Folks, don't overlook thrift shops. I have found some of the nicest white porcelain pieces from little plates to little square divided dishes intended for putting dipping sauces in.

I bet if you rushed through everyone complaining about how slow it is would complain how fast it is! Myself, I enjoyed every minute of your video. The information was excellent. I’ve always been bothered by the way the water and paint act on plastic and switched to porcelain at home. Thank you 😊

I agreee, and, if someone wants a diferent speed, youtube allows us to make the video go faster and slower, there those options available for everyone, so those comments are stupid and boring, just respect someone's work, 'cause you're not paying for it, it's given to you FOR FREEE, so be grateful that you have the opportunity to learn something new or shut t f up

I enjoyed your video. Unlike some who felt you "dragged" it out, I thought it was perfect. You covered the various differences in materials, and how they effect the paint mixing process. Thank you.

This particular video was a huge factor in changing the way I approach watercolors. Not only do I now have a stack of ceramic and porcelain plates, bowls, ramekins, etc., but it has also allowed me to expand my mixing capabilities. Of course, I still use a metal palette, because they are great in storing my new favorite watercolor brand, Roman Szmal, but I’m using the ceramic/porcelain items for mixing. Can we give a hallelujah to Target, World Market, and random thrift stores for cheap palettes!!! I am impatient with the impatient people who were complaining about the slow start of the video. Now this is very important. Many of us started out without being taught some basic foundational information that would have really helped our art. Even if our art was only on a hobby level - like me - it could have made the whole journey so much easier. Seeing somebody as accomplished as you are having gone through the same frustrations is extremely helpful and makes me know that I am not alone. Don’t let the negative Nellies dissuade you from sharing these aspects of your journey. There are many, many more of us out there who appreciate and can relate.

I put it on 2x and actually checked to see if I had accidentally chosen a slower speed lol. That's just me being impatient and hoping and waiting for the nugget of info I might not know, for a beginner her style would be extremely helpful.

I dont know why people are complaining about "Dragging" I actually found this video super relaxing and informative!

i have a couple of deviled egg plates from Goodwill and they're perfect for watercolor mixing. I highly recommend looking for those.

I bet you could use that press and seal saran wrap to cover a ceramic pallet.

I must say she is right, porcelain / ceramic palettes are much better. I have the same palettes I had ar 18 at art school and I am now 61 :-D

A small science lesson from an artist/ chemistry teacher. Plastic pallets cause your water to bead because they are essentially made of oils (water and oil repel each other) porcelain and ceramic are normally mixes of compounds that are water soluble (will dissolve in water). Don’t worry, your pallet won’t disappear, it just allows the water to sit on its surface rather than trying to for better words “push it off” End of science lesson. I enjoyed your video and will be heading to world market tomorrow

Hey there Carrie! A helpful hint for the open ceramic pallets. I use a product called "press n seal" make by saran wrap ,it is a slight sticky reusable product that I've used for a few years Pull off a piece big enough and run your finger around the edges and the dividers of the wells, pull it off when you need the pallette and you can reuse the piece again ect... I hope your well and lots of love Heather ❤️

For a future video, could you perhaps just go through setting up your watercolour? I find that when I watch help videos, the things that they see as too basic to put in, I generally don’t know. So it would be great if you just (rrreealllyy in detail) set yourself up for painting! Love your channel! So helpful for blooming artists! ❤️

I watched this video months ago and I didn't take these tips to heart because I was a beginner and all my drawings were bad, but i figured out watercolors now, and i have to say i got frustrated now with my palette and water to paint ratio. Could you make a video tutorial about how to paint a clean and smooth large background without blotching and how to smooth the shadow lines with the background ( specially the skin). You might already have some tutorial about these but if you could just make more detailed one would be appreciated. Love💖 🙏

Found the best Porcelain Plate for mixing in target for 2.00. Target has an aisle with all white dinnerware on it. They have small bowls, big plates, dessert plates etc. I bought a dessert plate and immediately brought it home to try! I put a wet mix of paint on it, nooooooooo bubbles or separation of any kind! It was amazing! It was one smooth coat!

Hi try cleaning you plastic patelle with toothpaste when you first get it, the toothpaste clears off whatever residue that the plastic pallet has been coated with and keeps watercolor for makes a pool. I found that when given it a good scrub with the toothpaste it does wonders and it does work for me. Also try cleaning it with the mr. Clean Magic Eraser that works too. Edwina..

