0 was not around for long - They very quickly released the 3doodler 'create' instead, which looks nearly identical (grey-blue colour instead of grey), but has a totally redesigned extrusion mechanism which works far better. I contacted 3doodler support after this review and they sent me a 'create' instead... It is far superior and I use it quite often... just never got around to doing a review video for that one. Cheers!!
