This is probably a stupid question but I'm going to ask anyway....how can you tell if the specific paint tube or color you are picking out is say a warm green or a cool red?

That is not a dumb question! That's a GREAT question! Some brands will say next to the color (red shade = which means warm and green shade = cool) . My winsor blue is a cool blue since it says (green shade). However, other paints don't tell you whether the color is cool or warm - you just have to figure it out by trial and error. My rule is - look at the color wheel. If the color is closer to greens and blues - it's a cool shade. Such as lemon yellow - although yellow is considered a warm color - lemon yellow is considered a cool version of yellow. Since it's located very close to green in comparison to other yellows. However, cadmium yellow or even indian yellow - is considered a warm yellow since it's closer to red on the color wheel. This is why I love to organize my paints in a color wheel - because it HELPS SO MUCH with mixing! :D I hope that helps. That was a lot of info and hopefully makes sense. :)

Your videos are so calming, they're borderline ASMR territory.

I agree with you about having bright colours to start with and then toning them down if you want/need to.

LoveArts oh boy, I sure agree! I’ve not watched some, or have turned down their speed talking! She has a beautiful voice, relaxing so we can concentrate. I’m usually not a fan of music on these, but I like yours, I barely noticed it as it’s enhancing. If you want another job, you’d be good at narrating audible books! They sure need better narrators. Thanks so much.

I found this super enlightening. It's amazing how wildly one artist's palette choices can differ from another, especially in watercolor since there's so much variation in paints. Yours comes out so cheerful, fresh, and lively!

Scarlet lake is also my ultimate fav red! Your pallet is so thoughtfully put together, I also use a lot of these same colours and I understand why you stand by them. Its also good to see another artist who uses white in watercolour. When I was starting I got a lot of flack from teachers saying a real watercolour artist never has white in their pallet but I’ve found that there are colours that you get by mixing white that are a completely different feel than just diluting your wash. I also love how calming your videos are, your cinematography and compositing is brilliantly done.

Thank you for making watercolor so accessible. I love the colors and effects achieved with watercolor. I had an opportunity handed to me with two community scholarships, and spent it all on materials and supplies. On my own, I could not have spent so much money! You are helping so much. I wanted to offer this: I cut out sample swatches from the different companies you mention, and one or two more. This “dates” me a bit, because I haven’t seen that offered for years. ..but you make your own. I would rearrange the colors in different light, including morning light and afternoon light. I had colors I loved near each other. ..then, I paint. My favorite paintings and photos are “postcard” size. ..not actually postcards. I use rosette composition, for the most part, to make the edges of the paper disappear. I like landscapes for contour. I like gardens for the same reason. I wrote this, not for myself. I love illustration, and if I could do it as beautifully as you I would illustrate cookbooks or children’s books. ..just some thoughts. ..love your work.

Great video Carrie! I love your calm delivery, very easy to follow and as others have commented, top rate video. Your videos are always well produced and easily understandable. Keep them coming! I know you don’t usually do this type, but would love to see a landscape at sunset or beach scene at sunset or anytime of the day. I am struggling on water reflection.

I LOVE your bright color choices. I'm running low on the more traditional palette I was guilted into buying when I started and I NEEEEEED to replace them with bright, vibrant colors! I think the reason I took a big hiatus with painting was the boring colors! I'm not even going to stick with specific "professional" brands or lightfast colors anymore because I take a picture of it anyway. I don't need the colors to last after that nor do I need to stress about pigments.

I would love a watercolor coloring book full of your illustrations. They are so happy and peaceful :)

It's a metal palette from amazon called Color-Around-Aluminum-Watercolor-Palette. It's really inexpensive and I personally like how deep the wells are for your paints. :)

hi just a question, do you use the white gouache to mix with other colours and make them more pastel?

What is the process for filling out your color wheel? Your videos are so beautiful!

Fun to watch! I have a lot of brands and have never run into a granulating phthalo blue and I have several. Ultramarine pigments (PB29) usually granulate and they are redder than most Phthalo's. But Phthalo's do not granulate. The reddest phthalo blue (no granulation) is Winser Blue RS by Winser & Newton. It has more violet in it than Schmincke's Sapphire blue. If you are looking for a blue with more red in it check it out. Its beautiful! I love Scarlet Lake too, but what brand is yours? I have W&N Scarlet Lake and its not a mid red at all but a true scarlet hue, which is between orange and red. I don't use it for a primary. But to beautiful not to have it on my palette. Thanks for sharing.

This was very helpful. I just got the Mijello Gold Class Mission 36 set. Only 2 Brown's in there. I will have to learn how to mix for different shades. Any advice would be very much appreciated! Off the topic of paint for a moment but, I have a mug thats similar to yours! Its my favorite, but instead of bunnies (i think?) mine is watermelon slices.

@@WaterColorMisfit you're doing a disservice by not mentioning the lightfast issue to your viewers, especially since you are aware this is a non lightfast paint, you know you have an impact over people choices and not everyone knows opera rose will fade

What I’m curious about is using your tube paints to mix your own colors in the pan? Is this a bad idea? A good idea? Is it just better to stick with mixing colors on the palette? I’m going to be creating my own palette soon and I kind of want to use my colors to make new colors!

