3 Steps to Stop Negative Thinking

We all have negative thoughts, so we all need to get used to it.
If you happen to be human, sentient, conscious and have a sense of self, then congratulations, you probably suffer from negative thinking like the rest of us.
The problem is that we spend so much time trying not to have negative thoughts, we end up causing more negative thoughts about having negative thoughts, and that spiral of anxiety is no fun for anyone.
In this video I talk about not just how to deal with negative thoughts (in three steps), but how they can actually be fucking useful, too.
Intro: 00:00
Step 1: Accept that failure is a natural part of life 00:49
Step 2: Practice self-forgiveness 3:16
Step 3: Don’t judge your negative thoughts with more negative thoughts 7:25

I would like to add that: we also think we are more important than we are. We tend to act like we are on a reality show and the whole world is paying to our every move. We aren’t. Yes people will laugh and judge and take conclusions, but at the end of the day they spend to much time thinking about themselves to and don’t have brain space for you

The reason I enjoy listening/reading Mark is because his style is “real” to me. He doesn’t attempt to boost his own ego by coming off and formal, complex, superior. Sometimes it just takes a “we’re all morons sometimes” to quit over analyzing and shaming yourself. Love it. Keep the vids coming Mark

I mean, he just says „fuck“ often. Is that what you call „real“? His content isn‘t anything new, any psychologist can tell you the same things. Cool if his stuff helps you, but he isn‘t a genius and using swear words doesn‘t make him more human than people with education in psychology and similar fields. You americans are just so brainwashed into beeping every swear word, that you get all excited when you hear fuck, nigger, cock and all these „mean“ terms that the rest of the world treat as normal words which just make us yawn. I mean, good for Mark for developing this brand. He‘s lucky he‘s american. In other countries this approach wouldn‘t be special enough.

There's an attention dilemma: We always stress about what other people think of us, but each person thinks the same; they all think about themselves. Lesson: No one cares about you more than yourself. Let it go, and you will feel as free as you can possibly feel.

Saurabh, Practicals are needed to heal yourself from negative thoughts. Your breath is directly related to your mind [brain] causing negative thoughts-anxiety For a relaxed life sit on a chair, back erect, hands on lap with palms upwards, eyes closed, be still and observe your natural incoming--outgoing breath at the entrance of the nostrils for around 10-15 minutes or more. Let thoughts come. Slowly negative thoughts will reduce and relax the mind. Whenever you are free in the day or night sit still for 2 to 5 minutes and observe your breath. Being still reduces negative thoughts. Make it a habit. Do the above meditation daily to have a better life. Best wishes and prayers. Shyaaam Sir. -Counsellor.

    1. Failure is a made up standard in our heads 2. Self forgiveness - separate action from intention and empathize with it, then draw a lesson from it. 3. I was having an existential crisis in a target cuz I was being a baby about some dumbass not wanting to date me, found your book, and have never felt such peace in my life. The things you said aren’t things I haven’t heard thousands of times before, but the way you said them just resonated with me in a way that was undeniable. In the marine corps we have a saying called “breaking it down Barney style” which basically means explaining something by breaking it down to its simplest, sometimes most condescending, f-bomb ridden form, so that even the most dense of marines can understand it. You broke down life Barney style, and for that I thank you.

I grew up with a perfectionist parent, who passed that onto me. I only learned in my 40s when I started to lead a team, that I didn't expect them to be perfect and showed them kindness, but would not do the same for myself. I pissed away my adult years being super hard on myself - and now, I am just moderately hard on myself. Love this video Mark!

It's great that you've identified the trigger/ environment that causes your negative thoughts. Now, you can do something to change those things and take control of your thoughts anytime you're in a situation or space that you know causes you to think negatively. Negative thoughts cannot take over your mind unless you dwell in it. Catch yourself thinking negative next time and tell yourself to snap out of it. Go do something healthy immediately to distract yourself. Be prepared.

Just caught a few of your videos Mark. Absolutely bang on 👍 really useful and practical advice. Final points on how our cultural emphasis on positive thinking/mindset backfiring feels very true to me. Thank you for sharing your wisdom.

A negative thought I’ve been dealing with was the failure to be accepted into Dental School. This video helped me realize what I need to do to get in this time, and also helped me realize that if I don’t get in a second time, it isn’t a failure and there are more options out there. All you can do when you have a goal is think smart and try your best. Even if you don’t try your best, at least you tried.

ive gotten better with this overtime since getting a job at a restaurant. i’ve embarrassed myself plenty of times, ran the wrong food out or too early, and have been a part of a lot of inconveniences. at the end of the day i just know i won’t remember these guests by tomorrow, i did what i could and whats done is done, some lessons were learned and the next time i can run things more efficiently.
