30 Meters For Swimming? Patek Philippe Makes Major Changes

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

2024 Patek Philippe watches are the standard to which all other luxury watches are compared. From the classic Calatrava dress watch to the Nautilus sports watch, every Patek Philippe watch is class competitive and a point of reference ofr other watchmakers. For 2024 Patek Philippe watches, new warranty, water resistance, and accuracy standards apply; learn about all of them tonight with Tim Mosso.
Water resistance is one of the most controversial and discussed topics among watch collectors. 30 meters, 50 meters, 120 meters: what do they mean, and how do you know if a watch can be used for swimming? For 2024, Patek Philippe has re-rated nearly every single watch in the catalog to 30-meters. The formerly 120-meter rated 5811 Nautilus and 5167 Aquanaut now share a water resistance with pure dress watches like the Calatrava 5227. According to Patek Philippe, all of these watches are now rated for actual swimming, showering, and even submergence down to a true depth of 30 meters - almost 100 feet!
Finally, new standards associated with the Patek Philippe seal bring greater accuracy to the brand's watches. When it debuted in 2009, the Patek Philippe seal entailed guaranteed accuracy of -3/+2 seconds per 24 hours for movements with a diameter over 20mm. As of 2024, that timing tolerance improves to -1/+2 seconds per 24 hours. Significantly, this standard applies to fully assembled watches tested in six positions. In comparison, the well known COSC chronometer certification involves a five-position test of bare movements prior to casing as a complete watch.
All of this plus live discussion and watch collector wrist shots appears tonight on "Watches Tonight!"

The expression "you don't know what your missing until it is gone" applies to Tim! When Tim could not do the show last week, I felt something was missing from my Monday night! Great to see you tonight!

Tim! Another great show. Crazy to think that 30m water resistance actually means what it says - everything and every forum I've ever seen has argued otherwise! To your point, if Patek is making the claim, we know they've got strong confidence in that. Interesting updates from W&W that I wasn't aware of. I didn't see these details covered in all the initial KZread coverage of the event - thank you as always!

Great show Tim! For watches (Rolex, PP, VC, AP, and many others) that are meant to last many lifetimes, 2 year warranty seems almost silly. 5 is barely reasonable. With caveats like proof of yearly testing for water tight etc.

I really like Patek's statement on water resistance. It's always been an awkward experience for me to explain to people outside the watch hobby that, in the watch industry, 30M does not mean 30M, and 100M does not mean 100M. What Patek is doing here is - they're saying that, for them, 30M is 30M. And, moreover, I thibk they guarantee their sports watches to only 30M because they know full well that the percentage of their customers who will ever take one of their watches deeper than 30M is infinitesimally small. Regarding their timing guarantee update, I really like that as well. I think this is significant not because they narrowed the margin by 2 seconds/day, but because they're the first company, to my knowledge, that guarantees better performance on some of their mechanical watches than Rolex does on theirs. I think this move is a step forward for Patek to truly be the best in the Swiss watch industry in every way, and I appreciate their courage.

At 18:50 Tim suggests that watch manufacturers open up regional watch service centers. A fantastic idea, but there is an acute shortage of watch repairman worldwide! Given the industry pays well, the brands should partner with tech/trade schools to recruit people.

It hasn't stopped us from setting up a large shop for CPO Rolex. Where there's will, the means can be found. We trained our own through Rolex. So, a lack of personnel isn't a problem if you're willing to commit the resources. Simply searching and hiring could be less fruitful than what we did. Best, Tim

@@the1916companywatchreviews I had no idea 1916 was using its own personnel trained byRolex. I always thought that the CPO watches went back to Rolex in Switzerland. If you are allowed to show us, it would be a great video to take us on a tour of 1916's CPO operations.

22:00 The core problems of water resistance ratings are 1.) that while a given rating is technically true, functionally they are lies 99% of the time , and 2.) watch media talking about a given “x meters” disingenuously literally when every watch person knows that such a rating is rarely true, but then but then in the breath video saying that “x meters” is too little. Patek’s new standard is defined in same literal way Omega does it. This is unambiguously a positive development for customers.

Awesome Show Tim and crew. I think Patek going with a real water resistance rating rather than the standard one is a good move forward. I loved their jeans style straps as well.

What to make of 100 m water resistance on a non screw down crown watch? How much WR does the screw down feature contribute actually vs the rubber gaskets?

My guess is ppl with grand master chime may have Stern on their speed dial. I guess they don’t need to go through regular channel for service. Perhaps just a phone call away and it is all done.. The 2 year or 5 year warranty criteria is perhaps just for ‘regular’ watch.. But I also felt PP will not be too tie down on this warranty as they are know to be generous and courteous with after service (as least from what I can see here in Singapore).

Great show as always Tim. I would not want to be testing Patek on any of these claims as far as water resistance goes. If there is no change in the engineering, what's the reason for such a massive change in water resistance rating? I would suggest that Patek have been massively over-rating their water resistance for years. Seems like a huge own goal for no benefit if that's not the case.

  • @shuycg

So, do Pateks have to be water tested each year to be covered by warranty against water ingress? Even during the 5 years warranty?

I heard that the issue with showering is not the water but the soap because the oils/chemicals in soap could break down the gaskets over a period of time. Does anyone know more about this?

  • @localheroEd

    @localheroEd

Im not an expert but here’s my thoughts… All gaskets fail it’s just a matter of time, that’s why they’re a consumable. Also consider that gaskets are usually greased in some way and anything that cleans is usually a degreaser.

Brands offering a free service doesn’t seem likely given the revenue impact but they should extend the warranty for at least 2 years after a service

i know you are brilliant on watches, but not so accurate on Tesla. have you ever owned one? I have a model three and a model Y, and I can tell you that Tesla still does mobile service if the particular job allows it. when my model three was less than one year old, tesla provided a flatbed for free to obtain a tire repair. I don't know if they provide flat beds now. I also am not happy with 500 charger employees being fired. But Tim made insinuations that charging reliability has dropped. In my experience I have seen no decrease in the excellent quality of superchargers or read about reports of such. I wonder if all this is an anti-tesla or general anti-EV attitude?