Hmm, I thought I remember art teachers saying any pigment with the word "lake" in it is NOT light fast.. please correct me if I'm wrong. Make sure to always check color info sheets provided by brands. Scarlet Lake from Winsor has || (2 lines) by the ASTM ratings system. This means it has good lightfastness. One step below excellent lightfastness. Watercolor Misfit 50 yrs sounds like lots to you young folks, but I am 69 and if I were lucky enough to inherit some paintings from a family member, my mom for instance, I would be so dismayed to see the colors change significantly. For practice or for producing work to be scanned, the lakes and opera(which is listed as fugitive) are fine, but not for paintings you hope to have some lasting value, even if only sentimental. We are so lucky these days in having a huge selection of pigments with excellent lightfastness ratings to chose from. As an artist who is teaching you would do your followers a great service in addressing lessons and pigment recommendations to the importance of lightfastness. Love your work, thanks for sharing.

SCHMINCKE : HORADAM BRILLIANT OPERA ROSE is a funky, useful mixing colour but sadly often considered a fugitive pigment. Curious if you've tried verzino violet made by MaimeriBlu? It seems to hold up a lot better - same pigment PR122 but possibly missing something. Having never used Opera myself I'm wondering how it compares? Great content and production. Well done.

What paper should zi use for my watercolor painting?

I can't find Schmincke Cobalt Turquoise Blue or Winsor Newton Payne's Gray. Help!

Do you like to make a video on "pan vs tube". TO make palette, you can either do directly from pan (no processing needed) or squeeze from tubes and let them dry up.....

What if the purple red and all the colors making mud is a sample of how the blackhole works?

Your color swatches are an art in themselves! ☺️ there's not much difference in the sky blue and the cerulean, is one more opaque or something?

brandiveh yes! Horizon blue is very opaque and not good for glazing. But it is awesome for sky backgrounds😄

Hi, I have a quick question. Have you ever tried MGram watercolors? I love them, there are a wonderful profesional brand, full of vibrant colours. As watching this video I'm Creating a painting with them. I love your videos, and I think you'd love them as Maybe a third go to (after Ph Martens). I really recommend them.

modern primaries are called like that not bc printshop use them but bc they're based on pigments created in the 20th century. I can't remember exactly but phtalo pigments were created around 1930 and quinacridones around 1950

Interesting. I too have cobalt teal(Lukas) and opera rose(Schminke) as alternative primaries, in one set I have though they are a third primary choice, but fascinated that you have also include the Cotman Mauve which does not come in their smaller sets, I had to find it for myself, and love it. There is also a lovely Cotman blue green though it is very staining. In general I really dislike most of the rest in that brand but those two pack a punch. I guess I have a little quirk in that I love what many hate, chrome oxide green which will produce when used very sparingly with zinc white some really lovely pale jade type colours. Have you experimented with using very small amounts of zinc white with equally small amounts of non-granulating earth tones? Its a revelation about why a good zinc white is useful, mine is from Kremer and sort of slightly translucent, which keeps the watercolour feel if you want pastels that are not opaque and don't really want or need to exploit the paper white. Also great for painting on tinted paper. Loved this video, not least because I was wanting inspiration on creating. a really vivid green that I can see nowhere as a readymade watercolour. And suddenly at a random click your video was there! Your illustration was lovely too and so immaculate!

Im rediscovering watercolor after about 20 years, and found a Cotman Mauve in my collection. The color is indeed amazing! So many other Artusts look down on the student grade paints, but there are some gems! Why spend $10, when you can get a decent color for $4. (BTW, my 25 year old Cotman tubes were priced $1.68 LOL)

Vickie Rayhill, I read that with just a couple of exceptions the Lukas student set is no different to the far pricier professional artists set. It is a matter to looking for the pigment you want and knowing what brands do the job.

Please explain what white watercolor is used for. It comes on every set but nobody talks about it. I see everybody using white gouache.

I prefer white gouache over white watercolor. Gouache is much thicker of a paint than watercolor and in my opinion creates a better mixture when desiring lighter yet pop pastel colors - such as shell pink (which I can make with scarlet lake and white gouache) :)

Bianyo is not professional ..I guess it's student grade

not a fan of your green selections, I prefer sap green (warm) and viridian (very cool) and permanent green (bright) these greens will do almost any foliage add a bit of raw sienna or umber and you have shades of olive.

How to avoid the watercolours from cracking out when they started to dry

Gum Arabic - it's a watercolor medium that helps glue the watercolor back together after it has dried out. Just wet you color and them add some of this stuff inside 💛😊

It is - but traditional watercolorist would never use white. :) I'm definitely not traditional - I love gouache, ink, gold foil, even recently been experimenting with felt and other crafting supplies :D

helpful vudeo, thanks. one question: why would you put a fugitive pigment in your palette, specifically opera? I know that folks who plan on scanning their work as integral in creating their finished product have no issue using fugitive paints, which pretty much includes all the paints using fluorescent pigments and the lovely original alizarin crimson for instance. The rest of us who plan on using the actual painting should be aware that if we use this color we risk the color changing, even when displayed behind uv glass and if the painting was to be gifted or sold that would be a problem. This issue has been discussed on blogs with some folks noting they have no problems, but facts are facts and opera flunks lightfastness tests. To avoid opera, would you suggest one like Quinacridone Rose for instance, a vibrant red that has dependable lighfastness?