That flamingo is gorgeous every time i try to draw or paint one i end up with a flaming-no 😂

Beautifully done video. I love the clean, orderly, yet simplistic feel of the way the video progresses. I am also amazed that this is the first I've heard of a comparative study of the way the water to paint ratio mixes and pools in different ways in different palettes. I can't wait to try white ceramic now. I couldn't put my finger on it about plastic and its beading quality until seeing this tip. The whole video was a work of art in progress. Thank you!

I recently got one of the flower shaped porcelain pallets on Amazon for less than $9 and I am loving it! It's so much better than my plastic one.

I use cheap white ceramic saucers and plates for mixing too. :) And I use various old tins (altoids, vintage meds cases, or metal cases with coloured pencils that I don't use) as a storage for paints, combo of those two work great. :)

I am really interested in limited watercolour palettes. Seeing unusual colour combinations and seeing how far you can push them when creating an artwork. Not sure if you would be interested as well but thought I'd let you know regardless :)

I was interested in this video and I truly appreciate what has worked for you to improve your watercolor paintings. The ceramics in the World Market store is one that I have passed several times but never even thought of seeing these. Guess who is going there to see their ceramics? Lol! I found plates at world market for next to nothing at a pre-Thanksgiving sale. Nice, white, and square. What a change from plastic! For a square dinner plate and a square salad plate I paid about five, maybe six dollars for the both.

Thank you so much for making this video! I'm new to art in general, so I don't have a ton of experience. I knew I wasn't using enough water but couldn't seem to get my head around it. After your video I went and dug out some divided ceramic plates I had stored because they were too heavy and bulky for every day use. The difference is night and day. I could tell immediately that I had not used enough water AGAIN, but this time I saw it on the palette, before I tested it on paper. Once I saw that it was actually working, I went back to retry the blending and wet on wet technique exercises that I had so miserably failed at. Now, everything is working like it should! You've made watercolors accessible to me. I really was ready to give up and watching supply videos was my last ditch effort to see if changing my tools would help. I wasn't expecting an answer, but you gave it to me!

I found the greatest "Corelle" white porcelain round divided plate at an estate sale the other day. I use Corelle for my everyday plates but have never seen this particular style before.

Press and Seal is one of my best friends in my studio. I cover my porcelain palettes (mostly TJ Maxx, Dollar Tree, Walmart white plates and platters/trays) with it and because mine have edges/lips I press it to the edge and it covers the whole thing without touching the paint. Also, if it’s pressed taught it will be strong enough to not cave in if you put another palette on top, just as long as it is not too heavy.

First off, the initial few minutes had a lot of great info for a beginner like me. Understanding the thought process behind the choices you are making is invaluable! What I really want to know, is what are you doing near the end when painting a big background to keep the blue off of the fox even though you painted right overtop of it??? That seems like an incredibly useful technique! Bless you for the amazing work, last night I learned a lifetime's worth of information about paper in less than an hour!

I just ordered a beautiful porcelain palette off amazon. I’m currently painting with a plastic palette & it keeps doing that weird & annoying separating thing. I have to mix it with the brush every time I want to pick up some color. Such a waste of time. Thanks for this useful advice!

Totally agree on the porcelain/ceramic palettes! My plastic ones very easily got stained so in the end it was hard to see what color I had mixed on them, the porcelain ones obviously didn't stain but also kept the colors wet for longer. It's not really much of a difference in cost either, my current porcelain mixing palette cost like $10 and the plastic ones were only a couple of dollars cheaper. (I have two of the flower-shaped ones like in your vid).

So the metal palette you now use is different from the one you called your favorite back in April?

When you were talking about the various palettes, I got some ideas! Okay, if you have clear glass or plastic palettes, try putting a piece of white paper under them. Or, you could put another sheet of the exact same paper under the palette so that you can see how the paper and the colors look together! It's still good to have a test sheet with you, but for a quick reference, it might help! It will also be good in case your paper isn't white. Like with gray or tan paper. And that way you can easily change out the colors. Just a few ideas that might work!

You can get cheap porcelain dishes at Ross, tjmaxx and Marshall's too. To cover circular plates, you can use flexible lids which can be purchased from Amazon. They're meant for Tupperware containers.

Why so many nit picky complaints? This artist is giving you a high quality video on how to paint for free.

hospitality supplies have square soy sauce dishes that stack easily when you are not using them. KMart have any sort of plates that are ceramic and white. Also check out salvation army stores and the like.

