It's a great compilation! Here in brazil we have some cities that received some immigrants from the american civil war, like Santa Bárbara d'Oeste or Americana and the descendants still organizing a festival in these cities celebrating the south and its culture. (I think Brazil is the only country that has a cemetery and a memorial for the Confederates outside the USA) 🇺🇸🤝🇧🇷

Since you are fluent with the French language. For grins go to Miami, Florida. There are lots of people from Haiti. French is spoken in Haiti. May sound a little too fast in rythem. Certainly not like what is spoken in France, nor Quebec, Canada. Then try the Cajun French in Louisiana. You can listen to both on various KZread videos. The origins of Cajun French is from the French speaking side of the Basque Mountains. It may sound a little strange.

And the majority of people in Missouri were pro-Union, but the Confederates gained control. No one will probably see this comment. Growing up all over the US (military fam) I’ve come to know that the war isn’t/wasn’t as black and white as ppl think it is. I think history is important regardless if it hurts to talk abt (ie slavery) to talk and learn from it helps us in the present and future to not repeat it. We should not try to cover up history and tear away the hardships of those past men and women who came before. I also think is the CSA won or forced a draw, feel like slavery would’ve been fazed out in a couple of years as industry would eventually come to Dixie and to be on the world stage and trade I’m sure the major powers at the time would something like to trade must get rid of slavery. No one alive today took part of the conflict/politics, so we can only look at why it happened from both point of views. But the CSA did know how to write some bangers.

The Civil War was about states rights(South) vs Federal control(North). Slavery was a secondary issue and was lawfully denounced with the Emancipation Proclamation signed in January 1st 1863.1/3 of all slaves were in the North. 1/2% of the population in the South were slave owners. Pigeonholing all Southerners is an ignorant and common practice by bigots, whom are largely in the North. Kids either fail to learn or research effectively, the Civil War in school.

Elijah, You make a lot of sense. There were numerous hot heads on both sides who helped start the American Civil War. Strong state loyalty followed suit, and initially the "ladies" cheered their men onward. So many believed the Southern propagandists and bought into the myth of Rebel military might. The North did its bragging, too, and believed just a few battles would end the rebellion. Some had believed the First Bull Run would do it. The South lacked industry for replacement of military arms, and their manpower was limited. All they could provide were wooden coffins...not even the square pegged nails to put them together. Yet, many a man loyally, but blindly, followed Robert E. Lee. Union generals, for the most part, did not inspire this kind of confidence until late in the War. Grant, once positioned correctly, had the manpower, arms, staff, and guts to bring this prolonged bloody disaster to a close. Lincoln held on to his beliefs. Yes, slavery was abolished; however, vicious, inconsistent reconstruction and carpet baggers made the South grow bitter, and the freed slaves were not too much better off. The plantation system in a modified form survived well into the 1950s. All was so sad! I had family on both sides, and have lived in both the North and South. My great, great grandmother was giving birth to a son while some of the fighting at Port Hudson, LA (it followed Vicksburg) spilled across the Mississippi River and took place under her bedroom window. She survived less than a year. I wonder how well today we have learned and/or remember our history?

Yes, many of the Southern songs are hauntingly beautiful. Try "Lorena". I play a piano, drums, and guitars. Others are very upbeat. My grandfather had countless verses for "Dixie". Gramps was old-time Virginian and used to sing parts of so many of them. He also could put Rebel words to Northern songs. He was company musician during the Spanish-American War. He "adjusted" his age to enlist and get out of what was still "doom and gloom Virginia."

For the Sourh as everyone ought to be. My father's brother William Hunter de Butts married Mary Custis Lee General Robert Edward Lee's Grand daughter. My two Great grandfather's Richard Earle de Butts and Henry Stribling Ashby were Mosby's Rangers One in Company A. The other in company B. Hope the rest of those who are listening to this tape had ancestors that fought for the South, does not matter how.
