GWR 5043 & 7029 Thunder up the lickey incline- The Welsh Marches Express- 10/6/23- 4K

The Welsh Marshes Express with 5043 Earl of Mount Edgcumbe and 7029 Clun Castle taking on the notorious 1 in 37.7 Lickey Incline.
The trip was originally planned to return via Oxford and Hatton bank but due to ongoing repairs on Nuneham Viaduct it was rerouted via the Lickey Incline offering a rare chance to see 2 Castles hard at work. After a bit of a wait we were treated to one of the best performances I’ve ever witnessed on the bank. The train could be heard having a good run at the bank and whistling through Bromsgrove station before beginning the gruelling 1 in 37.7 climb to Blackwell without diesel assistance.

I was on the train. 56 mph at the start and 18 at the top, we were informed on board. And as you say, no 47 assistance! That was not the case for all the journey though. Thanks for sharing this superb film. Ps We were late because NR had imposed a 40mph speed limit through the earlier thunderstorms.

Up the Lickey with three locos including a 2,500hp diesel, and two Castles with roughly 1500hp each. Totally pointless. That power would have been more useful for a high speed run on the level at 100mph plus !!!! Also rather dangerous having a 120ton diesel swinging along on the rear (when not powering) as this weight will try & derail the much lighter coaches in the curves. Which is why it was banned in BR days !!! Would I a Railway Engineer buy a ticket for such a dangerous day out ? Not on your life !

  • @alastairmeanley5091

What a ridiculous summary. BR far from banned locos at the rear of the train, they had 5000 hp class 87 electric locos pushing trains at 110 mph on the west coast mainline and class 91 electric locos at 140 mph for a while on the East Coast before lowering to 125 mph, these locos would coast for miles at High speeds not powering going down Beatock, shap, Stoke Bank etc. Class 47 locos were regularly used in push pull trains in Scotland at speeds in excess of that on a steam charter. The practice of push pull is still seen everyday on the Chiltern mainline with the class 68 diesel locos.
