Makin' Magic is special. Putting It Straight not only had great trax but maybe the best album cover a guitar player could want.

Pat Travers and Pat Thrall were a killer duo too. I was lucky enough to see them as a kid at a Day on the Green.

I saw Pat Travers IN Orlando Fla. They filled in for the Ozzy Osbourne Slot Because Randy Rhodes died the day before the show. Killer show! But sad at the same time. On the way to the show I saw the damaged tour bus pass by heading north. You could clearly see where the plane had hit it.

I saw PT Band Open for AC/DC on Highway to Hell Tour '78...Fan Ever Since, Saw Him at a Club Down the Street Every Year in the 80's...Best Shows...

I still listen to "Putting it Straight". Love that album.

That was a heck of a band with Travers and Pat Thrall in it. They were ahead of their time. Heat in the Street, Putting It Straight, and Live Go for What you Know.

Pat Travers was a great example of live music from the late 70’s, early 80’s ... back when live recordings were an integral part of a bands discography ... Go for What You Know will always be a staple of live recordings

I saw Pat Travers on a Monsters of Rock Cruise 2019 Pat literally blew everybody else out of the water. So nice to see the respect he got from all the younger cats like Nuno❤🙏

I had the pleasure of seeing Pat Travers play live just last night in a small little venue probably less than a hundred people here in Lakeland Florida. It was my first time seeing him live probably one of the best guitar shows I've ever seen

Seeing Pat Travers play Makin' Magic on The Old Grey Whistle Test in 1976 was a life changing moment for me. Putting It Straight was an absolute masterclass in tight, punchy hard rock. An amazing album. He truly is one the the greatest players of all time.

Thanks for doing your lesson. I was a teen for most of the 70's and the first song I heard from him was Hooked on Music in '77. I was Hooked on Pat Travers ever since. I saw him open up for Rush in '78 and he almost stole the show. I realized when the live album came out in '79 that it was the same set. I've seen him probably more times than any other band and he still kicks ass!!! I even met him after a show in SE Portland close to where I grew up and he was very down to earth and respectful.

Pat is the man. Saw him live in a small room in 07- blew me away. Blues rock guitarists are a dime a dozen but pat moves me deeply. He’s a badass, who perfectly melds blues, fusion, jazz and funk seamlessly. Ironically enough, years later, I’ve befriended his brother Stevie- he says I play very much like the late great Mars Cowling

I’m not really a blues rock guy and Pat Travers sticks out like a sore thumb in my record collection but he was probably my first guitar hero in the late ‘70’s early ‘80’s. One of those rare talents who managed to mix technique with soul and played with such an abandonment, he owns his guitar in the same way that people like EVH did. He’s also a great singer and a killer song writer. Have to wonder why he’s not better known?

Arguably the definitive version of this is from the live record "Go for What You Know" with Pat Thrall providing genius harmony and chord play on it.

Living in South florida I was blessed seeing Travers on many occasions. Even got to meet him a couple times. Always a killer show. A rock legend!

The Pat Travers live version of Born Under A Bad Sign is one of the all time greatest covers. Hundreds of me too covers of this song, his is truly unique. True to the feel of the original, but very different in execution. Stay well!

Go for what you know is my favorite album period. Never heard anything that combined the more brainy aspects of prog without losing sight of the shoot-from-the hip 70’s rock style so well.

Have always loved Pat Travers!!! Pretty much wore out this album and the Live one from that time frame. He's an amazing musician that flew under the radar a bit.

Making Magic was my first rock record ... just love!! Pat is great!!! Great vid as always ...

First heard about Pat Travers as a kid when my sister came home from an Orlando, FL show he played when filling in for Ozzy just after Randy died. She brought me an Ozzy shirt and was crying, but she said Pat Travers was great. Sad, but true.

I'll tell you what "Go for What You Know" is a perfect live album if you ask me. I can't even point to any one song as being the best.

Go For What You Know, by PT is a top 10 live album of all time. So GREAT.

Pat Travers is my biggest influence and I know you got a lot of people that play a million miles an hour but for me Pat Travers is my main guy always soulful always played what was right for the song great guitarist and thank God he's still out there today so there's anybody out there that hasn't checked them out especially the live go for what you know album or any of his previous albums dating back to the first one on polydore records we can check them out he's a monster and underrated! By the way I forgot to mention that he was playing at BB King's in New York and I took my son to go see him and I said this is a real player and my son was 15 at the time and thought he was just outrageous and we went backstage and met him that he was very nice with with my son and he also appreciated that I knew all of his stuff dating back to the first album and I do have all of them!

Damn this voice activated texting I meant to say Polydor records. Also a fantastic rhythm player which does doesn't get a lot of attention but he is one of the finest rhythm players out there! 🎸 And to think he took off on his own when he was just 20 years old! Barely out of diapers 😆

Been a fan of Pat since Makin Magic,and have a few of his LPs ,always thought that he deserved more praise and so glad to see Paul Gilbert playing his songs ,saw him in the U.K. in 78 when the Putting it straight LP was out Mars Cowling was a great Bass player too,sadly gone now ,thanks for covering his tune here ,about time someone did.

Pat Thrall with Pat Travers was a super group before super groups.

I saw him in 1980 and again in 2010. The guy can play and he has great licks we all tried to replicated. Him and Pat Thrall would trade some great leads back & forth. Yes, I would like to see some more Travers licks on KZread.

