37308 hauls dead 66250 and steel empties up the Lickey Incline thrash

37308 went to rescue failed 66250 that had failed, the 37 is seen here growling up the Lickey Incline with the dead class 66 in tow and the empty steel wagons filmed from Vigo Bridge. Date was 17/08/2003

    😮Fairly new to the thrash and clag scene but have the class 37 sound etched on my memory due to one appearing out of nowhere for the Weardale cement trains at Stanhope, County Durham when passing through. I have become a Lickey incline fan even tho I have yet to visit it.

    This is just a slight slope compared to the Tyne Dock to Consett branch up here in County Durham, double headed 37's used to haul 800 ton iron ore trains up a 9 mile stretch with 1 in 49 and two stretches of 1 in 35 with some wicked curves, two 9F's did it in the days of steam...

    Lack of serious clag shows how clean these older engines run when worked hard under load. They may not be as fuel-efficient as modern locos, but they still work.

    Yes much quicker between Pz - Ponsandane, and the Cleaning Sidings at Long Rock, but the Coupling was soooo heavy. With the 08 Pilot, one hand could be used, but with the 50, you had to get underneath to couple-up each time.

    Isn't the diesel motor just a generator for the traction motors? So you're not likely to hear it struggle, as it doesn't take the weight of the train itself?

    Yes you're correct, but the more stress that is applied to the Traction Motors, is relayed to the Diesel Engine, hence the engine struggling.
