30 Super Carry!

Around a year ago, I'd been looking for something like a .32 ACP magnum but somehow completely missed the fact that the 30 Super Carry had been brought out an entire year before! Here I discuss a few of my thoughts on what I hope will turn out to be the ultimate carry round.

I have a Steyr-Mannlicher 1905 pistol that shoots 7.65 mannlicher, which is only available from one source for 7+ dollars per round. So I did some research and got a loading die set from CH tool and die, and they recommended using 30 super carry cases and resizing them for 7.65 mannlicher. So that’s neat, and saves me a little money lol.

Who’s dumb enough to shop ammo at your local gun stores anyway? Buy that shit online like you’re supposed to do. If you shop online, you’ll notice that 30sc HST rounds cost about the same as 9mm HST, but it’s less expensive than HST rounds in 380, 40, 357sig, 45, and 10mm. 30sct HST rounds will do exactly what 9mm HST does, except in a 30sc gun, you’ll have at least more rounds to kill the bad guy with.

Until a pistol is designed from the ground up for .30 SC instead of just being a converted 9, a lot of potential is left unrealized in my opinion. I think an untapped advantage of .30 SC is in enabling double stack, dual feed handgun magazines, similar to that of the Five Seven. The lack of taper would make loading easier, make the magazine simpler to build and arguably more reliable, and add 1 to 2 more rounds over a double stack single feed mag. Making such a magazine out of steel would probably allow it to be thinner than a Glock 43 mag, enabling the design of a very slim high capacity pistol. Think P365XL but narrower and with 15 or 16 rounds instead of 12. The higher pressure and smaller bore diameter of .30 SC would also make compensators more effective for those who want to go that route

I agree with the potential of the cartridge, and I bought one right after it came out, but then I traded it back in again. The round is fine but having a whopping 2 guns that shoot it, one single stack and one subcompact, really takes my enthusiasm away. It's begging for a double stack possibly double feed full sized pistol, and I'd love a nice PCC/PDW style weapon to go along with it. I don't think it's meant to be though, unfortunately, it'll die on the vine similarly to my dreams of a modern and available double stack 7.62x25 handgun.

I shot the same 30 luger load at a 4x6 with the 86 grain bullet did a pass through that never expected that to happen. I bought 500 of each. It's a nice carry gun, fits 10 in the mag instead of 8 rds that the 9mm offered. Definitely has a "different" recoil impulse with those spicy higher chamber pressures, but I like it. Variety is the spice of life.

I think 30 super carry is such an interesting cartridge and I really wish Sig would make a P365 in it. I think if Sig did that 30 super carry would become a big player in the conceal carry market. Or at least a bigger player. And the hate for 30 super carry is something that I find super odd, why wouldn't you want more rounds for about the same power? It's the whole reason why people don't carry the 45. 9mm is smaller, lighter, and generally doesn't put as much force down range, and definitely doesn't has the energy transfer like 45 does at the same foot pounds of energy. Having a P365 Macro with a +20 rounds of 30 super carry would be really cool. And I think that's where the 30 super carry could have a real following. Speaking of lighter recoiling rounds, I'd love to find a company who could turn me out a 22 TCM barrel for a P365, I'd be limited to the 22 TCM 9R bullets, but throwing a 39gr pill down range at about 2000fps would be really cool. Plus, 22 TCM is as cheap as 9mm (when you buy from the manufacturer online anyway.) One can dream. One can dream.

Maybe keep the projectile weights the same but hotrod it to 120 foot pounds of energy or so?

I have three, the S&W Shield, Shield Plus and Hi-Point 3095 Carbine, both of the Shields are mine and my wife's current carry. The carbine is a kick in the ass fun gun to shoot, brass retention is challenging with all of them. They reload fine, they are accurate and I trust my life with them. I'm also on the .32 fetish, I recently acquired a Ruger SP 101 in 327 Federal Magnum, definitely a little spicier, if I could just get my hands on a Henry Big Boy Steel Rifle in 327 Federal, my quest would be over. Just as a little background info, I have a diverse selection to draw from, the pipsqueaks to the reasonable big ones, after all the First Rule of Gun Nuts, 1. You can NEVER have too many !!!!! Update: I also need to include my BSA 310 Cadet, fun little single shot, shoots a 0.321 diameter bullet !!!

I don't know if it's going to be .30 Super Carry or .277 Fury that catch on as the next big things, but I'm glad people are attempting to innovate in the cartridge design space, achieving the pressures that can be pushed with modern metallurgy and CAD, as opposed to applying innovations in powder and projectile design to century old form factors. And a little PDW in .30 Super Carry would be the cat's pajamas. I'm no engineer but I imagine you'd have all kinds of pressure to operate a little piston like in an MPX, as well as pressure to make a compensator very effective. A CZ Skorpion form factor would be super cool too, but I'm afraid the cartridge would too much for simple blowback.

Usually the smaller caliber rifle cartridge weapons like that 20-25 rifle were sold for varmint hunting where your target is small and at a fairly long range away in fact the .223 Winchester is a varmint round originally before the military adopted it for its low recoil as the 5.56 mm M-16 cartridge. The low bullet weight offers the advantages of low recoil and the higher velocity gets the bullet to the target quicker allowing less bullet drop and time for the animal to react also like when you fire at a deer with a bow often times the deer ducks or jumps out of the flight path of the arrow high velocity projectiles don't allow this phenomena to occur.

I personally think the single event that would seal the .30 Super Carry’s fate as a success is if the P365 would be chambered in it. The ammo is currently at ~37 cents per round on Ammoseek, but I saw it get as low as ~30 cents per round last summer. The issue definitely isn’t production volumes. There just isn’t enough of a variety of subcompacts chambered in it. And maybe a general confusion on what the cartridge is supposed to be. A rule of thumb with the .30 Super Carry is that it generally requires a firearm’s action to be as strong as it’d need to be for 9x19. Sure, the cartridges themselves are narrower, but they produce basically the same amount of energy. It isn’t like a .380 or a .32, where you can get a noteworthy lighter gun. .30SC is always going to be an engineering cousin of 9mm.

Nighthawk makes a really nice .30 SC pistol and Ian from Forgotten Weapons goes over the history of this round in detail. It comes from a French round. I am also a fan of this round because of capacity. I get more rounds in the same size pistol. And this round is perfect for a pistol. Especially concealed carry.

Love the thought of hot rodding the 25. Budget is kinda a problem on 1100/month though. I am now salivating over the 30SC.

I've been thinking about a .25 magnum for pocket concealed carry for a while now! Would love to see you do it!

    Look up .25NAA . It's a .32acp case that's bottlenecked to accept a 25acp bullet. They make a 32naa also using a .380 casing

@@Swishersweetcigarilo Yeah, but that would take up the same space as any other 32 case cartridge, and you wouldn't get any capacity benefit.

That 1984 reference took me a sec... and I was like OH GOD. Nice collection of ammo. I think I saw a bimetal 7.62R under your 20mm. I had an idea with the 277 sig fury: cut the case to 45 auto length, chamfer the inside to be able to seat a bullet, preferably something light.... profit?

The longer brass isn't to increase propellant capacity. It's so that if you load it into a gun chambered for the similar diameter but less powerful round (for instance, a 10mm round in a .40 cal pistol), the gun won't go all the way into battery and thus won't fire. It's a technique that has been in practice since the early days of semi-auto pistols.

I've been kicking around a similar, but different, idea. Stick to a 380 ACP OAL, and build a steel magazine like shield arms for a Glock 42, try for 10 rounds in something that small. Could be a cool pocket rocket.