You skipped 'brush'. You really need a good brush. But yes, finding something new that completely changes your work is one of those tiny revelation moments that I live for. I've been painting since before I could walk, over 30 years now creating with paint has been my way of expression. And STILL I find new things that just make my whole day :D I come from a small town with just one real art shop and it hadn't hit me until a few weeks back I could actually make my own paint. Luckily it's too costly for me to start doing that already, or by now my house would look like an Indian paint festival by now. But these moments are the second best part about being a creator.

I've used Kolinsky sables from day one, as a Pro - I've used the same old Prang brush to mix my paints. I've oft found myself painting with that darn thing, when I don't need small points. But I've painted full paintings with it, just to prove it's the talent, paint and paper over the brush any day.

Got some fondue plates from goodwill that make excellent palettes

Thank you so much, I'm using a butcher tray... emaille white. I will look into a metal palette, for my watercolor. And the toothpaste trick is very helpful.

I'm a big ol' fan of porcelain deviled egg platters. Found a 13in plate with 26 "wells" for $25 and it was such a good life choice. The middle is a little spot for sauces that can be used for mixing. The first circle is 8 'wells' and I like putting my primaries there. This video actually ended up leading me to the egg plate so I'm super thankful. The toothpaste trick is SO helpful too. It helped me like my Qor and Schmincke palettes a bit more. I'm glad this popped up in my suggested again, I'm a big noob and there's a ton of good info packed into this vid.

If you have a Home Goods near you can always find really inexpensive large white porcelain/ceramic plates. You can also check out Walmart or thrift stores.

I have no problems using "plastic" palettes. Rubbing a little Dawn detergent with cloth and a quick rinse will stop beading without scratching the plastic. Large enough mixing areas seem to be more important in making the "right water ratio" than the palette material.

I found Max Kress rectangle palette perfect. I have 3, one for CDA neocolor II, one is for watercolour and the third is for inktense pencils.

My new palette is a porcelain plate I got from Ikea for $5 😛 it's square shaped with a raised edge and it's pretty great! Also I use a small ceramic ramekin that came with a cheese board we were given.

I love to use Deviled Egg Ceramic Palettes on sale for mixing! I've been using the same metallic portable palette for 30 years when I travel, didn't really think about why. BINGO!

What is a good brush to use?

Hm. I love my plastic Mijello palette, but because I haven't had the experience you have, I won't worry about it too much for now. I mostly sketch when I'm on the go, and the fact that it's lightweight and self contained has been very effective for that purpose. If I ever switch to porcelain and come to this conclusion, I'll think of your video.

I don't really paint, I play and dabble, but I can't draw, so I just play with color. I came and watched your video because I saw your Insta-Story and wanted to make your day as you have mine so many times with your videos. As a person who can only paint on my lap would love to use ceramic but just to heavy to balance! Found (at a thrift store) a thicker plastic pallet w deep wells & works fine & times even use coated paper plates! Also get mini Tupperware containers if need larger amount & know paint/water ratio as use a pipette.

If you already have a plastic or metal palette and dont have the money for a better porcelain palette, what you can do is take a very fine sandpaper, nail file (those for manicure) or those sponges with a green top, and rub the surface of your palette a little bit. Just a little bit.

Beautifully presented and explained video Carrie. I just love your style and how you always manage to find budget friendly products. I, too, love and only use ceramic, such a game changer as you explained. I have a square palette 7” eight well palette I got from Amazon Prime for $12.99 (as of today, 12/17/2021) that I use with my flower palette you showed. The wells are a bit smaller, so it’s a great companion to the flower one. It’s also easy to just cover with plastic wrap if I’m still working on a project as I have dogs and fur is always in the air, gets in my my water, etc. Just wanted to share. Thanks Carrie and many blessings.

After painting for over 35 years My 3 are .....Watercolor Paints....Watercolor Paper....Watercolor Brushes. Best way, spend more! If your a beginner or pro.

for me.. it is the watercolors and the brushes.. it is important to understand they types of watercolors and your need before buying anything.. it will save alot of money.. I bought QoR first and I wondered why I cannot control it.. then I new it is because of the binder that makes it spread alot..

An escargot baking dish works great, too. I got that tip from a comic book artist that used it for inks.

To get plastic palettes to pool the water a good trick is to use a glue stick on the surface. I was planning to buy porcelain palettes until I found out about that trick and now it's not a priority anymore. And for some reason none of the stores here have white porcelain dishes with a raised edge. I have been to just about every home decoration store in town and no luck! 😩

Please in future can you list the items you use and where you get them from. I was especially interested in your metal palette, however, I’m from the UK, and can’t seem to find this here. Good idea about ceramic shops and thrift shops.