VAN HALEN was on the same concert bill with Pat back in the 70's.If I'm not mistaken Eddie was intrigued and influenced by his playing. Like u said Pat's influence in the 70's definitely rubbed off on guitar players of that era. Definitely underrated.The last time I saw him perform was during The Fidelis tour at B.B.KINGS IN N.Y.C. Been a fan of Pat Travers since the 70s remember seeing him at a little hole in the wall bar in Glenville N.Y.. Also love to see you playing the PRS they are great instruments I have 3 and love them all. If they are good enough for Pat Travers they are good enough for anyone.

The live from Pittsburgh CD (the Stanley Theatre) is on constant rotation in my car. Awesome tones and huge sound for a 3 piece. New Age Music has some great flanger tones.

I saw him last year and he was still an awesome player. After the show, which was a smaller venue he was gracious enough to talk to my wife and I and took a few pics. If you ever get the chance, go see him!

I’ve been a fan of Pat a long time. His version of Statesboro Blues is unreal. I crank it up on a regular basis. I think Brian Robertson of Thin Lizzy is on that song as well playing dueling solos.

I've always loved PT's playing. He is a monster player! His version of the song "Evil" is a blues tutorial with some killer licks. He's got a deep catalog with many gems. I saw him with Rick Derringer opening, and they were both phenomenal! P.S...Brewster, your vibrato is excellent!

Any PT analysis is always welcome, not nearly enough available on youtube.

Pat was and is a monster guitar player.. definitely influenced me big time especially his expressive rythm

I was at my favorite guitar shop yesterday and I see this familiar looking guy come in. I'm thinking who is that, I know him. It can't be Pat Traverse... WTF? Yeah, he was playing in town and he forgot to pack his pedalboard. He bought a cry baby ... I didn't want to bother him. I'd seen him back in 82 or 83 when Mars was still his bass player. I'd seen him in 80 or 81 when Tommy Aldridge was still with him. He was way ahead of his time and he's underappreciated. I resisted the urge to tell him how much I admired his playing.

Pat is great - had an amazing live band. Another good band from that era that would be fun to see you handle is Zebra. Their first album is classic and Randy Jackson is a wonderful guitar player.

Saw him in the late 70's opening for Rush and I can vividly recall 2000 people yelling "Out Go the Lights!". Tasty licks.

Making Magic album is killer. Had Brian Robertson from Thin Lizzy on Satesborough Blues and a Glenn Hughes on Stevie

Pat Thrall was a good second guitarist another SF guitarist that is underrated. Pat Thrall was in a lot of bands one called Automatic Man with Michael Shrieve. That Live Pat Travers album with Pat Thrall is so good when you have a good stereo system because two guitarists doing two different things going on. You have overlooked at the extension chord Pat Travers uses when he uses the flanger/chorus pedal, he will use 6ths,9ths,11ths,13th some weird chords at sections of his songs. Roger Fisher is another Canadian guitarist that is underrated check out his tunings In heart songs some weird guitar tunings he used and the intro to Magic Man that is a backwards tape guitar which sounds really good being backwards tape. Roger Fisher has solo albums to check out for some licks lesson.

I had a lead guitar instructional book written by Pat Thrall about 30 years ago. “Improvising rock guitar volume one” Was the name of the book. I found a picture but I’m too stupid to know how to put it on here

@@superchicken5000 I know how that can be, I had a house fire in 92 and lost so much stuff; plus my band was rehearsing there and we all lost equipment, mostly the keys and recording stuff ruined by the water damage. I am thankful for what I do have though.

Pat used to come to a small club in the town 5 minutes from me once a year . Saw him 3 times before the club went bust . Great guy ! Would walk around the club after his set and talk and sign autographs . He's a very close second favorite picker in my book , second to only Joe Walsh . You just did a review of Joe recently . How lucky am I ?? !! HAHAHA !! Thank You !!

Seeing the live shots of licks 1 and 2 is like seeing a couple of shredders on Valium.

What got my attention was the red Melody Maker. I had one like that but with only one pickup originally. It had a humbucker in the neck position and I modded it with a 3 way switch and new pick guard.

Love it.

I love Pat Travers! FUN FACT: On the live album "GO for what you know" the song boom boom out go the lights.On the first boom boom you can hear a distinct voice in the crowd it was my friend Andy Williams.

I keep a couple of Travers tunes in the band set list and they always go over well. He re-imagined some classic rock tunes in a very cool way. There are a boatload of albums he's recorded. I have people come up and ask who is the artist. I'll tell you one song that has eluded me for some parts is Crash and Burn. Originally featured a bit of keys, but I see now it's all guitar. Couple of chord voicings I can't quite put my fingers on.

That's a really nice PRS guitar you have there, David... but, there's just something about it... I can't quite put my finger on it... ummm... uh... ; )

When I first heard Pat Travers my jaw was on the floor such great feel attack in a great melding of blues and rock man Canadians for some reason can do that shit! I really wish you would feature another video but stay away from the slow stuff and show some of the more aggressive licks maybe stuff from rock ‘n’ roll Susie, speakeasy, Life in London etc.

Travers was a big influence on Paul Gilbert. You can hear a lot of Pat's ideas in Paul's tone, phrasing and even his use of the chorus pedal. How about a chords of Max Webster?
