Enjoying seeing this, didn’t realise at the time one day they would be gone, took it for granted at the time. Can remember seeing steam coming off the ingots some days when they were still warm and it was raining.

I grew up around Helensburgh in the 80's... the class 37s ruled and hauled every train both passenger and freight right past my house. Will never forget those days and would love to go back

In these days of plastic vacuum cleaners on rails it's great to see and hear the sound of the 37's. In fact anything that came out of the English Electric works sounds great on full throttle.

Have just happened across this heart-stopping vid, have always loved the Deltics and EWS locos. This has brought back so many memories of rail travel in Scotland, was upset years ago when EWS was bought by the German company, but still see some of them around, maybe their new owners are saving money by not rebrandiing, just waiting for them to become obsolete, but these old things go on for ever so they will have a long wait!

I have contributed to so many views on this video haha love it!, the chest rumbling feeling of these passing beside you is just fantastic in person, even better double headed, the sound hitting off the forests in the distance is just unmatched to any other locomotive for me personally, quite simply the best way to get woken up. I was lucky enough to have seen them all the time growing up mostly at Rannoch station till they were phased out the 10 odd years ago, catch the odd one now and then very rarely from the railtours up the line but for me they just sounded better and dirtier back then when they were proper working the line up to fort william hauling all sorts, even the midges where scared of them 🤣

Superb video. I have fond memories of WHL freight in the late 90s. 2000 was probably the last good year for freight, the only let down if you could call it that was that by then most of the 37s were in EWS. I like EWS but the livery mix of 97 - 99 was all over by 2000 and then of course class 66s got cleared for the route and that was the final nail in the coffin. Thanks for posting this awesome video :)

Class 66 lack personality and are nowhere near as good looking, sounding or as hard ass A locomotive as a 37

Nothing sounds quite like a 37 does in the West Highlands, at night you could hear them for miles!

Used to live at Faslane Peace Camp in the 90's. Each night you'd hear the 37 pulling the night train, full throttle from Gairlochjead then kill the power until they hit Helensburgh Central. A beautiful sound.

Sort of like steam was here in the USA in the late 1950's and early 1960's until it's demise. I remember as a kid you could hear them coming from 5 miles away, all the kids in the neighborhood I grew up in would run down to the tracks to watch them thunder past. At that time Diesel-Electric was taking over with the F series and ALCO diesels for everything bigger than shorthaul regional railroads and spur lines. I'm glad I'm old enough at 66 years old, to remember live steam.

Craigendoran to Helensburgh Upper incline on wet/icy rails in winter used to be a killer.. rev hard - idle -rev - idle etc etc (repeat for 10 minutes) as it kept losing traction

Great bit of filming. Good locations and sound. Used to hear these engines pulling out of Oban in the mid seventies when I worked at Glencruiten Golf Club. They always remind me of that time.

Those 37's are the only engines in the UK that I like to watch in the USA. The sound of those beasts is so real. Sort of like the old ALCO diesels of the 1950's and 1960's here in America. They seem rather underpowered though for freight. Rarely do you see them hauling more than 10 railcars, our freight is rarely less than 75 to 80 railcars. With as many as 250 railcars at times quite doable.

adoro todas as Diesel da BR que foram fabricadas pela English Electric, em Portugal existem duas séries ainda em funcionamento, a série 1400 que deriva da classe 31 e a série 1800 que deriva da classe 50.
